SEATTLE - Derek Jeter has never been one to revel in his personal accomplishments, always choosing to focus on the Yankees' success instead of his own.

The Yankees didn't have much to celebrate following Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Mariners, but Jeter took another step toward the Hall of Fame by ascending to the top of the all-time hits list for shortstops.

Jeter collected hits in his first two at-bats to tie and pass Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio for first place on that list. Jeter went 3-for-4 to push his hit total to 2,675 as a shortstop and 2,688 overall.

Ripken spent time at third and SS in '81, '82, '96, and '97. He was at third base full time in '98 and '99 and was third base and DH in '00 and '01.

I should have known better. I should have known that you would have numbers. It just threw me, when you said that Jeter was the all-time leader in hits for a SS, and then I remembered reading that he was behind Ripken, who was also a SS.

Honus Wagner was also a SS but also played 3rd, 1st, and the outfield, I believe.

I was surprised that Aparcio was the leader until Jeter passed him. I would have thought that Aparcio and Fox were the All-Time Lowest Hitting Keystone Combination.

He was looking like his career was over when he injured the calf. Since he's returned he's hitting better than .330 and has raised his BA to .290. In his last 6 games, he's 15 for 27, .556!

He's now 8 hits behind Carew, 10 behind Henderson, and 15 behind Biggio. 16 hits will move him to 20th place. It would take another 50 hits to pass Winfield. He'd need to play every day and stay at that .330 pace to make it so this season. A longshot with 41 games remaining.
