I know there are all sorts of different polls and it's generally disputed, etc. but they just showed the graphic on ESPN that Alabama has 14 National Titles?

I thought it was somewhere along these lines:

Notre Dame - 11
Michigan - 11 (even though they claim 13)
USC - 11 (really 10.5 minus however many have been stripped due to sanctions)

Alabama and friends somewhere up there, but not immediately threatening the top 3 (something like 8, maybe 9 after last year?). I could be wrong though...

Anyone have any helpful insights?

There is an article Lou at BGI wrote on this during the summer. Will have to dig
on the site to find it. Also hope it is not premium.

If Alabama beats Michigan tomorrow, I'm pretty sure they'll be claiming another national championship. Hell, if they lose, they still might claim a national championship, but from the 40's or something...

I went thru a list of all polls and championships from the early 1900's and if Notre Dame counted every poll and every agency as Ala claims to do Notre Dame would have at minimum 19 national championships by some type of poll. You have to just laugh off Ala people as the crazy uncle because the more they talk about it the more they believe it. In reality I think they now have 9. Still it doesnt take away from their play today so I give them their due as a fine pro football franchise! This just in -Ala just made a first down and claimed another national championship. There is an entire generation of Ala fans that do not know Ala does not have 14 national championships. I dont like to talk about it much as it makes a Notre Dame look like he's living in the past with the way the program has deteriated. But non the less yes we are still on top with 11. But the way Notre Dames 11 are considered concensus titles meaning it was a voted given that 11 times they were voted the best by the most important poll. Anyway you cut it to speak of it now is living in the past.

Alabama counts a title even if it was only mentioned in the Eastaboga Evening Gazette by the part time sportswriter/4H reporter putting up a list of his favorite teams in 1908.

Most people count NCs from 1936 with the first AP Final Poll.

There is no concensus on number of championships for Bama because most people associated with that university can't count or read the polls when they are released. On that note, for tonight only, ROLL TIDE!!!

Here in TN, Vols fans claim to have 5 NCs. I thought they only had 2 or 3. You would think there would be some type of website that states the actual amount for each year and team.

Out of date, but explains the issues with Alabama's "claimed" national championships.

Alabama's 12 Mythical National Championships | Bleacher Report

Honestly wish ND would claim the 13 or 17 or whatever because everyone else does.

Man those Bama fans are butt hurt in the comments sections.

The author said ND could realistically claim 21 National Titles based on his research of the different polls throughout the years. That ish cray.

Alabama does not have 14 titles

I will agree with the original poster. Alabama in no way has 14. ESPN reported after their BCS Championship win over LSU that the school had won it's 9th title in school history. To give them the benefit of the doubt, the NCAA's official website gives them 12. Both however, are less than 14. It's sad that even the university itself seems to have tricked itself into believing it actually has 14 titles, as it's plastered all over Tuscaloosa. Whether it be 9 or 12, both are respectable numbers, and claiming false titles with such fervor does nothing but irritate the rest of the country. I mean, while we're claiming things that belong to other people, I think I'm going to march my *** up in my neighbor's house and "claim" his TVs so my 3 TVs now become 6 TVs.

I live in Birmingham & boy is it annoying with their "mythical" NC's! I need ND to start printing shirts, bumper stickers, signs (anything) so I can proudly display! "Got 21?" :))

It's just frustrating for me (as someone who loves to have concrete numbers) that this aspect of college football is so muddled and subjective (...not unlike a certain bowl system now that I think of it...).

I know it's because of all the different polls and ranking systems or what not, but it still irks me that you can't really set a number in stone.

Anyways... here's to hoping our 11 (or mythically, 21) becomes 12 (or mythically, 22) in the not too distant future :)

I live here too and it is very annoying. I try to explain the difference in how ND has class in the way we claim our NC's and they are just blind to facts. They also say the SEC is so tough, yet justify all the teams' weak OOC schedule as necessary to get their players in sync, backups experience and the best was to share the wealth with smaller schools.
