I'm learning this now. Kids committing early will always have both ups and downs. You'll always have strongly committed kids throughout the whole recruiting process while others will look around. And so the roller-coaster ride until NSD begins.

If we lose danny we need to 2 elite te's in the 14 class. Unless we knock it out of the park on the d line and move Matuska to te.

If he wants to play TE, I honestly don't want him as part of this class and would rather use the scholarship on someone else. Completely different opinion if he was all in on LB. Sorry! Just being honest. He has potential to be a stud DOG LB, but you can't tell me taking him as a guy who wants to be the #2 TE in this class (especially when we have Matuska already who could shift over in a pinch) would be better than using that scholarship on a "best available" for another position.

Especially when we already have Randolph and Jaylon who can play DOG. Hope if it's true it doesn't drag out.

Why? We have Welch, Koyack, Niklas, Heurman at minimum for next year... with an outside chance you could even see Eifert come back, but I doubt it. Adding another elite TE is hardly a priority with ~3-4 spots left.

Recruiting is a crazy thing. I really don't like seeing these kids decommitt but i would rather do that then transfer out and make it more difficult for everyone involed. With us being better then expected we have opened some doors for ouselves.

My post said if we only get one te this year we need two next year.

Shot down by Danny... paraphrasing:

Says he had no idea why someone would report that, that it isn't true, that the person needs to get their facts straight, and he sounded upset about it being reported.

I stand by what I said... if he wants to come here as a LB or flexible "big skill" where the coaches will move him to where he needs to be to help the team... great. If his heart is truly set on only being a TE and Washington wants him as that, I hope he goes to Washington.

I like Mattingly's potential almost as much as I like Jaylons to be honest. Danny can play any position along the LB unit and as mentioned always can be moved to TE. Jaylon is an outside guy with his skill set and build, but Mattingly has a combination of skills to play inside and outside. He isnt quite at Jaylons pass coverage in space, but he reads plays as well, and is more physical. Like Ben Councell he has a combo of build/athleticism that is just a rare combo. Those two could end up 6'5 250 and not miss a beat.

I agree, for the most part. I will be really disappointed if Danny flips. He is a great athlete who can help us in a lot of ways. Rare combination of strength and speed. He's not as critical to this class as someone like Anzalone, just because we already have two other guys at his position, but that doesn't change the fact that he has the potential to be a great player for us.

And if he wants to play TE that doesn't turn me off at all, if Kelly wants to keep playing two and three tight ends at once. We can use another body at that position, in that case.

He shot down that he had decommitted, and vehemently so, but in no way did he reinforce his decision to ND. We have seen before a kid get mad about someone reporting a decommitment early, only to still do so later. I am going to wait and see on both Danny and AA until they either reaffirm or decommit. Recruiting really is on a backburner for me because of the way this season is going, but it is refreshing that only 2 of our commits out them all are even taking other visits. I'll take that all day.

It's interesting that both possible DECOs in question are at LB. I wonder if there's anything to that.

Maybe they don't think an elite LB can flourish in our system.

It's case by case and has nothing to do with the position. AA is a life-long gator fan, his dad was a gator, and he just visited during the best possible game. What's surprising about him seeing himself in Gainsville? And Mattingly just visited Washington, his home-state. Nothing surprising.

LBs are killing it in this system. Flemming just got drafted, Prince will find his way on an NFL team, Manti is the best LB in the country, and I also think Ishaq will make the NFL. Ishaq is going to be a freak before he's done here.

I would hate to see this kid go, think he has a lot of upside and potential at many positions. However I am kind of bummed because Danny didn't seem like the type of kid who cares more about playing a certain position than being part of something special at ND.

When was the last time this kid was on campus? Get him back for a game or the banquet at end of year and he will remember why he committed.

He had a blast at UW for the USC game. He is still committed to ND. He is really annoyed that this rumor started on Twitter. He is trying to focus on his HS team and a playoff push.

I don't think he is going anywhere.

I am relieved now. I really like him in this class as well and hope he stays solid until NSD!

I tried that in high school with the ladies. Didn't work until college when they didn't know eachother. Makes it much easier.

I told a student a few years ago that he was not be "committed" to his girlfriend if either could leave any time anyone more interesting came along with absolutely no practical consequences. His girlfriend did not find this revelation amusing in the least.

All committment means these days is that you are expected you to give the significant other a head's up before you move on.

But that's OK, because everything is OK!

I hope Danny Football sticks around until the vows are exchanged. Go Irish!

Reading between the lines here, it doesn't look good at all.

When asked to talk about his ND commitment, he said he just wants to focus on his senior season and winning a state title with his current team (this does not sound like somebody who knows where he's going to play college ball). When probed again, he said he's committed but still taking visits.

He was unwilling to make any firm comments that squashed any doubt about his recruiting/commitment to ND.

He also seemed more upset about the person on twitter spreading the rumor than the actual content of the rumor.
