I recently watched a video on tthe ND Athletics youtube channel about the genious of Ara. The whole video was about Ara being able to take players and put them in their best fit position. I see alot of this same thing with Kelly, which got me excited about the future.

Conversely, I did not see this with Weis at all. I think Kelly knows his players well and is using them to his best advantage right now. Hence Troy at TE, and Theo back at running back, Russell, Farley, etc... That video really hit home with me. If you have not seen it, check it out.

No reason you can't have it both ways. Just gotta recruit.

Many of the power houses specialize on one side of the ball, and play well enough on the other side though. You can be steallar on defense and pretty good on offense, or visversa, but very few teams are great across the board in every game. Even at the top level you'll find many of the big players only blowout the cupcakes and doormats of their conference. Sure, there are those few teams that can pull off both, but it's not usually an every year thing. Look at Alabama. They always have a very good defense, but the offense is average in comparison. Flip side is Oregon with high octane offense and okay defense usually. Oklahoma probably is one of the few teams that does both well, but it's hard to compare because there are so many teams in the Big XII that stress offense and don't play defense well at all.

Did anyone watch Coach Kelly's presser from Thursday? He said one thing that was particularly interesting. He was asked about the difference between the offenses he fielded at Cincy and CMU versus the current ND offense. He said that at Cincy and CMU, one of his jobs was to sell tickets. They needed to be exciting to put people in the stands. Attendance is not an issue at ND, therefore he cares only about winning. The best way to win is with defense and running the ball. Therefore, it appears ND will never have that air raid type offense dropping half-a-hunnert every Saturday. I think Coach wants this team to look alot more like Saban's team than the other Kelly's team from Nike U. And I am perfectly fine with that.

He actually said that last year, but no one paid attention cause we sucked. Now that we're good and people are paying attention, that quote picked up some steam and got some play. But it was something that he had already mentioned (and yes, I found that very interesting too when I first heard it)...

As a Vikings and Braves fan I envy you sir.

Psh, at least the Braves were good in fairly recent years! Try Notre Dame, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers fan. Thats championship futility there. Last championship for any of those teams was the Irish in '88. I'm 30 now, but was only 6 in '88. Before that you have to go back to the '60s with the Browns, and the '40s for the Indians. Cavs got nothin'. Probably could have been a Buckeye fan first and Irish fan second growing up in Ohio...na, doesn't feel right. :dead:

Which is exactly what I want. I know "defense wins championships" is a cliche but there's a reason that the SEC wins it all every year. They out-muscle and wear down their opponents. Like that Cierre Wood from the Miami game, “But when you smack a team so many times in the mouth, eventually they’re going to want to stop playing, and that’s what happened today.” That's what I want from this team. Gimmick fun 'n gun offenses are exciting but how many championships do those teams win?

I've always wondered which is worse: to be a fan of a team that perpetually sucks (Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland sports teams, etc.) or to be a fan of a team just good enough to tease you with the promised land but choke once you get too close. It's like asking which is worse, getting blown out or losing a close game. Neither one is pleasant but which is worse?

All I can tell you is that after the first few years being "good" gets old. When you have three of the greatest pitchers to ever put on a uniform in your rotation you should win more than 1 World Series. And look at this year, MLB decides to create some new Wild Card play in game and as soon as it was created every Braves fan in the world knew we were going to get screwed in that game. We finished with 94 wins, 5th most in baseball, 6 games better than the Cards, with a 5-1 head to head record against them. We had the hottest pitcher on the planet in our stadium. Of course we lose because we're the Braves. We choke so hard that MLB had to create an additional game just to ensure we choked.

But no team lets me down like my old reliable Minnesota Vikings. It's like clockwork, once a decade they must choke in the NFCCG to baptize a new batch of young fans into the Vikings clan. My baptism was 1998, Vikings vs. Falcons. Best offense in NFL history (at that point), a kicker who hadn't missed a FG all year! In our dome with Randy Moss still in his prime (hell he was a rookie still)! And we lose and of course Gary Anderson misses the FG that would have iced the game. My wife, who was not a Vikings fan growing up as she is from Florida, got her baptism in 2009 watching Brett Favre throw away our Super Bowl hopes in the Big Easy.

Yes sir. I also loved the part when he commented on recruiting and stated it all starts with defense. I am a defense guy and watching this years team execute and who we are bringing in, ....yikes!

I'm a defense guy as well. I think I was more excited to get Manti Te'o than I would have been to get say the #1 Quarterback or Running Back. Just think if we stay with our current identity of being a tough defensive team that punishes opponents and out muscles them, getting Manti Te'o could be looked at years from now as the turning point in the resurgence of the Irish. Manti Te'o perfectly embodies what it means to be a student-athlete and I hope even after he leaves for the NFL (hey Vikings...you need a LB I'm just sayin'...) that his character and passion have made an impression on the younger guys and that carries on with us.

I'm not saying it's easy. But if BK can install an offense that is considered "quirky" and still play defense, imagine the possibilities.

Wouldn't you like this year's ND defense with a Mike Leach offense? That sounds terrifying to me.

I'm not sure this is quite valid. I definitely think he realizes that having a strong defense if the most important thing, so he started there when he started building this team, and I think he thinks the best way to win with this team, this year is with defense and running the ball. But if you heard him on Cowherd earlier this week, it sounded like he is more comfortable with the pass-happy offense that he's run in the past, but he just doesn't have a QB who is ready to run that type of offense yet (though Golson may get there soon). So his run-the-ball, control-the-clock, limit-mistakes game plan is what he's doing this year; might be different in the future.

Just need some DBs though. I'm loving what BK is doing. I was even happy with last season. You could see the potential despite the mistakes.

Thanks for posting this; this proves what I'm saying. The part we're talking about is toward the end, after 12:00 I think. He says twice that we will continue to focus on the defense, and the offense will evolve around the personnel we have. We will keep recruiting guys who can help us pound the ball, but we will also recruit spread personnel who can sling it and make people miss. So I don't think it's fair to assume that we'll continue to be a grind-it-out offense in future years ... if we get the right personnel to run a spread offense successfully, it's air raid time.

It is an upset since you guys are at home and are 11 point favorites.

Did I say it wasn't an upset? I'm aware how "upsets" work.

You're undefeated and ranked higher. We're favored by bettors. It's not much of an upset if you win, like I said.

I think almost all objective observers would consider it an upset if ND won despite the higher ranking.

Good lord people, I said "not much of an upset". I didn't say it WASN'T an upset.

Hell, the BCS forumla has ND ranked higher than Oklahoma. Can't wait to upset y'all this weekend!

Lol, I get what you are saying. "Not much of an upset" is fair enough. True, OU is favored and most (nearly all) commentators are picking OU to win, and if ND wins, most people will be surprised, but it's not like this is OU vs. KU that we're talking about here.

I disagree. I think it was be a big upset. I mean you guys have only lost 4 times at home under Stoops. That is ridiculous.

Unfortunately, his statement actually makes sense. But he's an OU fan, so who cares...

Normally when you say something to them that doesn't make sense, they just say,"Boomer Sooner."

It's Oklahoman for, "well fvck."
