It is hard to imagine Tommy Rees ever developing the mobility of Everett Golson. The arm? Maybe. Someday. But not the feet. Some things you're either born with or not.

I don't think he will on either account but he can improve and that is what is important. He doesn't have to have Golson's arm or legs to be effective. Add a little arm strength and a touch of escapeability in the pocket and you have a pretty damn good QB. What is between the ears is as important as the physical talent (just take a look at Crist).

What exactly did Mendenhall say? I did some Googling, but all I found was an artcile where he answered some questions with generic responses how BYU isn't for everyone, and it seemed to be a knock more against Notre Dame than Te'o.

On the other hand, the article had some comments made of gold at the bottom. This was one of them:

I had to laugh at the bolded part. This was the article I found: Bronco Mendenhall Certainly Doesn't Think Manti Te'o Is A Bad Mormon - SBNation.com

I guess I remembered it coming from Bronco's mouth, but i'm not sure that he publicly stated it. That being said, he did nothing to stop (many believe he started) the rumors of Teo having sex and drinking on his recruiting trip to BYU. Then later said that he felt Teo didn't come to BYU because of him not wanting to do a mission and not wanting to abide by BYU's honor code.

If Teo doesn't hold hard feelings, I have hard time believing that Kona Shwenke doesn't...

Agreed, but it is by no means a given that Golson will ever mentally get to Tommy's level. I don't think that Rees will turn into Golson anytime soon but if he can add a little bit of movement within the pocket that is all he would need.

That, and to not throw into double coverage on every redzone possession. I'm not trying to bash him at all because I realize he has been lights-out in his limited possessions this year, but I would still be nervous if he got a full game's worth of action.

I see. That Shwenke article is more damning than the Te'o stuff I think. Couldn't believe that Shwenke was committed to BYU, wanted to visit Notre Dame and Washington, and BYU threatens to pull their scholarship offer if he goes. I understand BYU lives by a different set of rules...but thats just messed up. Their loss I guess.

I would like to see Golson as the quarterback but I'm comfortable with Rees in there. Golson is more athletic and all but Rees has the experience. Tommy is great at reading defenses and I love to see that.

Either way, we will be perfectly fine with either quarterback.

Put Golson at QB, with Rees flexed out wide, Hendrix in the slot and Kiel in the Pistol. That will confuse the s*$t out of everyone.

If Golson is healthy, he should play. Reps now = hopefully not having this convo at this time of the season next year.

Agree. If Golson is clear to play, then he needs to not only start but play as much as possible. He's still got plenty of kinks to work out and needs to work on them fast before the Irish head to Norman.

Tommy is better at reading the defense pre-snap, but once the ball is snapped Tommy locks in on one receiver and doesn't see other receivers who are wide open. We have had several players step up and make key receptions at critical moments. Everett sees the whole field after the snap and has the mobility to buy time. He is much better at spreading the ball around to multiple receivers throughout the game.

The only drawback to Golson is that he has a tendency to fumble the ball. But let us not forget that Tommy had 19 turnovers last season. Many of those turnovers were momentum shifters that cost us wins.

I won't be surprised if Rees starts over Golson, but if Rees is the starter every snap is a potential turnover and none of us will be able to relax until time expires in the fourth quarter. Rees looks great one game and awful the next. The problem with that is the team is destined to mediocrity with Tommy as the starter. He will win some games for the team, but he will also lose nearly as many as he wins.

I meant significantly faster and stronger. It's not like next year Tommy will have the arm strength like Golson, or the speed. It's God given talent.

So is the ability to process information (defensive alignments, feints, reading in sync with your receivers, blitz, audibles) at Division I speed. Lots of QBs who did so at the HS level don't "get it" in college. Five years later with a different head coach who is recognized as a master of coaching QBs, Dayne Crist still struggles with the same issues. Carlyle Holliday acknowledged he never "got it" as a Div I QB. Yet both were bright enough to succeed in the ND classroom where competition is keen.

Like lifting weights to develop strength or working out with a speed coach to increase speed, a QB can watch hours of film and throw thousands of balls in drills to try to improve processing but everybody doesn't improve to the next level.
