He had us #6 last year....

Bill Connolly also had ND ranked highly last year as well. Highly credible guys.

Apparently both thought a 5 Star Senior QB would take charge and use his superior athletic talents to ND's benefit. Neither forecast the lucky bounce fumbles that factored into 3 games. Shame on them for that.

Wisconsin

Wilson's gone both Steele thinks there are enough returning weapons to get Wisconsin back to Big 10 Title Game.

Schedule looks similar to last year. Easy 4 opening games followed by tolerable B10 foes. The competition will be @ The Huskers, PS# 17, on 9/29 in Game 5, MSU, PS #19, a MONTH later on 10/27, then OSU, PS # 11, 3weeks after that. Both MSU and OSU travel to Madison.

UGA a legitimate Nat'l Title contender

Interesting comment as I thought Steele's choice to win the SEC East was UF. Perhaps I misread the UF writeup. As loudly as the SEC beats their own drum, I don't see how UGA could be a Nat'l Contender without winning the SEC East which would preclude them from the SEC Title Game which was designed specifically to boost an SEC team into the Nat'l Title Game. Especially since they don't face the LSU, ALA, or ARK during the season.

UGA would be an example of the SEC's desire for multiple SEC teams in a playoff. Say UGA runs the table EXCEPT for UF which wins the SEC East. UF then beat a 12-0 LSU or ALA in the SEC TG. You'd have a 11-1 UGA, 11-1 LSU and/or ALA, and a 13-0 or 12-1 UF. Slive and Company gonna really be P.Od if UF runs the table EXCEPT for FSU and then wins the SEC TG (but I digress).

They return 16 Starters (7/9).

QB - "Murray should be one of the top QB's in the entire country.
RB - "deeper and more experienced"
WR/TE - "This group is more exp'd. "(than LY's)
OLine - "I felt the L2Y's units underachieved and TY's could match their production"
DLine - "proj st'rs are all PS#24 or better and
this is one of the best D-lines in the country"
LBs - "one of, if not the best, LB corps in the nation."
DBs - "this unit is even stronger"
STs - "UGA plummeted to #81 and TY lose their K/P combo plus their top RM and could drop even further"

Another SEC schedule set up for a Title Run with 8 home games, a neutral site game and only 5 teams ranked in Steele's TOP #40. Only 2 of those ranked teams are in back to back games, Tennesse in Athens and SCA in Columbia.

A requirement of the new playoff system should be that you cannot schedule an FCS team. All games on your schedule must be FBS teams.

HEAR! HEAR!

I said this at a recent family (Mrs BGIF's) dinner and you would have though I burned a Confederate Flag. "But we play such a rugged SEC schedule. It wouldn't be fair if we didn't have a breather," cried the Alabama and Auburn grads. I simply noted, "If you don't want to run with the Big Dawgs, don't get off the porch". They tucked their tails in silence.

Phil Steele #7 Texas

Phil Steele #7 Texas

Texas is my #1 Surprise Team (a non Top 10 team that can win
a National Title) thanks to the B12's best D.

15 Starters Return (9/6)

QB - "Texas will still have their best QB play s/'09."
RB - "This is one of the nation's best RB corps."
WR/TE - "much more exp'd in the 2nd yr of OC Bryan Harsin's offense."
OLine - "their most veteran OL in 3 yrs"
DLine - "their most veteran OL in 3 yrs"
LBs - "While this unitis loaded with VHT's, they are less experienced."
DBs - "With 3 st'rs back ... and 10 VHT's, UT will contend for my #1 pass D this year."
STs - Loss K and P. "They will drop some."

Horns will face 5 teams in Steel's Top 40 but only 2 are ranked 12th or tougher. After a walk through in Sept WYO, NM, MIS, and a BYE, they face OKS, WVU, and OU back to back to back. A tough run but then the only team of note they face is TT. They should be favored in all games except OU.

Last year they opened 4-0 then lost back to back to OU and OKS. They beat KU and TT but got upset at Mizzou and lost at home the next week to KSU. They had a 2 pt win over A&M and they got beaten solidly by BU.

