10 days, left groin injury.

Romaine now primary catcher, hitting .244, 15 points higher than Sanchez but without the 24 homers.

Higashioka has been called up from Scranton.

AKA...Gary sit your slumping ass down without giving up a roster spot.

Morton won his 12th while Price took the loss. TB 3 Bo's 2. Each team managed only 5 hits.

Sox protested a TB substitution. TB's Kolorek was on the mound in relief and another relief pitcher was brought. Rather than leaving the game Kolorek moved to 1st base and took over the DH slot in the batting order. The replacement reliever pitched to one batter than was replaced by Kolorek on the mound. Kolorek finished the inning and was removed foe a pinch hitter in the Rays next turn at bat. A different pitcher finished the game for the Rays.

When Kolorek was moved around, the umpires took 20 minutes to sort out the lineup card. That included a call to headquarters to confirm they had the right ruling.

Boston protested the game for an illegal substitution.

Rays avoid a sweep. Rays 9.5 behind NY, BoSox 10.5

I'm just happy we won a series. Maybe we'll string a few of those together.

Savages Outclub The Twins 10-7

15 hits, 9 for extra bases. Four double, two triples, and four HRs. The Twins Odorizzi gave up 9 runs and didn't answer the bell for the 5th inning. Happ gave up 6 runs and couldn't make it through the 4th. Both bullpens allowed only 1 run over the last 5 innings.

Every NY starter had a hit, 5 had multiple hits. Gregorius had 3 to go with 5 yesterday and he had 3 RBIs to go with the 7 yesterday. NY now has 5 starters hitting .293 or better.

Yanks head to Boston.

Troy Tulowitzki announces retirement after 13 seasons in MLB: 'It has been an absolute honor'
Tulowitzki was once considered one of the best shortstops in the game
Katherine Acquavella

On Thursday, Troy Tulowitzki announced his retirement from baseball. Tulowitzki, 34, signed with the Yankees this past offseason after being released by the Blue Jays. With the Yankees, Tulowitzki played in five games to start the season at shortstop, but he then went on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain. The Yankees transferred Tulowitzki to the 60-day disabled list on June 7.

A five-time All-Star, Tulowitzki spent parts of 10 years with the Rockies and parts of three with the Blue Jays before injuries derailed his career. Tulowitzki missed all of 2018 after having surgery to remove bone spurs from both his heels. He also suffered an ankle injury in 2017, playing only 66 games that season with Toronto. He played more than 130 games just three times over his 13 seasons.

Here's part of Tulowitzki's retirement statement:

"For as long as I can remember, my dream was to compete at the highest level as a Major League Baseball Player … to wear a big league uniform and play hard for my teammates and the fans. I will forever be grateful for every day that I've had to live out my dream. It has been an absolute honor.

"I will always look back with tremendous gratitude for having the privilege of playing as long as I did. There is no way to truly express my gratitude to the fans of Colorado, Toronto and New York. They always made my family and I feel so welcome.

"I want to thank the Yankees organization and Brian Cashman for giving me the opportunity to wear the Yankees uniform and live out another childhood dream. I wish that my health had allowed for a different ending to that chapter.

"While this chapter is now over, I look forward to continuing my involvement in the game that I love … instructing and helping young players to achieve their goals and dreams.

"I'm saying goodbye to Major League Baseball, but I will never say goodbye 2 the game I love. Thanks again 2 all of you!"

Colorado drafted Tulowitzki as the 7th overall pick of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Long Beach State. Although Tulowitzki grew up on the west coast, he often cited longtime Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter as his favorite player growing up. His jersey number with the Rockies and Blue Jays was No. 2 because of Jeter.

It's not hyperbole to say that if Tulowitzki had not been forced to fight against injuries, he could have garnered a career worthy of consideration for the Hall of Fame.

