As a Terp grad, there is no way my donations are going to keep rolling in. How can I financially support a University that chooses to pay a 50 mill exit fee? Maryland IS integral to the ACC-wtf? Terps bbal in B1G? Really?

MD football will improve with Edsall at the helm. It will take time, but I belive he can do it (not that I have ever supported the Terps in FB mind you).

Mistake of epic proportions IMO.

Couldn't agree more.

There is NO WAY Maryland pays the 50 million exit fee if they decide to make this move. They're already under fire for how the management of Athletics funds have been handled.
Here are some numbers to feast upon.
Revenue figures from 06' for Maryland Basketball's Net revenue $6,748,164 same revenue record show that 06' Maryland football brought in $3,535,774. Last years Fiscal year (2011)reveals that both Maryland Basketball and Footballs revenue dropped. Basketball in 2011 $4,482,714 that is a 34% revenue drop. While 2011 Football and this amazes me.. 2011 Revenue -$64,891 Which is a revenue drop of 102%. Maryland says they invest $67,389.71 into each Student Athlete each year. Also Athletics fundraising which numbers do no show up because of it being fundraising. Maryland reported due to poor economy and under preforming in athletics that fundraising dropped 40% in the last 5 years

All in all Maryland is in deep trouble, many state schools are going deeper into the hole do to over spending each year. Do not expect Maryland to be the only school with fiscal woes looking for solutions.

This is going to happen and will probably be announced in the next day or two. Alums have reportedly cashed in over sixty million in stock since last week to cover it. This is a great move for the Big Ten as it gets access to the east coast market.
As an IU basketball fan, I love it. Crean has expanded their recruiting turf to the east coast and it has payed trekendous dividends with back to back fourth ranked recruiting classes. This will only help their recruiting efforts there.

What a year for me, ND number one in football and Indiana number one in basketball.

It's a smart move for Maryland and Rutgers. It doesn't help the Big Ten's image, but definitely helps their footprint and their finances.

Who does that ACC grab to replace them and move back to 14? You'd have to assume Connecticut right? Louisville is an interesting pick though.

Jack Swarbrick has a theory:

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick speculated Saturday that News Corporation's minority purchase last week in the YES Network, a New York-based regional sports channel, could have played a role. News Corp. is the parent company of Fox, which also owns part of the Big Ten Network.

"If this occurs, this particular outcome does not come as a surprise," Swarbrick told reporters. "The timing is a surprise. If anything else was going to happen in the Big Ten, it was going to be east."

MD football is going to get smoked. They are terrible. Basketball is coming back around but still not top 15 like they used to be.

This seems like a bad idea to me. I see how it's good for the B1G but aside from money I fail to see how it is good for Maryland.

Does this mean FSU goes to the Big 12?

It's official, the BIG just added some more bad teams to their conference. I can't believe Delaney would want Maryland and Rutgers over ND.

He didn't. ND gave him the finger. Now he's scrambling for TV sets in growing media markets, and Rutgers + Maryland are all that's available.

This is all so poetic. We spurn the B1G for the ACC (while maintaining our independence), end our series with Michigan, return to national prominence, and Delany is forced to scramble for some East Coast small fry when he whiffs on ND. The ghost of Fielding Yost is gnashing his teeth in the 9th circle of hell.

It's like having to take your homely twin cousins to prom because you got rejected. Suck it, Delany.

To be honest, all of this super conference crap is just that, crap! The only team that has moved and made an impact is aTm. They were a good program to begin with. I have seen to many of these schools and conferences reach for something that to be honest is just not that attractive. Actually want to add Nebraska as a success story as well but they fit in the B1G. I was one of the guys at first that was a supporter of ND joining the B1G or any conf. at first and let me eat my words because I was dead wrong. This season has proven to me that ND stands alone with what they represent and should continue that forever! This is the best Monday that I can remember having in my life as a fan and I will relish this feeling as long as I can!

This isn't happening. ACC voted in a $50 million exit fee right after we joined for all sports but football. Nobody can afford to take a hit like that, least of all Maryland. Not to mention that the B1G is the most profitable conference in the nation; bringing on programs like Rutgers and Maryland would result in less money for everyone.

Maryland is announcing today that they are moving to the Big 10, followed by Rutgers on Tuesday. As a Big 10 fan-grew up there-I don't like it. I understand it brings in more TV sets, but who is pumped to see a Minnesota-Maryland football game?

None of the fans involved like this. The BTNetwork will allegedly make more money now that it'll be in two growing media markets, but it's not like the B1G was hurting for money previously. And in exchange, the B1G loses it's geographic coherence and historical identity, waters down its on-field product, and trades games people actually care about with new ones against the Terps and Scarlet Knights.

Makes zero sense. You guys oughta be calling for Delany's head.

Laugh at me all you want but I think Rutgers is a sleeping giant... or at least a sleeping perennial top 25. Local competition for NE football talent is paper thin.

Plausible, but that would require them to find the right coach and keep him long enough to establish some sort of monopoly on talent in the NE. That's not likely to happen, since Rutgers is a stepping stone job.

But the question isn't even "can Rutgers eventually be good?" It's "will Rutgers ever deliver a significant fan presence in the tri-state area?" And the answer to that question, for a lot of reasons, seems to be no.

I think it just takes the right coach to be honest. You need a Patterson or a Peterson or a guy like that who's willing to stick around and develop the program. Rutgers can get talent, they've shown that. They just need someone to develop that talent. They have a decent fanbase considering how bad they've been and for how long.

Rutgers is definitely a sleeping giant. We've seen how well they've competed with us for recruits when in the past they would have stood no chance. New Jersey is a football hotbed and if they can keep the players local and draw from NYC and Pennsylvania they can be a great program. UCLA and Rutgers are the two biggest sleeping giants in college football right now.

However, that doesn't justify getting rid of the Big Ten aura and geographic ties for some extra cash.

You could probably throw in a Northwestern and Vanderbilt, if you're just talking about location and talent pool if they ever became pretty competitive. Especially considering the academic draw too.

The BIG10 is turning itself into the BigEast, not even of yesteryear. People are not going to want to pay $100 a ticket at UM to see Maryland or Rutgers.

BTW: Nice rim job the BIG is pulling for OSU. Both of these power houses will be in OSUs division.

It is so freakin funny to see that NDs refusal of joining the BIG is possibly causing it to collapse. Be interesting to see which teams are 15 & 16.

Looks like FSU could be looking around also.

WTF? Does FSU really think it would be better off in the Big 12 than it is in the ACC? Thats 5 kinds of dumb.

Astonishingly, the Big12 is more stable than the ACC. Payouts are also larger. I'm so sick and tired of realignment though. It needs to stop.

I don't at all see how these additions show any sort of collapse. They will be rich rich rich and then some.