'12 Schedule

Phil Steele #6 Oregon

Phil Steele #6 Oregon

They will be 8-0 on Nov 3rd for their showdown with the Trojans and that game will determine if they are a legitimate Nat'l Title contender

Return 11 Starters (5/6)

QB - "1st yr st'r"
RB - "remains one of the premier RB units in college football"
WR/TE - "I will call
it their most athletic receiving corps in a few years."
OLine - "While I cannot reasonably expect much improvement over LY's numbers, this is a more exp'd unit."
DLine - "the Ducks' best D-line in a few years"
LBs - "Four of the top 6 are back and while I like all 3 proj st'rs, they have 3 VHT bkps who could win jobs."
DBs - "Once again they return 2.5 st'rs ... and this unit looks just as strong."
STs - "should match LY's #7 ranking."

Last yr they opened with a loss to LSU this year they open with Arkansas ... STATE, not the Hawgs. That should result in a Line Swing of about 50 points and at eliminate a immediate 7 slot drop in the polls. They continue to warm up against Fresno the following week then face Tennessee ... TECH, not the Vols from Knoxville but the Div AA Golden Eagles from Cookeville. (Weak OOC slate) First 8 games shouldn't be a contest. Then the showdown at Kiffin's Koliseum. After that Cal and then what appears to be the only other Steele Top 40 Team, #18 Stanford in Eugene. They close with the Civil War.

'12 Schedule

The page is gone but they're a contender despite all their personnel losses to the NFL.

Formidable schedule starting with the Wolverines at Cowboy Stadium. Then a breather against WKU before the their SEC Opener at ARK. Three easy games over the next four weeks before a run against 4 Steele Top 40 SEC teams. LSU is the only one that should be a tussle. Then they get healthy against a Div AA team before they play Auburn. 7 homes games, 4 on the road, 1 neutral site.

With Jones turning down a shot at the NFL, they have 15 ret sts and 8 of my 9 sets of power ratings call for a 12-0 season!

15 Returning Starters (8/7)

QB - "Jones should have his best year as a senior."
RB - "I look for improved production from the OU RB's"
WR/TE - Broyles is gone BUT "They do add in PS#4 Trey Metoyer (star of spg) as well as PS#9, #19 and #21 true frosh and a PS#8JC."
OLine - With 102 car sts returning, this should be OU's best O-line s/'08 ."
DLine - "TY they lose Big 12 co-Def POY Alexander and Lewis but should continue to improve their rush D."
LBs - "Despite being a little less exp'd and losing their top guy, this unit looks stronger and is loaded with 9 VHT's"
DBs - "... the unit ('11) finished #8 in my PDR (54.2%, 18-15) and TY have their most exp in yrs and Mike Stoops back as a mentor.
STs - "OU finished #16 and have almost everyone back."

One of the tougher '12 Schedules with 6 PS Top 40 Teams. OU has BYES in the 3rd and 5th weeks which isn't smart scheduling. Five of the tougher teams are in the final 9 weeks with no week off. ND gets OU in South Bend two weeks after OU places UTx. OU closes out the season with PS #25 WVU, PS #12 OKS, and PSU #36 TCU.

'12 Schedule
Sep. 1 at UTEP
Sep. 8 Florida A&M
Sep. 15
Sep. 22 Kansas St PS #37
Sep. 29
Oct. 6 at Texas Tech
Oct. 13 † Texas (Dallas) PS #7
Oct. 20 Kansas
Oct. 27 Notre Dame PS #21
Nov. 3 at Iowa St
Nov. 10 Baylor
Nov. 17 at West Virginia PS #25
Nov. 24 Oklahoma St PS #12
Dec. 1 TCU PS #36

I know FSU will have a great defense, they are just so athletic. Now let's talk about the most important position though, QB. Who is that gonna be?

I had to look it up, I didn't think Manuel was back. I still don't think that he will be enough. Someone like Wake Forest or NC State will pull off the upset on them like every other year.

Steele's #1 article is up yet on his site as of this posting, I just checked. I listed them at #1by process of elimination, as they appear to be the only one missing from the Top 40.

Details when his site gets to it.

You guys didn't pre-order the magazine?

C'mon!!

And miss the suspense?

Besides grif says it's not a good magazine because Steele picked ND to be a contender for 20 years and they didn't do it.

PS #1 FSU

PS #1 FSU

I went against the grain picking the tm with the best D in the country (Alabama) to win the Nat'l Title and the Tide delivered. TY FSU has the best D in the country and all 9 sets of my power ratings are calling for a perfect 12-0 season.

