As a Sox fan, I never liked his uncle, but I wish Danny well wherever he goes.
Once spaghetti arms, always spaghetti arms. Spaghetti armed LBers for the loss.

Anyone should know better than to post bullshiit like this. Kids making big decisions. Here is a number: 0.00007 % Number of people that have posted on this board that know what it is like to compete at a level higher than the spitoon next to your bar stool.
I'm just disappointed in our fans that are happy we lost this kid. Few years ago we would have been really happy. Hope we as fans aren't getting greedy. I hope for the big names as much as anyone here, but don't forget that not all 5* turn out great or 3* turn out to be average. This kid may really develop once in college considering where he plays football. Deeb is only a 3*, but I can't wait to see him play.
-It's not like this kid wants to be here, but can't cut it grades-wise. He is consciously choosing to renege on a commitment, not us and not the school - him. I wish him the best wherever he lands, but he deserves no kid glove treatment IMO.

Its amazing how if ND pulls the commitment, when there are far superior prospects, its the Devil's work. A prospect can dump ND at the dance and thats okay. I wasnt big on this guy from the get go. Physically, he didnt look like he could compete. If Im a jerk because I want ND to have the best guys who can physically compete and be dominating, then Im a jerk I guess.
This kid has potential through the roof on either side of the ball. I know that some with opinions that matter thought he had a very ceiling and thought he was the steal of the class. In my opinion Mattingly is huge loss for this class. Granted we will fill the spot with a quality player when the spot becomes open, but this kids skill set is a rare combo.

I'd rather lose someone besides him but once we got Doug Randolph Mattingly became somewhat expendable.
Disagree on the expendable part, unless you mean because his heart isn't here. Talent wise, I think a lot of you are underrating him - skillset and versatility wise. He reminded me of a mix between Ben Councell and Troy Niklas, and would sure love to have him in the mix. We have seen what BK and Co. can do with big skill guys with his kind of talent.
The staff chose not to even visit him while on the west coast, correct? Doesnt sound like they were particularly distraught over the prospect of losing him.
Yes. If you really think its fine to offer a kid a scholarship and then pull it out from under him when something better comes along, then you are a jerk. ND shouldn't do that, and kids shouldn't string schools along either.
But I do agree that once the kid is looking around, or if his grades are on the borderline, that's a different subject. The key is to be upfront about your expectations.

Couldnt be farther from the truth with this statement. Randolph can play OLB/ILB or grow into a DE. He is perfect for the CAT position. Mattingly has the skill set to play CAT/DOG/MIKE/WILL and TE. The staff saw him as LB ala Anthony Barr and he wanted to play TE ala Anthony Barr. If you really look at his movements/coverage/step off the edge...its a bigger Jaylon. He isnt quite as agile but he has that step, range, and football sense.
All I know is recruiting star rankings don't win football games.
So ND offered over 100 prospects ranging from 3 stars to 5 stars. So if 20 3 stars said yes in the first month, should ND say no to all the 4 and 5 stars that may take longer weighing their options?
I understand the reasoning for offering 3 stars. While usually not gamebreaking players, they typically can play good football and obviously you have no idea how many 4 or 5 stars will come and you dont want an empty class. But you cant tell me Mattingly wasnt the WORST of the ND LB commits and probably wouldnt have played a lot of ball in comparison unless he just really turned it around college time. ND is looking at turning away good RBs and DBs so that this guy could have a spot at the table when odds are he wouldnt have been a great contributor in the end.
If you think thats the way to be field a winning team, you are wrong. Is it the "right" thing to do? Sure. But today unfortunately America and its ideologys are about Ws and Ls not the doing right thing anymore.
