This sucks because I love Joe. BK is not above criticism, but Joe went about it the wrong way, and worse than that, he was just flat-out wrong in most of his comments. And why would he be bitter about his son??? He played at the JC in the city directly north of my house, and not only could he not win the starting job there, when he did get in he SUCKED. And he expects his son to get the job at ND??? Sigh...the guy is such a stud and such a legend I want to look the other way and let it pass.

Say it ain't so Joe, say it ain't so.

But the semantics are not really the point; you are all just assuming that Montana is mad at Kelly for not starting his kid. What did Montana say that was inaccurate?

Wow kmoose, you must not have been paying attention to what Joe has been saying since his son left the school. It's out there (EDIT: it was just posted above); he is pissed about it. And again, his son literally sucked arse; he wasn't even good enough to start in high school (thus the transfer).

As far as Joe statement, you really think nothing is false??? How about this:

Every one of his QBs that he has, he claims is his next star, but he doesn't last long with him.

That is SUCH bullcrap. Please show me ONE quote from BK that he has said either Rees or Dayne were going to be stars, or anywhere close to that. He might have said good things, but when did he say they'd be stars???

How about this one:
He's probably the least talented thrower that they have, so maybe they're looking to run the ball with him.

You don't need to be in games to see/know that. The kid is one of the most prolific passers in the history of high school football, he's done it in front of reporters in practice, and he's done it in B&G games twice. It is painfully obviously that he's a better thrower/passer than Rees. That doesn't mean that we're calling him the next great thing, it just means we follow ND football a helluva a lot closer than Joe does now.

Oh, and how many times do you think Joe has seen Everett in practice? Zero? Remember, he hates BK, so why would he be at a practice??? Sorry, as much as I love Joe, this sounds like MAJOR sour grapes to me, and it pains me to say that considering the stature of the man and everything he did for ND...

EDIT: Not closing the thread bogs. It's a pertinent topic that people want to discuss. It's being discussed on every ND board I've seen. If people get hurt over words said here, then they shouldn't be on message boards anyway...

If Montana has a problem with Kelly then that is between them, but to say Golson is the least talented thrower on this team is just stupid. It shows that he has no idea what he is talking about. If asked about ND football he just shouldn't comment because he sounds ignorant.

I heard he also hated Rudy. He is bitter at Kelly because of his son and wanted Clements as the head coach.

I went to school with a one time national record holder for yards in a season and career (which has since been broken). He opted for baseball, wrong choice....

Well, something's not right...... because, according to his bio, he should be in this record book, for total yards, as well:

I would venture to say that, either A) South Carolina is not part of this National Federation of State High School Associations (and, therefore, their players are not recorded), or............. B) George O'Leary wrote the bio for Golson, at nd.edu. I would vote for A.

Will say I kind of feel bad for Montana's sons. Not an easy road to walk. Look at Jordan's kids. And then both cycle through major programs before winding up at, well, are they even FCS schools? How many colleges has Nate gone to?

As for Joe and ND, as I recall he's never been the most active member of the Monogram Club. I believe he shot an ad on campus in the late '90s and it was the first time he'd been back, ever. But he obviously feels wronged by Kelly and I guess that's his right. No need to **** on Golson, though.

I'm not outraged, but he does seem like a smug ***. BK gave Dayne a year, gave Tommy 16 starts. If you had other options that fit your offense better, have more athleticism and stronger arms, why would you stick with Tommy and before Tommy, Dayne made the same mistake over and over again.
Worst thrower? Come on now dipshit.
Joe was great for ND, but he doesn't seem to embrace the program or BK, so by all means, cut ties. See ya later Joe.
Perhaps Joe wanted ND to lower their football standards so that his son would keep his scholarship. Think about it! Nate Montana earned a ****ing one year scholarship to ND! Joe Montana is mad about that? He has had chances at ND and Montana and has sucked both places and left.
From Montana having to play for us to having EG, Hendrix, Kiel, and Zaire on the way! WOW! We've come a long way! Thank you BK!

Sorry I'm late to the party guys...just got home from work.
I had a nice little Facebook argument with an Irish "fan" earlier on this...
Montana can suck a big bag of d*cks.
This guy never says anything but derogatory garbage against our school, and I am honestly sick of hearing about it.
Dude isn't even the best QB of all time, there's a few I'd put ahead of him.

Not you, and by the way, where you been lately?

Back on the last page that all worked nicely. Golson would have been 6th per the numbers on the list, then Marty would have broken the record the next year. Which brings up another point. With high school lists, there is no compensation for irregular competition.

I have nerve/ joint damage in my right foot (sports related)... I have to wear shape ups as they allow me to walk without extreme crippling pain... idk why really and neither do my doctors but yeah, I know cool story bro… right??? Seriously, it is the only shoe I can wear anymore. I have close to ten pairs.

Anyway, Montana is fine, as of right now what he said has as much weight, or more, as anyone here until proven otherwise… which very well may happen.