17 Starters Return (8/9)

QB - "Manuel enters the year with 121 consec passes without an int (none in L/5 gms) while Trickett now has experience and I look for good sized improvement from the FSU QB's"
RB - "I expect more production out of Freeman, Thompson and Wilder plus they add in PS#6 Mario Pender (IFS) making this a much improved group"
WR/TE - "the top 4 from LY are back, Haulstead returns and they add in 6'6" 242 rFr Kelvin Benjamin (PS#17) making this a deep, talented (10 VHT's) and exp'd group"
OLine - "While the unit drops to 50 car sts ret, I would expect better health and improved numbers and they add in PS#11 & 30 JUCO's. They also get to face the best D-line in the country every day in practice."
DLine - "TY the unit returns intact including their top 3 DE's (20.5 sk in '11) and they add in a PS#1, PS#3 and PS#12 DL's. This is the best D-line in the country."
LB - "... have 4 of their top 6 back making it their most exp'd LB corps in years"
DB - "Despite being slightly less experienced, I'll call for continued improvement this year."
ST - LY's #1 ST Team. "This year they lose their outstanding P but will once again be among the elite."

SCHEDULE - 12 games but only 10 Div 1 opponents, only 4 ranked teams, only 2 tough games in succession. They open with Murray St and Savannah St. Yawn. Then they warm up at Div 1 level with WF before facing a ranked opponent, Clemson in Doak Walker. Another ranked opponent in USF (away) the following week. Then downhill through NCS, BC, MIA, and Duke. They have a BYE to prepare for VT. Then Maryland before the final game at home against the Gators.

'12 Schedule
Sep. 1 Murray St DIV AA
Sep. 8 Savannah St DIVAA
Sep. 15 Wake Forest
Sep. 22 Clemson PS #14
Sep. 29 at USF PS #20
Oct. 6 at NC State
Oct. 13 Boston College
Oct. 20 at Miami, Fl
Oct. 27 Duke (HC)
Nov. 3 BYE
Nov. 8 at Virginia Tech (Thur) PS #24

Per Steele:

Manuel was the clear-cut starter in '11 but was inj'd in the 3Q vs Okla and rFr Clint Trickett (PS#60, OL cch's son) impressed with a 56 yd td pass on 3&28 to tie it at 13 (FSU lost by 10). Trickett started vs Clemson (336, 3 td) but after a fumble and 2 int in the 1H vs WF, Manuel came in and almost led the comeback (286 yd, 2-2). In 9 games Trickett threw for 675 (61.1%, 7-4) while Manuel threw for 2,666 (65.3%, 18-8). Manuel enters the year with 121 consec passes without an int (none in L/5 gms) while Trickett now has experience and I look for good sized improvement from the FSU QB's.

Even Gene told me there's no way in hell this happens.

They couldn't ask for a better schedule. They'll start out in the Top 10. Murray St (Sagarin's #152 LY) and Savannah St (Sagarin 241 out of 246) will both be 77-0 games. NO #1 OU on the schedule to derail the team (first of three straight losses). WF an upset winner last year and Sagarin's 152 ranked team will be lucky to score.

While many teams will have a laundry list of injured and walking wounded from playing 3 week's of Div 1 football, FSU will have a fresh and rested team to face Clemson. They have to maintain focus the next week against USF. In the nex 4 weeks only MIA should give them a game. Then 2 weeks to prepare for VT. Maryland (zzzzz). They play the Gators who wrapped up the SEC East and are focused on the SEC Championship Game. IF UF loses to FSU and then knocks off ALA or LSU in Atlanta (THE SEC Nightmare). Meanwhile the ACC Championshiop game would be a Noles/VT rematch. The Noles might get a bye for the NC Game.

Strength of Schedule will only hurt FSU if they're #3. The Coaches aren't going to be hypocrites and mark down FSU for playing AA teams and the computers still count AA wins as good as any Div 1 win.

Two DIV1AA teams? Seriously? Hopefully they don't go 6-6 or 7-5, otherwise they might miss a bowl game. Thats freaking disgusting. Didn't Emmanuel toss a couple INTs against us in the bowl game? I just don't think he is good enough to QB a top team.

Since their D seems to be on the "elite" list, I guess it won't matter, IF they have a running game.

He's entering his 3rd season as a starter that's when the marked improvement in TD/INT Ratio is supposed to take place ala Quinn and Clausen. I suspect that's what Steele is banking on.

Also unlike our defense, their defense makes INTs. They gained 9 more tournovers than ND last year.

Teams playing any lower divison should be bowl ineligible, period.
