Why is mayock the best in the biz again? Because he says things like "that's going to get called every time" and "this is fun" great stuff. I liked him when he started but he's just gotten hard to listen to.

Pitt may have punched us in the mouth but couldnt stand all 12 rounds with us, too bad you don't get w's for punching a team in the mouth.

When you start to show excellence, there is more room for people to be critical. We have worked up to the number 3 team in the nation. We have one of the best defenses in the country. We turned the ball over 3 times. We let Graham go for rougly 170 yds. He should be critical.

I think Mayock is one of the best color commentaries in the business.

^THis. Most of the time he has great insight during the game. Hammond justneeds to STFU.

We did not play our best. They commentators should be objectively criitical. And I think he was. We don't havet he tv contract to have a homer in the booth. If you wany a homer listen to the local raio call.

"This is fun" was the only problem I had with Mayock, simply said it too often. But then again, I'm sure it was a tremendously entertaining and "fun" game for viewers with no rooting interest to watch, so it was true.

I didn't think it was fun, because that game literally drained 4.5 years of life from my body. But that's because I had an interest. When I watch Thursday night games at work, I usually don't care one way or another. And the thrillers truly are "fun."

^ Exactly

I wasn't a big fan of that line, but I did step back once or twice and think...you know, this is a really entertaining game.

I think Mayock is excellent.

I agree. I was in the stands on Saturday so I don't know what Mayock was saying, but generally I think he is excellent. Praises our guys where appropriate and criticizes them where appropriate, as a good color guy should. He always points out interesting tactical things that I miss.

A lot of color guys just say cliches, but Mayock actually analyzes the game he is watching.

you guys all forget he's a BC guy :)

Seriously though there is nobody better than Mike Mayock, the guy is a legend and genuinely loves football and his job. Having him watch ND guys every other week is going to be huuuuuuuuge when they head towards NFL Draft time once they graduate. Come spring hes going to talking about nothing but Eifert on TV. This kind of exposure can only help ND.

e's an unbiased observer and that was a fun game for them. He's a great objective analyst and he's spot on in all his statements. I love having him and it just seems like some of you are whining over nothing.

I agree, he seems impartial to me. He's not supposed to be a big time homer. He's usually spot on with analysis. I didn't miss Tom Hammonds one bit.

It's just interesting that after ANY game, someone here is complaining about the announcing. The Navy announcers, Musburger, Hammond (okay, I don't much like Hammond), Mayock, Hayden, etc. That said, it's certainly not just ND fans that complain about bias.

It strikes me like ESPN coverage does. Most of this site claims a huge anti-ND bias there. Most of the rest of the world claims a huge pro-ND bias. That probably means you're doing something right.

Just my opinion. We just need to keep winning.

I think that asking for an announcer, on a network that is the home of Notre Dame football, not to appear to be rooting against Notre Dame is not all that unreasonable. The difference between the complaining about Mayock, and those that complain about Musberger, or any of the normal ESPN haters, is that Mayock is employed by "the home of Notre Dame football." People have a right to expect that the on-air talent that the network hires will NOT appear to be obviously anti-ND. I don't think Mayock hates ND or anything. I think he goes overboard, trying to appear to NOT be biased for ND. If you go back and look at the broadcast, during the review of Riddick's(?) non-fumble, and listen to Mayock; he's trying everything to prove that it was a Notre Dame turnover. There was nothing unbiased about that segment; it was pure, unadulterated bias for the opposing team. If that were the first time I had noticed it, then it would not be a big deal, but he has one (or more) of these "episodes", seemingly every broadcast.

NBC is doing everything they can to not be a homer network for Notre Dame. They just want to have the rights to the national brand. I understand that decision...it's why they hired a USC guy and replaced him with a BC guy.

He shouldn't be anti-ND, but I don't think he is. Oh well. Agree to disagree. We won. Go Irish.

it doesn't have to be an ND homer, but can we get announcers that aren't from our rival schools???

you cannot tell me that they don't enjoy watching ND lose. Mayock gets giggly as a school girl when we start to trip up. and almost every call that goes ND's way is vehemently argued, and one the flipside praised if they go the opposing teams way

I think you guys are waaaay too sensitive. If anything I think Mayock goes overboard with his accolades for ND players. He uses the terms "best in the country", or "NFL first rounder" for every Irish player that makes a big play it seems.

This has to be some kind of sick joke. Why would a network that airs all of our games live want us to lose? Jesus Christ.

