Browns fans aren't the only fans who boo their own players. If really you want to hear home players booed, go to a Yankees or Red Sox game.

And besides, Browns fans have a reason to boo :none:

What is wrong with booing your own team. How else do you think paying fans should show this displeasure? Just wondering. I live in Columbus an they ha the worst/laziest hockey team ever last year. Fans booed like crazy. Fans are the ones paying for the athlete to be there. This is a business and it is the players and coaches job to perform. This is true for college and pro.
People complain because ND is queit when the team is medicore at home. Then they complain when the fans boo. So would you like them to just cheer no
Matter what and call it a day?
In the end this is the business of entertainment and built on winning defining success. When is the last time 80,000 people showed up to see a kid take a test?

Just an FYI for those who weren't at the game...... they didnt say anything about Golson being hurt. We had NO idea at all that anything was wrong with Everett. The announcer didn't say anything.... This absolutely contributed to the boos that were heard.

I just want to say that for the first time in my life, I am absolutely ashamed to be a fan of the Irish.
Today I was barely able to watch the game due to being at work. No volume, and noticed Rees drive us down the field and win at the end. I come home to rewatch the game, and have to listen to our "fans" boo our own.

What I am ashamed of is our fanbase. Now I am a homer, like most on here. But the absolute lack of class that our "fans" have shown today is sickening. I would mainly just call some of you stupid for calling for Kelly's head today for starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008...but to f*cking boo a kid like Tommy Rees who came in cold, after a suspension to play for an injured teammate, is beyond ridiculous.
Don't even give me an excuse that you didn't realize that Golson was hurt, that point is invalid. Tommy served his suspension, and I was as mad at his stupidity as anyone. But if there is a group of people in this country that should know something about forgiveness, it should be our fanbase.

You don't boo a kid playing a sport like this, let alone someone that represents the team you supposedly root for. I feel bad for some of you. And you should be ashamed and embarrassed. And I pray that someday soon in your life that you have some sort of clarity.

End rant.

Was at the game, and was surprised to see Rees enter. I was stunned at the amount of boos in your home stadium. If directed at Rees, pretty classless. These are kids playing. If directed at Kelly...careful what you ask for folks. I didn't realize at the time that Golson had been injured, so it made more sense upon learning that. Also, Rees did what he had to do...move 'em down quickly for a winning FG. Gonna be a crazy year.

BTW if Rees has that season he ha at any big time school last year and trotts out there like he did yesterday the boos would have been ten times louder. This is sports, not a coddling contest. Rees answered the boos (kinda). Good for him for not blowing it this time.

The "this is sports" line is a cop out. It's not about coddling. No one said to put a blanket on the kid or the coaches or the team. It's about having some confidence and patience to let the game play out. The score was tied with enough time for ND to take the ball down and score. It was an opportunity to win, not lose. Those boos were a display of defeatism at its worst. But you're right about one thing, that weakness is a persistent quality of every college fan base. Winning in football is having a winner's mentality. And cheering isn't coddling, it's believing you'll win.

I was there. There were a lot of people frustrated with how the game was being run. Then Kelly sent out Rees. Not putting words in people's mouth but some of it was directed at Kelly and his decision making. Not saying nobody booed Rees but he wasn't the only one being booed.

I couldn't believe the stands booing Tommy after that incomplete pass. I was just blown away. Yes, he lost us a lot of games and theres some anger against him, but to boo him after coming in the game for Golson??
Yes, that is very, very sad.

In Tommy's defense he has lost a lot less games than other quarterbacks in the last 20 years.

I was at game, I did not boo. Was I disappointed at first to see Rees, yes. (I saw him warming up on sidelines, so was prepared) I just think with the schedule this year, we probably won't be in a BCS game, why not keep Golson in the game for experience. But after a quick thinking session, why not put Rees in. Golson had to look toward sideline for playcall and run play clock down with almost no time left each play. We had no timeouts left. Also after hearing post game presss conference on radio and learning Golson was injured, even a better move. It worked out great, so everyone needs to stop whining. Golson is still the starter.

So either:

1) Tommy Rees is better than Jimmy Clausen

or

2) That stat doesn't mean anything

And yes, I guess we're doing this again...

It's really sad to see some of you try to make excuses and cop outs for booing a collegiate athlete of your own team.

I think both, booing Tommy and saying you're ashamed of the fan base for doing it, are both overly dramatic reactions.

Sports does crazy things to people. We'll all live.

Assuming that every single person in the stadium was booing Kelly, not Rees, I still cannot comprehend how this even makes a difference. Do you think Tommy, after being suspended and missing the Navy game (obviously his fault), knew that when students, alumni, and fans were booing, it was directed at Kelly? That is a bad copout and using that as an excuse pretty much shows selfishness by not thinking about the player running out on the field.

COmes with the territory. You're always gonna have the boo birds.

You want a passionate fanbase? You got it. Good and bad. And yes, they blend in most cases.

I can appreciate what you are saying...makes sense.

I want it all though...I want fans like Kelly wants players...

Since I wasn't there and couldn't go all purple face, and slap the sh!t out of anyone...I got guilt....and I plan to use it like Bill Cosby's shop teacher (hardly anyone under 40 gets the Cosby reference...I know). Not whining...unless you think that'd work???

Booing at ND stadium is nothing new. Faust and Holtz were booed, as were Davie and Willingham. Weis got more of a pass because he was an alumnus, but he was still occasionally booed.

Weis was only booed on occasion? Each game I went to he was coach for were a chorus of boos, almost all directed at him.

I was pretty anxious seeing Rees warming up on the sideline as well, but this was from home. When you are at the stadium, mob mentality is a big part of the game, for better and for worse. I appreciate your response, because it puts into perspective that football is as much a game of emotion as it is ability, preparation, and execution. I was more disappointed in hearing the boos because we (as fans) demand so much of our players and coaches, yet when they need us the most, we turn on them in the blink of an eye.

Honestly, it's somewhat of a relational problem to being a fan of Notre Dame football. With all the tradition and mystique partnered with the highs and mostly lows of our past 20 years, we have developed somewhat of an overinflated sense of expectation that sucks the life out of some of these games. Instead of viewing a very tough matchup with a respectable opponent, we assume we should be knocking the socks off every team. It just doesn't work that way. Sometimes a team has to gut out a win.

The team did that. The majority of fans did that. Hopefully, the remaining get their attitudes up. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, but these games should be fun and exciting. When Coach Kelly said the players were treating the stadium like the Basillica, it made sense from a fan's experience as well. Some people need to stop bringing all the "sins" of the past to the game, and just enjoy the opportunity to watch our PRESENT players duke it out. This apocalypse **** needs to stop.

With that said, hopefully, other fans are as honest with themselves as you are. We all have our moments. Unfortunately, we have quite a few arrogant psuedo-fans that are permanently sucking rotten eggs. Every fan base has 'em. The best thing to do is make them ineffectual by cheering even louder and being unashamed of the school you love. If being loyal is being a homer, at least a homer lives the proud and not the loser.

First of all, thanks for this post. Really, really well put.

I especially agree with the bolded parts. At times on Saturday, I found myself expecting a win so much, that it was hard to enjoy because not everything was going perfectly. I certainly realized that this isn't how it should be, and you can bet I won't catch myself being thinking/feeling that way again. I will be relishing every good moment, whether it's a GW field goal against Purdue, or a last second touchdown to win the national championship. I guess it's all part of maturing as a fan. And like you said, we will just have to drown out the egg-suckers (of which there are many).

Go Irish!
