What is the "uniform surprise"?

Definitely agree.

I also agree with what Rocket has said - ND has altered the uniforms numerous times in their history. Can anyone here even remember them all?

The point is, like others have said - these are not for us. The players like them, and recruits like them. That is all that matters. Changing uniforms for one game does not undermine the values of Notre Dame, does not tarnish the brand of Notre Dame, nor does it undo the decades of prestigious history of Notre Dame.

You think that all that tradition, academic integrity, and values, those things that Kelly and others use to recruit athletes to ND, will all of a sudden be replaced by a uniform change? Seriously?!

Those things that make ND special aren't gone because of a uniform for one game. At all. It certainly gives us things to whine and complain about, but for the players, it gives them perhaps that little extra edge, that little bit of comfort, or even something to look forward to in the grind of a season. Not to mention it shows recruits that even a school like Notre Dame, WHO IS KNOWN FOR ITS TRADITION, can spice things up.

So, this school, known for its pure, upstanding, and great tradition, no longer has those things because of a uniform change for one game? The person who said it was strawman material was right.

The simple fact that a uniform change, whether you like the design or not, for ONE GAME ONLY, has so many in outrage, simply proves how solid the tradition at Notre Dame really is. If it wasn't, people wouldn't be up in arms about the change for one game, and really, it is thus impossible to undo all that history with a uniform for one game. ND could go out and play in leprechaun outfits for a game and it wouldn't undo the unbelievably strong traditional foundation for Notre Dame and its football program.

So, keep that in mind, and keep in mind what this does for current and prospective players, and I think everyone will survive the Miami game.

This, also, needs to be quoted and appreciated for the genius that it is.

Absolutely not. And I find it pretty troubling that you would even equate what I said to anything about military training. I have the utmost respect for soldiers of our military and I understand what they go through only because of three extremely close friends who are enlisted. I was merely pointing out that the only opinion(s) that really matter in this instance, the one about a one off ND jersey, is the people within the program, for obvious reasons which I alluded to. If I offended I apologize, and I wasn't looking for a pat on the back, only offering an example of what these guys go through based on my own experiences and why I feel that allows them this little piece of ND history that no one else will ever get.

I equated military training to your assertion that the only people who would understand the sacrifice that these kids make is someone who has done the same thing, even if at D-III. Many other people have had similar life experiences, which would allow them to understand perfectly what it is like to show up a month before school starts and get your d*ck hammered into the dirt like a bent nail every day. And to do it in extreme weather conditions, under tremendous amounts of stress. I would submit that the thousands of voices that support Notre Dame financially have opinions that matter. Perhaps not in the same percentage, but they DO matter. ND is a "brand", we all understand that. Well, those of us who buy tickets and/or merchandise, and support the "brand" financially, are the brand's customers. And your customers' opinions ALWAYS count.

I want to be clear, too, about one thing: I'm not complaining that they came up with a "one-off" uniform for the Shamrock Series. I'm saying that the helmet went too far. It looks comical, and makes a mockery of ND's tradition of marching to their own beat. It's nothing more than "keeping up with the Jonses". I'm not asking for anyone to get fired or anything. Don't lump me in with those who stroke out every time that there is any change. They could have left the "golden domes" alone, and this uniform would still be "hip".

I apologize if I came off as hostile. That wasn't my intention.

This thread has become stupid and pointless. As opposed to before this whole last uniform thing came up and this thread was stupid and pointless and a whole lot of fun. There were Wolf Tones, Black and Tans, @ssholes from Nike, discussions of Irish paint jobs for Harley's. All the good things in life.

And then you ruined it by a bunch of guys who claim they are brolic, but run around worrying about "swatches." Yes, effing "swatches!" Oh and pardon me the guys that were discussing how the crotch of their jeans fit, before Johnny, Sir D, and a couple of other of us ruined that conversation . . .

I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY WEAR AS LONG AS PART OF THE UNIFORM IS DIRT, SWEAT, AND BLOOD! (Preferably others.)

For one he HAS NEVER SEEN THE UNIS. He just sounds butt hurt that they didn't get to do this type of stuff when he was there. "We never got any big screens or anything there. " Samardzija said about the lack of a videoboard at Notre Dame Stadium. "They said it was all because of tradition. I don't see why they have to change now but hey, whatever."

Feldman from his mailbag. I had hoped people outside of ND had forgot about FreakBass by now...

Who at Notre Dame allowed those horrible uniforms for the Michigan game?

The same person who green-lighted the FreakBass fiasco? Seriously, I am not sure who ultimately was behind those things. It seems like whenever ND attempts to "get edgy," it backfires in a spectacularly comical way.

I did some surveying of Notre Dame fans in a bar in NYC on Friday and the reaction was not good. One fan lamented Notre Dame was "trying to be like everybody else, or be like Oregon." The point was valid. The same place that is so proud to talk about the spirit of retaining its independence and that unique quality you would think would hold true with things like this.

Got a couple random questions and this seemed like the best place to ask them so:

1. I know for many years QBs were only allowed to have single digit numbers. Was there any reason behind this and what year was the policy finally relaxed.

2. Has ND always allowed duplicate numbers? (ie Manti & Golson) I've only noticed this in recent years and didn't know if it was not allowed in past years or has just become more prevalent.

Tried to do a little research on my own but realized I had a wealth of knowledge right here. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

1. Not sure that was ever a rule at ND.

2. I'm sure they've always allowed it.

Incidentally, my works at the Alumni building, and while her work doesn't involve answering phones, she was told that there were TONS of calls complaining about the new unis. People be mad yo....

So any chance they are listening to the hate?

I've heard enough about the Miami game/Jerseys...what I really want to know is, what the hell are we wearing for the Meat-Chicken game!? Gotta be something different right, something never done before?! :)

I saw an interview with Joe Thiesmann who stated that he wanted to wear #10 but wasn't allowed to and thus chose #7.

I never noticed before that interview but all the major QBs from the 50's on had single digit numbers. Hornung #5, Huarte #7, Clements #2, Montana #3, Kiel #5, Rice #9. Kevin Mcdougal is the first one I can think of off the top of my head with double digits.(#15).

BGIF where are you?

I was not aware of a rule. It might have been more of a unwritten rule though that was organic and started in the 1950's.

Both Bertelli and Lujack wore 48 and 32 respectively.

That very well could of been the case. It just seemed kind of curious to me and I didn't know if someone on the forum would know for certain.

Thank you for the responses.

I dog the **** out of our new OG helmets.

Fo sho.

Kinda reminds me of the gold helmets from the 80s. The ones that would burst into gold dust if helmet to helmet occurred with some ferocity.

Yes many ND QB's have worn double digits. That is obvious thank you. If you had read my original post I asked if at one point QBs were prohibited from wearing double digits and the reasoning behind it. I asked this question because of a quote from Joe Theismann in an interview he gave.

Any useful insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully, Jimmy Dean will get in the middle of this with team labeling for sausage, chocolate chip pancake wraps, on a stick.
