Next week he'll say he's giving up football to become a priest. Then he'll say he's favoring Tennessee Tech. Then six weeks after signing day, he'll commit to FIU.

He doesn't have to give up football to become a priest at ND. Just saying.

So, if we get Luke, Redfield, and Muhammad, do we still have room to take Mac? Just curious because at this point it's very possible

Alexander is an automatic take. An elite player at a position of need that you have a spot for late in the game. I still don't think we land Luke but Redfield is possible and Muhammad is pretty much a sure thing.

Good question: If it is a first come first served basis on CB's and Moore or Cole jump on board to secure their spot. Many have speculated that the class would be full because Muhammed is a silent. Now would you make room for Redfield? Then there are at least two others Mack and Folston who look to be going down to signing day not to mention Treadwell. All three are being actively recruited and ND is trending positively with two of those. Do you tell any of those three no. If Anzalone EE's this class is busting at the seams and with ND's continued on the field success it only makes things more interesting.

I know many have speculated that have respected opinions around here that the fifth years will likely have precedence but I think Kelly will do the contrary. He's always got his eye toward the future and long term success which high 4 star and 5 star types would bring.

Is it really? If all current commits stick, we're already projected to have 8/8 at CBs for 2013. If Shumate moves back to SS, Cole or Moore still tops us off. Alexander is obviously an elite talent, and the staff will surely try to make room for him if possible, but we may very well be full by the time he decides.

That's suddenly a very interesting question again. Earlier this season, 3-5 5Ys seemed very likely: Z. Martin and Watt (because our OL wasn't playing well enough), Fox, and maybe C. Wood (since he wasn't getting enough touches) and Calabrese. Now, Z. Martin may very well end up jumping to the NFL, and Wood seems more likely to do so now as well. If Jarrett is truly the werewolf Diaco believes him to be, then we may only end up bringing back Watt and Fox. But that seems to be an absolute minimum right now. I'd still bet on 3 5Ys-- we really need another year out of Z. Martin.

We couldn't take three more DBs, I don't think. Who we take probably depends on timing. If we got Luke and Redfield I don't see how there would be a spot for Mack. All three are top 100 players.

It probably won't come to that, though. Right now the staff is focusing on getting one of our six remaining DB targets. If they do get one, they might adjust their strategy, who knows.

I tend to agree that Kelly is looking toward the future. I can see Kelly telling Fox and Calabrese NO, but if Martin and Watt want back, you take them to solidify your Oline. Wood is not getting the carries to make a very good impression on NFL scouts, but if Wood comes back, I dont see how Kelly says no.

I personally consider Muhammad a silent, so I include him already. so 3-4 more recruits after Muhammad is not completely out of the question. Redfield and Alexander are pure studs, Folston would help to solidify depth at his position... after that... hmmm

If Luke or Moore commit soon, things could get interesting in the numbers game.

Great point. We need star power at CB, not depth. Any of our remaining targets gives us that (with the possible exception of Moore, if you want to nitpick). Luke and Redfield are exceptional talents.

Pretty spot on, but damn, it sure is fun to speculate.

Those four come know matter what. And don't ask me what happens if they all want to commit because it won't happen.

You really think that Kelly wouldn't want to bring back one of the starters on possibly the best defense in the nation? I think fox is a lock to come back.

Last season, I did not expect Eifert to come back and he did. Hopefully, Martin does the same.

Our program is very sexy right now and some of these type of kids like to leverage that to get attention.

Yeah. I think we have to bring back at least one of them. They've earned it. They're proven veterans who've won big games, and not just in high school. And, frankly, if we let them both go, we've got no ILBs on the roster with any significant playing time, which just seems unwise.
I get the "eye on the future," and that's great. But there's a lot to be said for guys who've been to the rodeo a few times already.
Personally I think we return Wood, Martin, Watt and Fox. I've lost track of the scholarship numbers, but odds are, someone decommits or transfers before this becomes an issue. Happens every year, and makes these debates about who to dump seem kind of silly. (I still hearken back to conversations on this board last January about whether we should dump KLM to make room for the Armstead brothers)

It's a damn shame we have limited spots in the 2014 class. You saw what Michigan was able to do after a BCS run last year. Kids will be lining up to get on this bus.

Really hope that we can recruit our '14 class along the same lines as USC did their '13 cycle.

Gawd I know. Would be so fun to recruit for purely star power. 15 five-star/high four-star players? Yes please.

for this reason we can't be too crazy about not having 10 commits by the summer, with limited spots i can see the staff being very patient and waiting on the elite guys to decide.

All good points here fellas: I too am enjoying this beatiful dilemma. Finding the right balance of returning star power and incoming star power is soo much more fun then scrambling for recruits or granting seemingly unlikely 5th years, at the end of the process after a decommit or two.
It makes for a good story when a walk on who's been working hard in practice gets a schoolly and he's rewarded for all his efforts.
It makes for a good football team when high 4 and 5 star recruits bump out those chances of a average 5th year or walk on wanting in in Feb.