Jon Morosi

@jonmorosi
Troy Tulowitzki‘s adjusted OPS — which takes Coors into consideration — was higher than that of Jeter, Yount and Ripken. Yet, he played in less than half the games they did. Tulo had the talent of an all-time great, just not the durability. @MLBNetwork

His time in Colorado certainly won't ever be forgotten by Rockies fans. Tulowitzki's emergence as one of the best shortstops in the game was a big reason for the team's surprise NL pennant in 2007. Tulowitzki secured the final out in game four, with his signature jump throw to first base.

The rotation has gone from a slight concern to obviously not good enough in the last week. I mean that only in terms of winning overall. The batting would still be good enough to carry them to the post season. Maybe they are happy enough with that.

Tanaka gave up 12. Tarpley 4.

Perhaps Yankee pitchers need to spend some time behind the plate to get some perspective.

MLB rumors: Giants likely to keep Madison Bumgarner, could become buyers at trade deadline
Bumgarner is one of the best available starters on the market
Katherine Acquavella 5 hrs ago

In the days leading up to the MLB trade deadline, the San Francisco Giants recent success has complicated the club's deadline decision of whether the team will buy or sell. San Francisco has managed to climb from last place to second place in the National League West, and, entering Thursday, the team is within three games of the NL's second wild-card spot.

More recently, there have been recurring rumors of the Giants plans to hold onto their ace Madison Bumgarner, rather than trade the three-time World Series champion.

On Thursday, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand added another report to the belief that Bumgarner will still be with San Francisco after July 31. Here's more from Feinsand:

According to a source with knowledge of the team's plans, the Giants are poised to become buyers if they're still in the thick of the National League Wild Card race come Monday, and it's all but certain ace lefty Madison Bumgarner will not be traded, regardless of how the weekend goes.

Bumgarner is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season, and although he once seemed like a lock to be dealt prior to Wednesday's Deadline, the Giants' current plan is to hang on to the popular pitcher, the source said.

CBS Sports ranked Bumgarner, 29, as the fourth-best trade candidate in this year's market. In his most recent start against the Cubs on Tuesday, Bumgarner threw seven innings where he gave up three earned runs while striking out seven.

MLB trade deadline rumors: Mets could extend Zack Wheeler if they trade Noah Syndergaard; Giants likely keeping Bumgarner
Here are all the latest rumors leading up to MLB's trade deadline
Katherine Acquavella 5 hrs ago

We are six days away from the trade deadline and there really hasn't been a flurry of activity yet. Instead, a majority of the league remains within a hot streak of contention and the worry that there won't be enough sellers to make for a big trade deadline remains a legitimate concern. There are also more than enough teams who could go on a losing streak and become sellers before next Wednesday. A red-hot trade deadline still remains possible.

We'll be here each day to roundup the latest on the rumor mill. We also took a look at the 50 best trade candidates, including the top 10 pitchers and top 10 hitters on the market. If you're interested in which prospects could be switching systems before July 31, we have you covered:

Where will some of the biggest names on the trading block end up? Our experts at Sportsline have the odds on who Noah Syndergaard, Trevor Bauer and more will be playing for on Aug. 1.

Here are the latest trade rumors as the July 31 deadline approaches:

Asking prices for Syndergaard and Bauer remain high
Noah Syndergaard NYM • SP • 34

Trevor Bauer CLE • SP • 47

WHIP 1.16
IP 152.1
BB 59
K 179

New York Post's Joel Sherman reports that the prices for right-handed starters Noah Syndergaard and Trevor Bauer are still high, as the Mets and Indians try to figure out how much they can squeeze out of contending teams in need of starting pitching. More from Sherman:

The wild cards in the starting pitching market are Noah Syndergaard and Trevor Bauer. The Mets and Indians have set high prices on the talented righties and are gauging how much they could extract in a starting-pitcher-hungry market.

Outside executives believe the Indians are more likely to trade than the Mets are. The presence of Bauer and Syndergaard would deepen the quality and quantity of the starting pitching market because a strong argument could be made that pair has the best stuff of any potentially available starters — and acquiring teams value stuff for the playoffs perhaps above all other attributes.

