So Miami is staying with tradition.
They could go out there in Jocks and bubblegum shells......Who gives a damn? Win the freaking game.
So Miami is staying with tradition.
Definitely agree.
I also agree with what Rocket has said - ND has altered the uniforms numerous times in their history. Can anyone here even remember them all?
The point is, like others have said - these are not for us. The players like them, and recruits like them. That is all that matters. Changing uniforms for one game does not undermine the values of Notre Dame, does not tarnish the brand of Notre Dame, nor does it undo the decades of prestigious history of Notre Dame.
You think that all that tradition, academic integrity, and values, those things that Kelly and others use to recruit athletes to ND, will all of a sudden be replaced by a uniform change? Seriously?!
Those things that make ND special aren't gone because of a uniform for one game. At all. It certainly gives us things to whine and complain about, but for the players, it gives them perhaps that little extra edge, that little bit of comfort, or even something to look forward to in the grind of a season. Not to mention it shows recruits that even a school like Notre Dame, WHO IS KNOWN FOR ITS TRADITION, can spice things up.
So, this school, known for its pure, upstanding, and great tradition, no longer has those things because of a uniform change for one game? The person who said it was strawman material was right.
The simple fact that a uniform change, whether you like the design or not, for ONE GAME ONLY, has so many in outrage, simply proves how solid the tradition at Notre Dame really is. If it wasn't, people wouldn't be up in arms about the change for one game, and really, it is thus impossible to undo all that history with a uniform for one game. ND could go out and play in leprechaun outfits for a game and it wouldn't undo the unbelievably strong traditional foundation for Notre Dame and its football program.
So, keep that in mind, and keep in mind what this does for current and prospective players, and I think everyone will survive the Miami game.
Absolutely not. And I find it pretty troubling that you would even equate what I said to anything about military training. I have the utmost respect for soldiers of our military and I understand what they go through only because of three extremely close friends who are enlisted. I was merely pointing out that the only opinion(s) that really matter in this instance, the one about a one off ND jersey, is the people within the program, for obvious reasons which I alluded to. If I offended I apologize, and I wasn't looking for a pat on the back, only offering an example of what these guys go through based on my own experiences and why I feel that allows them this little piece of ND history that no one else will ever get.
Samardzija, hmmm, must be another one of the over 70 crowd that never broke a sweat for ND, right?
Who at Notre Dame allowed those horrible uniforms for the Michigan game?
The same person who green-lighted the FreakBass fiasco? Seriously, I am not sure who ultimately was behind those things. It seems like whenever ND attempts to "get edgy," it backfires in a spectacularly comical way.
I did some surveying of Notre Dame fans in a bar in NYC on Friday and the reaction was not good. One fan lamented Notre Dame was "trying to be like everybody else, or be like Oregon." The point was valid. The same place that is so proud to talk about the spirit of retaining its independence and that unique quality you would think would hold true with things like this.
Incidentally, my works at the Alumni building, and while her work doesn't involve answering phones, she was told that there were TONS of calls complaining about the new unis. People be mad yo....

1. Not sure that was ever a rule at ND.
2. I'm sure they've always allowed it.
I saw an interview with Joe Thiesmann who stated that he wanted to wear #10 but wasn't allowed to and thus chose #7.
I never noticed before that interview but all the major QBs from the 50's on had single digit numbers. Hornung #5, Huarte #7, Clements #2, Montana #3, Kiel #5, Rice #9. Kevin Mcdougal is the first one I can think of off the top of my head with double digits.(#15).
BGIF where are you?
I equated military training to your assertion that the only people who would understand the sacrifice that these kids make is someone who has done the same thing, even if at D-III. Many other people have had similar life experiences, which would allow them to understand perfectly what it is like to show up a month before school starts and get your d*ck hammered into the dirt like a bent nail every day. And to do it in extreme weather conditions, under tremendous amounts of stress. I would submit that the thousands of voices that support Notre Dame financially have opinions that matter. Perhaps not in the same percentage, but they DO matter. ND is a "brand", we all understand that. Well, those of us who buy tickets and/or merchandise, and support the "brand" financially, are the brand's customers. And your customers' opinions ALWAYS count.
I want to be clear, too, about one thing: I'm not complaining that they came up with a "one-off" uniform for the Shamrock Series. I'm saying that the helmet went too far. It looks comical, and makes a mockery of ND's tradition of marching to their own beat. It's nothing more than "keeping up with the Jonses". I'm not asking for anyone to get fired or anything. Don't lump me in with those who stroke out every time that there is any change. They could have left the "golden domes" alone, and this uniform would still be "hip".
I apologize if I came off as hostile. That wasn't my intention.
I was not aware of a rule. It might have been more of a unwritten rule though that was organic and started in the 1950's.
Both Bertelli and Lujack wore 48 and 32 respectively.

Dayne Crist wore #10? Correct?
Rees #11, Crist #10, Quinn #10, Sharpley #13....