What makes him one of the best in the biz is his incredible knowledge of the game and how to rate players, and the way he conveys that knowledge to his audience. He's not a cheerleader screaming in the background for every great play (like every SEC announcer), and he's not a baffoon screaming "That was a great play" every time a ND player takes a breath.

Sorry Mick, I just completely disagree with you here. You ARE being too sensitive IMHO, and a bit on the conspiracy theory side when you say he enjoys watching ND lose. He praises ND a TON, and yes, criticizes when we do poorly. And I'm glad he does that...

i'm glad your glad.

And i agree he has great knowledge of the game, that's what initially made me a fan of his, but he has regressed in my opinion.

and we can find someone who has incredible knowledge that didn't play or attend one of our rival schools.

It's time we start asking for more from the NBC broadcast, it is not the asset that it should be for our school.

everybody is a fan, me, you, broadcasters and former players like mayock. you can sit here and toot your horn all you like that you are an objective, unbiased broadcaster but I call bs. there is no such thing as an unbiased view in sports. I'm not saying he's going out there and betting the mortgage on pitt, but deep down whether you like it or not, he is a BC guy, and BC is a rival to ND. not too mention the whole "little brother" thing. and if your saying that doesn't make any difference in his opinions or analysis of ND, you're being naive.

never said the network enjoys it when we lose, but announcers that went to BC and USC respectively, probably like to watch ND trip up, especially in a year where we have a chance at a title.

Oh alright, I misinterpreted. Still respectfully disagree that they wanted us to lose against Pitt, but I see your point.

I could be wrong here but I believe Mr. Mayock was right on the money with something else he said late in the game.

"Ok, down by eight, undefeated season and national championship hopes on the line here Notre Dame, whadya got?"

I think they showed us a little of what they got.

That's what he was having so much "fun" with. I actually just got a little big jacked up when I read your post. It's particularly fun when you don't have a horse in the race, but are simply a football fan.

I actually had to MUTE the game because of the commentary...but i think what the issue was...we were losing, there was nothing positive to say for ND at the time so each praise for PITT or lack of ND praise was a dagger....after re-watching it....it def wasn't as bad as i thought or others on here believe it was.....it was things we didn't want to hear when things were going bad...we were just little too sensitive at that point in the game...i do love hearing his breakdowns on plays and helps to inform his audience.

So you are saying that EVERYONE makes poor decisions in their job because of biases??? Sorry dude, while there are many people that do allow their bias to affect decisions, there are MANY people, professionals, who do their jobs well and eliminate all biases because that is what professionals do.

For example, I have biases, but as a teacher I never let it effect how I grade someone. I may HATE how a parent has confronted me about something, but I NEVER let it affect how I treat the child. Same thing as a coach. I have a player on my team right now with a mom who has a mouth on her and doesn't like how a couple of things in the program are run (too much discipline), but I don't lower her son's playing time because of it.

And Mayock can be doing the same thing, and I believe he is. It's sad that fans of pretty much every single team always hate the announcers for some perceived slight or bias, and say that "ESPN hates us!!!" all the friggin time, when in many cases announcers are just doing their jobs to the best of their ability, and in many cases are actually right (how many people here have come on and started threads about how right a columnist was when picking against ND and admitted that we were all wrong??? Hint - NEVER).

So again, I guess we'll just agree to disagree. Don't want an ND cheerleader in the booth, and I'm glad we don't have one. He praises ND when we do well, and criticizes when we do poorly. And we sucked for much of the game on Saturday, and he said so. And when we did well, he said so too (and quick sidebar, that was a BS PI against Eifert). Peace...

what does your teaching job have to do with biased sportscasters? my post said that I don't believe that their is one unbiased opinion in sports.and really there isn't such a thing as an unbiased opinion at all. there are facts, and then there are opinions which are built upon someones underlying beliefs or feelings on a subject. My mother is a teacher, i respect the hell out of teachers but that has nothing to do with the conversation we are having.

and when it comes to ND, the most polarizing brand in College Football, these announcers can't help it, their underlying opinions on ND come out, whether it be positive or negative, and with mayock being a BC guy, I am not surprised it is mostly negative.

we get so caught up with cowherds comments on this board because he is the same way! he can't say we're good, because he's an sc fan at heart, whether he admits it or not.

They're all fans, fans of rival schools have their opinions on ND and they're usually not nice opinions, mayock tries hard to hide it, but it comes out. same with everybody.

If mayock just stuck to analysis instead of opinion like he did when he started, it would be a lot better of a broadcast.

...peace!
