The 2023 class is only outside of the Top 10 because 24/7 incorporates transfers into their class rankings. ND finished on ESD at 8th or 9th.
I don’t believe that’s accurate. We signed 23 players and got credit for 23 players in the team rankings.

I think losing Hillman and Bowen is what knocked them out of top 10.

I threw this in the class calculator:

Justin Scott
Cam Williams
CJ Carr
Guerby Lambert
Kygston Viliamu Asa
Isiah Canion
Kedren Young
Aneyas Williams
Mylachi Williams
Marquis Gallegos
Bryce Young
Micah Gilbert
Jack Larsen
Styles Prescod
Peter Jones
Leonard Moore
Karson Hobbs
Anthony Knapp
Owen Wafle
Cole Mullins
Kennedy Urlacher.

21 gets them to 274. They will prob take 25 so theyll surpass 280 essentially as long as they hit on Scott and Lambert. Huge recruitments that Freeman needs to win. If they do, this class would have top end talent at positions ND hasn’t been able to win at besides OL.
Adding another 4 Star puts them at around 276. Once you get to that many numbers, they increases aren’t much unless it’s 5 Stars or very high 4 Stars.
Take that class you just did & throw in an unranked 4 Star & see what you get?
(That’s how I got to 276.4, with 25 recruits)

How's everybody feeling about this class thus far? It feels like we actually got the crown jewels already (5 star QB and WR) that we've been coveting, but the potential rest of the class isn't giving me hype beyond the potential WR class. I'm probably underselling it though.
If you want to find optimism, it’s probably better for ND’s outlook that they’re now landing highly rated offensive skill players. Elite QB play can make up for a whole lot.

And it might change some outside perceptions of the program going forward.

I noticed the class ranking drop one spot every now and then after ESD. If you also go into class calculator, and start to remove transfers, you’ll noticed the class overall ranking start to go down a little in points.

ND brought in the top transfer in the country though. That would move them up, not down.
ND’s point total for 2023 recruits was 272.79
That’s not too 10.

How can that be true when we got at least two five starish commits and clas still a long way to go

Keep in mind the forecast now is for the current star ratings……they could go up for some players and down for others. Also, is overall class rank the most important or is it average star ranking per player? I’d go with the latter.

Honestly don’t care about class rank this year. The most important thing in this class is continued top end skill players and safeties. Having Carr in is a huge luxury.

I think it is important to get a quality guy or two on the OLine and DLine every class as well, it seems like we should be able to do so this year

So do we basically have no shot at a top 10
Class?
Not necessarily.
A 276 could be top 10 this year.
Each year the scores are different for what makes a top 10 class depending on what other teams score.
And players rankings will change between now & NSD, so you can have the exact same players now at 276, but after rankings are updated, the score could be 280 or whatever if individual rankings go up.

I think average scores are not going to come down due to the portal. Teams will have most consistent larger classes, including ND.

Based on the last 10 years, a score of 276 would be about the 9th ranked class on average.

So 9th is the ceiling? Felt like Freeman might be able to move that up some.
I think a 4 loss season is hurting him. We have landed and kept maybe one stud commit since the start of the 2022 season. We need to win and win big this year, plus show actual development of the roster. Hopefully this would give freeman that extra leg to land some studs at same Dline, Safety, Oline that we aren't really landing now.

This is also assuming we don't have guys that receive bumps in their rankings, which seeing as the staff is recruiting many guys who are just now seeing their offer list grow, may very well happen.

And the rankings can't capture how outsize the effect of a legit stud QB are, Carr might be a 4 or 5 star by signing day but his on field impact could be such a multiplier that as long as the rest of the roster is in the 5 - 10 rank range (and balanced and transfers and yada yada) we will be competing for natty's.

Anyone read Loy's "Coaches on the Road" article and think he may be hinting at a Canion commitment coming today?

If it makes you feel worse, Reaper beat both of you by like 3 hours and Rockin’ beat everyone by like 10 hours.
Or maybe that was the joke…

Who?

Kidding. I skim while at work so I miss little details of other posts.

I think the 9-4 season is hurting him. If they win 11+ games this year I would expect our 2025 class to be even better. If Freeman and Tommy boy had brought in just a serviceable grad transfer QB last year we probably would've finished the regular season at 10-2 and we'd probably have more momentum than we currently do.

One thing I’m trying to monitor is the Justin Scott situation.

He’s just down the road but no coaches are visiting him today? He would be the first person I would see.

Everyone is really quiet about him & kind of act funny when asked about him, sort of like with Kollie, when they would make up excuses like, “he’s in class” or “he’s banged up…” when they knew he was leaving.

With Scott there are never any updates, who doesn’t visit & doesn’t make plans to visit.
On ND’s big weekend he can’t make it because he “has to work,” yet the week before could fly to Miami for 3 days.

The way the coaches are acting, the way the insiders act & the way Justin seems disinterested in visiting ND recently seem odd to me.

Are they going to be in the Chicago area this weekend?

I don’t know, but both Al Washington & Al Golden are going to Pittsburgh today to see different players.
I would have either sent one to Pittsburgh & one to Chicago today (to specifically see Scott), or if you needed multiple guys at both places, I would have done Chicago first, today, then did Pittsburgh second.
I would have made sure Scott was seen today. Heck, I would have Freeman, Golden & Washington all there just to say hi. LOL

Edit: They will be in Chicago tomorrow (Friday). I’m not sure who all will be there, but hopefully all of them.
