CC Sabathia would’ve quit months ago if Yankees weren’t so good
By Dan MartinSeptember 10, 2019

BOSTON — CC Sabathia threw another bullpen session Monday and his right knee held up fine, so the Yankees left-hander is still scheduled to take the mound Wednesday in Detroit.

As rough as the season has been for the 39-year-old, Sabathia said he’s happy he even has the option to pitch — and added he likely would have had season-ending surgery already if the Yankees didn’t have a chance to win the World Series.

Asked if the thought of another title has helped keep him going through four IL stints this year alone, Sabathia said: “It’s the only thing. I think if this team wasn’t in a position to win a championship, I probably would have had the surgery a long time ago.”

Sabathia has talked about having his knee replaced once his playing days are over — which he hopes isn’t for another month-plus.

“This is way better than I thought,” Sabathia said of how 2019 is ending up. “I didn’t think I was gonna get to this point, not with this knee. I think we knew coming into this season it was gonna be a battle. To still be able to have a chance to make starts is all I wanted.”

The rest of the regular season will be a balancing act for Sabathia, who wants to stay sharp for the playoffs as well as give his knee rest. But he knows he could suffer another setback at any point.

“There’s nothing really to manage,” Sabathia said. “If you wheel me around in a wheelchair … there’s nothing I can do. It flares up when it flares up. I feel good right now and knock on wood it continues to feel good.”

Sabathia was also agreeable to the idea Aaron Boone floated about possibly coming out of the bullpen in the postseason.

“It doesn’t matter,” Sabathia said. “Whatever my role is in the postseason, I’m good for it.”

And he doesn’t believe warming up in the pen will be an issue.

“My [pregame] warm-up is pretty much like a reliever anyway,” he said.

Sabathia called Sunday’s pregame ceremony held by the Red Sox “awesome.”

He was presented a “52” panel from the Green Monster by David Price.

“Price is like a little brother to me,” Sabathia said. “To give me a little piece of Fenway is pretty cool.”

Sabathia will be followed by Domingo German on Wednesday as the Yankees look to limit German’s innings in September — and get him used to a bullpen spot.

German was told of the plan on Sunday and noted he did the same thing in a game in April, when he tossed two scoreless innings after Sabathia threw five shutout innings.

The right-hander’s routine is not expected to change and if he’s used as a reliever in the playoffs, German said he was “fine” with it.

“We’re trying to win a championship,” German said through an interpreter. “The game will be the same.”

Gio Urshela was back in the lineup at third base on Monday after being activated from the 10-day IL on Sunday. He homered and doubled in the 5-0 victory.

Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery) is slated to start for Double-A Trenton on Tuesday, followed by Luis Severino (strained lat) on Wednesday.

The Yankees finished 14-5 against the Red Sox this season, the most wins by a team versus Boston since Detroit went 15-3 in 1973. “Since the first series, they just dominated us,’’ Boston manager Alex Cora said.

Boone said he was surprised by Dave Dombrowski’s ouster as Boston’s president of baseball operations late Sunday less than a year after the Red Sox won the World Series.

“It’s shocking,” Boone said. “A guy like Dave who’s had such a great career in this game and the recent success he had here. I think it caught me and a lot of us off guard.”

Yanks Win Two But Costly

Yanks Win Two But Costly

Happ pitched well in the first game but didn't make it through 5. Pulled with a pitch count of 99. Green got the win in relief. Encarnacion, strained oblique, Happ, bicep tendinitis, both left for NY for medical examination.

CC opened the night cap and passed Smoltz on the All-Time Strikeout list. German got his 18th win in relief. Urshela hit HR #20.

Sanchez left with a strained groin muscle.

Dodgers won. Stros and Rays didn't.

Yankees keep dominating AL East opponents
After the Yankees throttled the Blue Jays thanks to a five-home run attack (including two from Brett Gardner), they pushed their lead in the AL East to 9 1/2 games over the Rays. That alone is enough to tell you that the Yanks are dominating their division, but really it goes beyond even that. Here's this, current as of Saturday's win:

Katie Sharp
@ktsharp
Yankees: 52-18 vs AL East, the best record for any team within its division this season.

52 wins is tied with 2018 Red Sox (52-24) for most by AL East team within division since MLB expanded to 6 divisions in 1994.
5:59 PM - Sep 14, 2019

Yep, 52-18 against intra-divisional opponents, which comes to a winning percentage of .743. Here's how that record breaks down:

  • 12-5 vs. Rays
  • 14-5 vs. Red Sox
  • 9-6 vs. Blue Jays
  • 17-2 vs. Orioles
The Yankees still have five games against the Blue Jays and two against the Rays remaining. So they'll almost certainly break this current tie with the 2018 Red Sox. More to the point, the Yankees' magic number to win the division for the first time since 2012 is now down to four.

