Güey

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Güey_(vulgar)

It is common to use both meanings of the term interchangeably:

To denote stupidity or ignorance, in expressions like "¡No seas güey!'" (Don't be an idiot!)...
To refer to the same person you are talking about like "No güey, no pude ir." (No dude, I couldn't go)...

LOL...I have this conversation all the time. To Mexicans, that word is like saying dude, and they say it ALL THE TIME. To El Salvadorians, that word is a cuss word and it's like you're calling them an asshole or even worse. I'm not Mexican, but I play soccer with Mexicans and one of my closest buddies is Mexican, so I hear the word all the time and thus I used to say it a lot. That is until a had players that I coached who were Salvadorian, and they didn't like that word so much LOL

Carry on...

La palabra correcta es buey, eso nadie lo duda. Sin embargo, en la cultura mexicana se utiliza el guey. Tambien el huey

cuñado - is another one that can get you into trouble. It can be a joke to a buddy, or someone you know. Or it can be fightin words to someone else.

yeah my college buddies got all of us saying "cunado way" as a greeting... I found out over the years it's not something you want to say in normal settings... lol