According to Sherman, the Indians would be able to make a deal with the Yankees for Bauer (citing the 2016 deadline trade with Andrew Miller), and notes that Bauer is New York's top choice in the market, but that they face competition from the Astros, Phillies and others.

Sherman also notes that there is a "strong belief" that the Mets will not complete a deal of this magnitude with the Yankees, and that the Astros and Padres are among the interested teams in Snydergaard. Sources have confirmed to CBS Sports's R.J. Anderson the Mets are listening to offers for Syndergaard, as well as reliever Edwin Diaz.

Bauer, 28, will be a free agent after next season while Syndergaard, 26, is not a free agent until after the 2021 season.

Possible Mets plan for Syndergaard and Wheeler
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets are exploring the possibility of trading Noah Syndergaard while signing Zack Wheeler to an extension. As Rosenthal notes, the Mets could benefit from the return they receive for Syndergaard while also hanging onto Wheeler, who is set to depart in free agency after this season.

Syndergaard is still under contract through 2021 and would likely net some valuable prospects in a trade. Wheeler, however, saw his trade value drop after heading to the injured list with shoulder fatigue. He's set to make one start (Friday vs. Pirates) before July 31.

Giants likely to keep Bumgarner
It once seemed like a guarantee that Madison Bumgarner would be changing teams during the 2019 season, but a recent surge by the Giants has the team reconsidering deadline plans. San Francisco is now "all but certain" to hang on to Bumgarner -- a free agent after the season -- for the rest of 2019, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. We have more on the Giants' plans here.

The Royals have received interest from the Cubs, Braves and Phillies regarding Whit Merrifield, their dynamic utility man. But MLB.com's Jon Morosi reports that the Royals are informing clubs that they will keep Merrifield beyond next week's trade deadline. Here's more from Morosi:

Merrifield's initial price tag was set extraordinarily high. The Royals would've had to receive the type of Major League talent that contenders wouldn't give up during the middle of the season.

The Royals have no contractual incentive to move Merrifield, who is under team control through 2023, and the team's front office values him highly as an organizational tone-setter, on and off the field.

While Kansas City isn't shopping Merrifield, Morosi notes that there are talking with teams about a deal for left-handed reliever Jake Diekman. Diekman is getting paid $2.25 million this year on a contract that includes a mutual option for 2020. Morosi is reporting that the Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers, Nationals and Braves are among the teams with varying levels of interest in Diekman.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant left Wednesday's game with right knee soreness. Bryant, 27, appears to be day-to-day for now. He will have Thursday's scheduled off day to help aid in his recovery heading into the weekend series versus the Brewers. According to MLB's Jon Morosi, the Cubs' interest in Eric Sogard and Nicholas Castellanos as trade deadline gets has heightened due to Bryant's knee issue. Sogard has had limited playing time at third base this season, while the last time Castellanos saw time at the hot corner was back in 2017.

The Dodgers traded for Astros first baseman Tyler White, who was designated for assignment by Houston just a few days ago. Here's more on the trade details.

Yankees add to catcher depth in trade with Twins
With Yankees starting catcher Gary Sanchez on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 groin strain, New York addressed its thinning depth at the catcher position via a trade with the Twins. On Thursday, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees acquired catcher Brain Navarreto from Minnesota, but it was not reported what the Yankees sent the Twins in return. Navarreto, 24, was playing at Double-A for the Twins prior to the trade. He was hitting .177 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 40 games.

In response to Sanchez's second-half injury, the Yankees promoted Kyle Higashioka from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and named Austin Romine as the team's starting catcher in the meantime. The trade comes just after the Yankees took two out of three games from the first-place Twins, including Tuesday's wild game between the two contenders.

In this pitching-hungry market, Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman has been one of the names consistently mentioned in trade rumors. Stroman, 28, is cost-controlled through 2020. He's making $7.4 million this season and has one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining.