Yanks Fail To Clinch

Yanks Fail To Clinch

CC gave up 2 runs in his last NY start. Judge even the score at 2 with a 2 run HR. GERman pitched will in 2.1 innings in releif. Ottavino once again was human. He's allowed at least a run in last 4 appearances. This time he fielded a comebacker and threw high and wide for a play at the plate. It turned out to be the winning run. Stanton played and had a double in 3 trips.

Yanks still had a chance to back in with TB at LAD but the Rays rallied and won in extra innings.

Stros won to take over the lead for HFA.

Tanaka starts tomorrow.

Yankees' Domingo German placed on administrative leave for violating MLB's domestic violence policy
MLB has launched an investigation into the matter
Katherine Acquavella 5 hrs ago

On Thursday, Major League Baseball announced that Yankees right-hander Domingo German was placed on administrative leave under the league and Major League Baseball Player Associations' domestic violence policy.

Here's MLB's statement in full:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that New York Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán has been placed on Administrative Leave under the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy. Per the policy, the initial period of Administrative Leave may last up to seven days, barring an extension.

Major League Baseball's Department of Investigations has commenced an investigation into the matter that led to his placement on Administrative Leave. MLB will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.

The Yankees also commented on the situation:

"We fully support all measures being undertaken by the Commissioner's Office pursuant to the Policy on Domestic Violence. We support this policy which reinforces that domestic violence has no place in our society and cannot be tolerated. We have followed the lead of Major League Baseball and will continue to provide our complete cooperation throughout the investigative process. We reserve any further comment until the investigation reaches its conclusion. All questions pertaining to this matter should be directed to the Office of the Commissioner."

Manager Aaron Boone told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch that the Yankees' will make plans for the playoffs that do not include German. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, meanwhile, declined to comment about German.

German, 27, is 18-4 on the season with a 4.03 ERA in 143 innings. He most recently pitched 2 1/3 innings Tuesday night.

It was expected that German was going to have a crucial role with the Yankees during their playoff run. Boone previously suggested that German could start postseason games, but also hinted at other roles German could fill, such as being used for one inning out of the bullpen, or serving as a long reliever. On Thursday, the Yankees announced that they placed right-hander Michael King on their roster in German's spot. King posted a 3-1 record with a 4.18 ERA in 23 2/3 innings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

German was signed by the then Florida Marlins as an international free agent in 2009. In 2014, he was traded along with Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Jones to the Yankees for Martin Prado and David Phelps. German missed the 2015 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and made his MLB debut in 2017.

Neither the Yankees nor MLB released any additional details about what led to the investigation, and there is no telling how long it could be before German is disciplined, if at all.

MLB and MLBPA's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy first went into effect in August 2015. Since then, 14 players including German have been investigated by the league. The suspensions have varied in length, from a 15-game suspension to a 100-game suspension, without pay. Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera and Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias were both found in violation of the policy earlier this season.

In July, MLB announced that Herrera would be suspended the remainder of the season. In August, MLB announced that Urias would receive a 20-game suspension. This past March, MLB also suspended San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer after he was caught on video pushing his wife to the ground.

Tanaka was strong through 7 innings. 1 run on 4 hits, 0 BBs, 6Ks.

LeMahieu's 3 run HR was all the offense needed. The numbers 6,7, and 8 hitters, Maybin, Gardner, and Frazier, had 4 of NY's 8 hits, including 3 of 4 HRs, and 6 and 9 RBIs.

LeMahieu and Gardner set personal bests for HRs and RBIs in a season.

Yankees' Domingo German won't pitch again in 2019 following domestic violence ban, report says
The Yankees pitcher was placed on administrative leave under the league's domestic violence policy
Katherine Acquavella CBSSports 5 hrs ago

Yankees right-hander Domingo German will not pitch for the Yankees again in 2019 following his placement on the administrative leave this week. That includes the remainder of the regular season and any postseason games, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

On Thursday, Major League Baseball announced that German had been put on administrative leave under the league and Major League Baseball Player Associations' domestic violence policy. Olney reports that while the case is not fully resolved administratively, he will be on the shelf for the rest of the year. Here's MLB's statement in full:

Stros have the #1, #2, and #3 best ERAs in AL.

Verlander 2.50 ERA, Cole 2.61, and Greinke 3.05 are awesome. And they have Osuna out of the bullpen with one less save than Chapman.

NY's best ERA pitchers are Paxton #10 at 3.73, Tanaka #17 at 4.47, and Happ #23 at 5.01. and Severino with all of 9 innings under his belt.

Right now I assume NY's playoff rotation will be Paxton, Severino, and Tanaka.

NY needs to get 5 innings from the starters and stay within 2 runs until the cavalry, uh bullpen come over the hill.
