I'm going to be at the Luers Dwenger scrimmage tomorrow evening to check out Jaylon live. Ill try and do an update after the scrimage with pics and whatnot. Should be great to finally see him in action in full pads.

I'm going to go to the Luers-South Side game. My buddies son is the starting SS for Ft. Wayne South. I don't think it'll be much of a game, but I will enjoy getting to watch Jaylon play.

Saw him at the mall today and everybody and I mean everybody gave him a double take when he walked by. The kid looks like he already plays major college football.

Jaylon was sporting his ND skull cap at their scrimmage tonight vs. Bishop Dwenger.

For anyone who cares, here's what I saw out of Jaylon tonight:
He's a monster against the pass. He is amazing in zone and man coverage (which we already know). When he gets his hands on a guy, no matter who they are they are not touching the football. Period.

Against the run, I have to say he is very disciplined. For being a top player in the country, you'd think he would try to make a play on every single down, but the way he plays is assignment football. Never once broke his assignment to make a play. Lots of trust in his teammates.

He definitely needs to put on weight and muscle. When someone blocks him it seems like a really good battle every time. He has some trouble getting off blocks and keeping his eyes on the ball carrier to make plays in the run game (usually he is double or triple teamed, though).

The biggest hit of the night came when he blew up an option play in the backfield. Most solid tackler I've ever seen in Fort Wayne.

Really, he looks like a safety right now. Shuts down an entire side of the field in coverage, moves extremely well in space. Has one of the quickest steps in football when it comes to blitzing, and is all over the place. Has a lot of work to do in his run defense and block shedding, but with size and proper coaching (which he doesn't get much of at Luers), he will easily improve there.

That's just my thoughts on his play tonight. I'll be at every one of his games this season (my lil bro plays with him) so I'll try to give updates whenever possible.

Great kid, and definitely looks like a stud who will compete very well at the next level.

I was there also tonight and I agree with everything he just said.

But I thought he did a decent job of closing the stretch play or outside run and squeezing it down and sliding off his block to tackle the runner. He did it once or twice and I was impressed how he slid off the block so easily while containing.

Was there too, and agree with pretty much everything. He did look a bit thin, but more than made up for it with his athleticism. He's got a great frame that will easily allow him to play in the 230-250 range when its all said and done. I can't be more excited for him to get to ND. Gonna be a great one.

Doesn't get good coaching at Luers?????? Yeah, I guess they would have like 12 state championships instead of 8 or 9 if their coaches were better!!! LOL.

dont get too worried about it FWIrish... Most of the people cracking jokes about it have no idea how good the coaches are in Fort Wayne or specifically Bishop Luers. One poster came on and made the comment, which I took as, "Luers doesnt have a BCS D1 football coach and staff helping him out everywhere he turns." Which I think is a fair statement; there are not many coaches of that caliber, even some that are in that position.

No worries Hoosier! I was just a bit stunned when I read that! Luers grad, class of 81, and know most of the coaches. Same guys for decades. I understand they don't walk on water but they do a great job in HS. Luers was good enough last year that they would have probably won class AAA and would have been 50/50 to win class AAAA. Not bad for a school with 500 kids.
I will go see them as often as possible. I am good friends with the founder of AWP where all of these guys work out. One hell of a facility. There will be more talant coming from the Fort as a result.

Highlights from Jaylon's first game of the season. FW Bishop Luers vs. FW Snider

Jaylon is #9 in the white but isn't seen very often in the highlights. Seems like he wasn't a major factor this game for the offense but I don't have the stats. Anyone up in the Indy/Fort Wayne area see this game in person?

Jaylon isn't used a ton on offense. Luers has a 3-4 back rotation and Jaylon is just part of that. He is mostly used on passing downs to protect the QB, but made a few nice plays running the ball.

His first run from scrimmage had him stiff arm a defender with a nasty stiff arm...he literally picked the boy up and tossed him! BEAST.

On defense, Jaylon probably had about 20 tackels. Snider ran the ball away from him most of the game, but he'd still find a way to get to the ball carrier and make a play. He had a few TFL, a HUGE qb hurry that forced a turnover with 2 min left in the game (the qb ended up on the ground....most likely shedding a tear after the hit, but did get the ball away prior to dying), he also had a MASSIVE hit on a punt return that had the crowd jump to their feet and let out a big "OOOOOO!!!!"

Unfortunately every time Jaylon blitzed (which wasn't much) he was held by one or two linemen...im talking bear hugs. It never drew a flag either. He looks like an animal when he blitzes...quick and powerful. I remember one play where he was blitzing and had two snider linemen (who were probably 240 lbs) hanging onto his back as he drug them towards the QB. Hes a very talented blitzer.

Again, his biggest strength is pass coverage. He eliminates anyone on his side of the field. Looks like an experienced D1 safety.

Also, his weakness would be getting of blocks when containing the run. Too many times last night I saw him in containment and an offensive lineman just run him out of the play completely. Now, to be fair he doesn't receive much technical coaching on things like this right now, so he relies on his personal athleticism. A few months with Longo and a week with Diaco will have that "issue" fixed (and it's not a huge issue...it's just the only weakness I can find in his game right now. Trust me I had to look very hard to find a weakness).

He's a great athlete, they just got out-coached last night and couldn't pull out a win. I highly doubt Luers loses another game this season and I'm very certain I'll have some badass highlights to share in the coming weeks...Jaylon is poised to have a great senior season full of huge plays!
