3. Sheldon Day is a MAN CHILD!
The coaches knew they had scored when they landed Day!
They just didn't think he'd be what he looks like he
can be!....
DOMINANT!
Joe Bowman is a friend of mine and a scout, also a
Michigan fan...durning the whole Tommy Schutt
situation I know there were a lot of idiots bitch#ng about
ND passing on Schutt...then UM passed on Schutt...
Bowman told me.."I'd jump over Schutt to get Day!"
Seems like Bowman knows his stuff!

Told you all!

I posted this here because this was originally about a "damefan blog" post, and I wanted to see what you guys thought about damefan post that TP linked on facebook tonight. The full post is here (and most of it is good stuff, FWIW, and I'd recommend checking it out).

But one thing in the "Anonymous and Unfiltered" part (which is supposedly e-mails with anonymous 2013 recruits) stood out to me:

I'm on record as believing that ND can win 9 or 10 games, but I don't necessarily want to bet the recruiting class on it. If that is the expectation that the coaches are selling, I'll also take that as a good sign, I guess. But this class has seemed unbelievably solid to me, and I'd hate to think it could or would fall apart if ND "only" wins eight (or even seven) games considering the schedule we're playing and the expectations that a lot of people seem to have.

I've been thinking the same thing since the disappointments on national signing day. I don't know if ND needs to win 10 games. But I think beating either Miami, Oklahoma or SC will be key to holding on to the recruits in the current class. Also a bowl win can go a long way as far as recruiting is concerned. 2010 was a great example, beating SC and then Miami was the major factor in securing Lynch, Tuitt and Ishaq. Then last year disappointing losses to SC and FSU and you have committed recruits looking elsewhere. If ND doesn't beat any of the 3 teams I mentioned then a bowl win becomes a must.

I don't know about beating SC or Oklahoma on the road. They're both potential top-5 teams. Beating Miami is a different story, though. They should be pretty horrible. When I look at the schedule, there aren't 4 or 5 games I look at and worry, but I do worry that during such a grinding season you could take a loss or two you don't see coming. I do agree that the bowl game gives good momentum going into NSD, but the Irish bowl situation is a little precarious. If they aren't in a BCS bowl I wonder where/who they will play.

I just hope that we aren't setting ourselves for something here by telling these kids to expect 10 wins. I hope for 10 wins. I think 10 wins are possible, but I don't want to bet the recruiting class on 10 wins. The schedule is tough and the QB situation is still fluid. This team has a lot of upside, but a lot of questions. I think some of the building blocks for 10, 11 even 12 win teams could be on the field this year, but its hard to expect it all to come together over night.

Spoon feed them pudding and tell them everything's going to be fine. This is football..... Jesus. Are we at a point that we have to guarantee kids win totals in order for them to be interested? Yes, it's better to win games. Either you've bought in or not. End of story.

Just to clarify, this is basically my point. I hope we're not guaranteeing win totals. On the other hand, if we're not, I like the enthusiasm on the recruit's (Devin's?) part.

8 wins is what Kelly has really sett the bar at publicly for this season. It's hard to imagine more than 9 without teams on our schedule being signifcantly worse than expected.

And that's a realistic goal. The majority here from what I have seen is predicting 8 wins, though some are starting to drink the Kool-aid but we are just a little over a month out so that's to be expected. What I would like to see is a ninth win with it comming in the bowl game vs a quality team to bring some momentum into 2013 with this class intact along with a few more studs sprinkled in there. I am optimistic though that we can be better than 8 wins but we just really won't know what we have until one of these QB's takes the bull by the horns.

Kelly's exact quote runs: "If we win 8 or more this year it will be the first time Notre Dame has done that in...X... years". There isn't even a promise in that statement. Kelly, the forward looking system manager that he is [and is a genius at] is seeding the consciousnesses of everyone for the strenuous road that is 2012. He, like all good "politicians", is talking to the middle ground of Notre Dame fans, whom along with the rational ones he hopes constitute the majority --- or at least the majority of those who will matter.

Kelly and the staff, in my rather assured opinion, will NEVER do anything as stupid as "promise" or even allude to a certain number of wins this season. They will "sell" Notre Dame on Notre Dame as a whole picture, and not engage in some shallow message. Others, like we on IE, will debate what is or is not "acceptable" as to wins, but the staff won't, especially with recruits. That is beyond useless trekking strongly into suicidal.