On Wednesday, Stroman may have made his final start with the Blue Jays, a team he's been with since they drafted him in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. The right-hander gave up one run on five hits with one walk with six strikeouts in seven innings, dropping his ERA for the season to 2.96. Here's what Stroman told MLB.com's Alexis Brudnicki postgame:

"I realized that it could have possibly been my last home start, so definitely wanted to show the crowd some love," Stroman said. "Because the last seven years that I've been a Blue Jay, it's been unbelievable.

"I said, 'This is my house,' because it is. I just thought it could be my last outing here. I've always been emotional. I feel like I've had a pretty good tenure as a Blue Jay. Hopefully, this will be my third [season] throwing 200 innings or more."

On Wednesday, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported that the Braves are an "obvious suitor" for Stroman, and Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos was with the Blue Jays when Stroman came up.

The Yankees just had their worst turn through the rotation in 74 years

By KRISTIE ACKERT
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
JUL 26, 2019 | 10:25 AM

BOSTON — So much for burying the Red Sox. In the hours after the Red Sox smacked the Yankees 19-3 at Fenway, the Bombers’ focus turned back to themselves.
The starting pitching has been brutal for five straight games now, and time is running to improve it, with the MLB trade deadline next Wednesday, July 31. The Yankees’ five starters had a disastrous turn through the rotation, allowing a combined 40 runs in just 17.2 innings pitched. According to YES, the last time that the Yankees had starters allow six or more runs in five consecutive games was in August of 1945.

When Masahiro Tanaka got chased in the first inning of his last start against the Red Sox, it was chalked up to the weird conditions at London Stadium. Now, after two straight starts where the Red Sox pounded him, there is plenty to dissect.

And why did Aaron Boone wait until the game was out of hand before he pulled Tanaka? It was reminiscent of Tuesday night in Minnesota, when he waited one batter too long to get Domingo German out of trouble.

The Yankees’ clubhouse was sober and quiet on Thursday night after the 19-3 drubbing. There were plenty of things to think about. But there was also stuff to just forget.

“It’s going to happen,” Luke Voit said. “We did get our ass kicked tonight, but we had a tough road trip yesterday. We got in at 5:30 [this morning], not to make excuses, but it just sucks. It was not our night tonight, but we’ve still got three more against them.
“We hope to win those next three games.”
As Voit said, it was a ass-kicking Thursday night, but the Yankees still hold a 10-game lead over the Red Sox. They’re 9.5 games ahead of the Rays for the American League East division lead. And they’re 6-2 against the Red Sox so far this season.

There is no reason to panic.
“I’m not concerned at all,” Voit said of the struggling rotation. “Sometimes guys don’t have their stuff. They have a good lineup too. You have to give them credit. I trust Masa and J.A. and Domingo, the guys in our rotation. They’ve been doing great for us this year, but they’re not going to be perfect sometimes ... It’s a tough game. You’ve got to get out of your head sometimes, play the game and take the positives out of it.” And while the Yankees had hoped to put the Red Sox away this month, Voit said they’ll just enjoy the competition. The Yankees have three more at Fenway this weekend and then four against the Red Sox in the Bronx next weekend.
“It’s our rival. These games are huge for us. It’s unbelievable these are our first time here but it was a great atmosphere tonight,” Voit said. “We expect our fans to come out and support us, and get back after it to play our baseball and bring more energy.”

Mookie - 3 for 3, 3 yams.

interesting note, if y'all are interested, last night set the record with 3 consecutive 3 HR games...I think it was Cruz this time. Mookie's performance tonight now keeps that running number at 4 consecutive games.

I'm thinking JD or Devers might hit three bombs tomorrow, especially if you all still plan on starting CC.

And, btw, speaking of CC...I would not pitch him on Saturday. He will get ate up the way we're swinging the bat right now and you need him down the stretch to get innings. Chalk it up as a bullpen day and start him on Tuesday against TB.

Repeating these numbers: If you add the 5 runs allowed by Tanaka in his final inning last SAT against Colorado & the 7 runs given up by Paxton tonight, the rotation has a 19.06 ERA & a 2.87 WHIP in its last 22 2⁄3 innings, allowing 52 runs (48 ER), 52 hits, 13 walks and 17 HR.
