I like this kid, I think he is going to be a stud but from what I have read and seen of him he comes off as a USC lock to me......he just has that odd USC swagger thing going on that I cant really explain. He just doesn't come off as a player who ever would take a ND offer seriously

I got the same feeling. He's not coming. The board can rip me apart if I'm wrong.

We'll see what he does. We'll know in early January. If he schedules a visit for that second weekend in January, we'll know we've got a shot, even if it's slim. If not, we'll know we are out of luck.

I've said that for quite some time. I follow USC recruiting closely, and I said it before he verballed to USC, and when he started talking to ND again, I still felt the same way. Being 12-0 put our toes in the door with him, and I'm shocked/ecstatic that he's visiting us, but IMO he's much closer to committing to UCLA than ND (and that's a big IF he decommits from USC). He's a manchild that would be amazing for our defense, but unfortunately I just don't see it happening. Would be awesome to be wrong (again)...

I agree with you, totally. But I don't know if I agree with the other posters that think he has the "USC Swagger." I am thinking he is more his own man than a lockstep kind of guy. What do you think?

Our coaches are doing what they can. They showed him some late love and possibly garnered a visit from him. Maybe he will show up and maybe not.

I wonder if he chooses UCLA over USC if he stays west coast.

They shouldnt rip you because it's fairly obvious we are a long shot at best and I would be very surpised if he even really ends up visiting even though the staff worked their tail off trying

Obviously I dont want this kid at USC for the reasons you've all pointed out. However, Eddie is an interior lineman and Montelus is projected for guard or center. That would be a fun battle to watch.

Hate to drum up false hope, but there's a post on II where a podcast from the UDub Scout site had ND with the inside track for Eddie V. This was the Washington homers reporting it, but hey, thought it was worth mentioning. Guess they talk about him at the 44:00 mark.

I see him as a dude that beats to his own drum. That USC 'Swagger' looks like a cat walk under Kiffy, so I don't know what that's even about anymore.

As for the 3-4 and Eddie, I mentioned that a month ago on here but I think it got lost in the wind. He sees himself in a 4-3. Thing is though, UCLA is running a 3-4 (he is looking at them closely), and so is ND, and so is Bama, and so are many NFL teams. And ND you can be sure is selling Tuitt's 12 sacks as a 3-4 DE.

That said, still don't see him at ND, because I see him playing in the Pac-12.

As long as coach O is at USC so will Eddie. He has publicly said that's the only way we waivers in his commitment. Btw that USC swagger is gone. Lane Kiffin team doesn't have that swagger that those Pete Carrol teams had. Petey teams would mentally beat you before the game even started.

at 6'3" 305 lbs, he could easily put on a few more lbs and be identical to NIX, if not a little more lean. I see him as a NT.

The thing with the Bellichek coaching tree 3-4 is that while has proven to be an effective defense that wins championships, it really stinks at times for the DL.

For DL to at times play two gap on the run is hard work and not always fun. As you are basically sacrifising yourself for the LBs glory. Yea Tuitt has 12 sacks but that is almost a miracle. Don't count on 3-4 ends getting double digit sacks too often. OLBs usually end up leading the team in sacks in a 3-4.

It is even worse for the NT in a 3-4 than it is for a DE. If Eddie V came to ND he would probably want be a DE so he could at least be turned lose a little bit more than he would at NT. ND though because of his size would be tempted to make him a Nose. This just me speculating but Eddie V may know this and not want this.

Very good points. Yes come to think of we do use alot of 4-3 with Ishaq or Shembo at DE. Yes 3-4 DEs are 4-3 DTs.

No, he's going to be a 4-3 DT pinning his ears back and penetrating through the interior on every play. The big difference between 3-4 and 4-3 DL responsibilities comes on standard/ rushing downs. A 3-4 DL has to two-gap, which usually results in a LB making the tackle. A 4-3 gets to one-gap, which means he can be in the backfield looking for a TFL on every play.

Now responsibilities are a lot different I get that but a good NT is very valuable to a team because there just aren't a lot that can do that.

Jadaveon Clowney will probably be a #1 draft pick. Louis Nix will not.

Lastly, we play a lot of 4-3. Not sure about numbers but from what I see when I watch its quite often.

Yes, we show an even front on passing downs (roughly 50% of snaps), which gives our DL the opportunity to rush the passer. See above. The difference is obvious on the other 50% of snaps. Vanderdoes has twice as many opportunities to make a big play in an aggressive 4-3 than he does in Diaco's 3-4.