If Kelly sticks with Golson and EG wins games… then pile on… as of now it seems there is as much sour grapes headed toward Joe as from him.

agreed....Joe is a legend. Joe is a quarterback who was Bill Walsh's no 1 student. He has a pretty high watermark for coaches and QBs. On its face his comments on Golson and Kelly are immediately credible. Time will tell if he traded his scrutinizing eye for a bitter red ***...

According to South Carolina publications the numbers ND listed, 11,634 yds and 151 TD, are correct.

Everett Golson commits to Notre Dame : Sports : CarolinaLive.com

Myrtle Beach takes on South Pointe in the 3A title game this Saturday at 6pm at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

Everett Golson Stats (*WITH ONE GAME REMAINING)

2007: 198 for 319, 62.1 % 2,765 yards, 35 TD, 11 INT

2008: 237 for 390, 60.8 % 3,570 yards, 44 TD, 10 INT

2009: 224 for 356, 62.9 % 3,529 yards, 47 TD, 3 INT

2010*: 90 for 133, 67.7 % *1,590 yards, *22 TD, *1 INT

Career: *11,454 passing yards *148 TD, *25 INT

The next Saturday after the article above in the SC Championship game against Jadeveon Clowney's South Pointe Stallions, Golson had a Joe Montana 4th quarter come from behind victory.

Heading into the final 12 minutes, the Stallions led the Myrtle Beach Seahawks, 23-14. They had held the Seahawks to 11 yards rushing and 99 yards passing when senior quarterback Everett Golson got rolling. He completed 9 of 12 passes for 81 yards, leading the Seahawks to a pair of touchdowns, the last a 20-yarder to Dallas Goodman with 6:48 left for a 27-23 victory

PASSING - Myrtle Beach: Golson 21-38-1, 180 yards AND 3 TDS

MB -- Jaquan Wilson 5 pass from Everett Golson
MB -- Wilson 28 pass from Everett Golson
MB -- Dallas Goodman 20 pass from Golson

COLUMBIA: South Pointe Stallions fall to Myrtle Beach Seahawks | High School Football | Rock Hill Herald Online

Doing the quick math, 11,454 passing yards + 180 = 11,634; 148 TD + 3 TD = 151

Which CONFIRMS the Notre Dame info in Golson's Bio.

BTW, Golson missed 8 games in his senior season due to injuries. He threw 25 TD passes in 6 games as a senior. Projecting his numbers for a full season and his numbers would have placed him in the Top 6 or 7 it Career Total Yds and #2 or #3 in Career TDs. His numbers are still impressive as he missed more than half a season. And they're more impressive than Joe's HS numbers.

Unlike so many here who have had brief encounters with Joe and found him less than they had expected, I have had a very diferent experience with Joe Montana.

I was in San Francisco in August of '89 and ran into Joe in the Pacific Heights district, walking with his two daughters. I told my wife that it was Joe and she wanted me to introduce myself, but I said no, didn't want to intrude. A few minutes later (having almost forgotten he was in the vicinity) HE approached me and said that my wife had spoken to him about me and he said how nice that was of her to do that for me and how he appreciated my respecting his privacy. I had a picture taken with Joe and his two girls. He talked to me about Notre Dame and his kids & wife, the weather, while the two girls finished their ice cream cones (about 4 minutes). I couldn't have been more impressed.

So I am definitely NOT among the people here who found Joe to be less than a gentleman.

But I don't agree with him about Golson. If the kid has an Achilles Heel, it isn't his passing arm. I am thinking he is going to play very well and lead the team to 9 wins...he has a winner's pedigree.

agreed....Joe is a legend. Joe is a quarterback who was Bill Walsh's no 1 student. He has a pretty high watermark for coaches and QBs. On its face his comments on Golson and Kelly are immediately credible. Time will tell if he traded his scrutinizing eye for a bitter red ***...

Joe was a legend in the NFL. He had a number of great comeback victories for ND both in relief and in games he started and played like crap for 3 or 3 -1/2 quarters. He was a career 52% passer in college, throwing 25 INTs and 25 TDs. He is not in the College HOF nor was he an All-American.

He's a bitter man. And he's already expressed it several times. This interview wasn't the first. I doubt Joe has seen Golson play and suspect he's commenting on Rees who he did see play.

He's probably still P.O'd that Rees, who has a much better TD:Int Ratio than Joe does, and Crist were both ranked ahead of Nate on the depth chart in '10. Nate transferred the following Feb. and his now at his 4 college (5 if you count two trips to ND) ND, Pasadena CC, ND, Montana, West Virginia Wesleyan. Nick's only in his second college.

Nate's stats:
Season Team Cmp Att Cmp% Yds TDs Int YPA
2009 Pasadena CC 31 88 35.2 324 2 5 3.7
2010 Notre Dame 9 18 50.0 116 0 1 6.4
2011 Montana 26 42 61.9 274 2 1 6.5

kmoose: not a good showing in this thread. You took this one on the chin.

I wouldn't say HE took it on the chin. The stats he relied on, and properly cited, for some reason don't include Golson.

Had anyone else taken the time to check a reference like he did, they would have reasonably come to the same conclusion. Moose did suggest a possible reason why they're not there.
