Thank you. How do you compare the Founders to the other Founders Stouts?

This is the first Founders stout I've had so can't compare.

Never mind, I've had Breakfast Stout before. I prefer Breakfast Stout (who doesn't?) but Oatmeal Stout was solid. The Oatmeal Stout isn't as sweet or chocolaty, much tamer notes I think.

I'm drinking Devil's Backbone Schwartz Bier. It's good, probably because I'm partial to porters. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say this is a porter. Dry coffee notes but little bitterness. Maybe the difference between the two styles of beer is so thin that's it's hard to pick up the difference.

I bought a bomber of Firestone Sucaba today (and another bomber of the Stone Old Guardian Dry Hopped with Pekko hops, and a 6 pack of Oskar Blues G'Knight).

New Belgium Citradelic. It's a tangerine IPA. I got sold by the name. It's a decent beer but not top of the line by any means. They got the tangerine part for sure though. Another thing I like about is it's relatively low ABV%. I might stash the rest of the sixer for nights (or days) when I need a beer like that.

I was very unimpressed upon first tasting, it definitely got better as it warmed up though.

Oskar Blues G'Knight Imperial Red IPA. I haven't had it in a while, and since August recommended it, I thought that I should retaste it "in the name of science".

N: lots of caramel malt, orange, grapefruit, tangerine and a little floralness. Orange jam?
P: caramel malt, orange scone, some pine, some floral notes and grapefruit. Slight taste of orange slice candy.
F: hops and bitterness grow on the finish. Pine and floralness grow along with grapefruit rind. Malt now takes a backseat.

Rather sticky on the tongue. I had it from an IPA glass and I wonder if that influenced the flavor. I will try it again tonight or tomorrow from a different glass to see how it changes. Overall I rate it a very good but unspectacular 87-90.

Having it now from a Tulip glass. Definitely sweeter and less bitter from this glass (though still has some bitter piney notes, bitter grapefruit rind and floralness). Orange marmalade drizzled with caramel and sprinkled with pine.

Been hammering white Russians lately. Using whipping cream so I have to watch the calories, but damn it they're good.

How are the stout beers? I'm just really getting into the IPA scene (not that white russian pansy shit koon) but I see alot of you guys drinking stouts.

Stone definitely makes some good ones that are readily available this time of year. Same for Lagunitas. Founders Breakfast Stout and Ten Fidy by Oskar Blues are two of my go to Stouts. Like IPAs, the stouts vary in taste but winter is a great time for stouts!

Some of the harder ones to find Goose Island Bourbon County and The Abyss by Deschutes.

I had Cigar City Jai Alai IPA and Ballast Point Commodore stout the other night. Both were pretty good. Jai Alai is my kind of IPA, as in, it's not like sucking on a sudsy lemon. And the Commodore is my kind of stout; not too light and creamy like traditional stouts. It had a nice roasted coffee flavor to give it some backbone.

Coors Light (don't judge) while watching the Wild and Blackhawks. To make up for my Coors Light, I have a 2015 Deschutes Abyss aging for after my half marathon in June.

Stone Americano Stout. Imperial Stout brewed with Espresso roast coffee beans.

N: Coffee and more coffee. Some roasted malt and caramel as well but the nose is dominated by Coffee. Maybe a hint of vanilla and hops (pine forest and citrus?).
P: Straight Espresso. Takes a few seconds for the taste buds to find other flavors. Some roasted malt and caramel again with some slight charred wood notes as well. A hint of pure cocoa powder as well. Hint of hops as well (kind of forest/herbal with a touch of citrus)
F: Straight espresso. Turning towards bitter notes and some roasted malt as well. Most of the sweetness is gone on the finish.

Not a bad stout but very simple with only one dominant flavor. If you like Espresso/dark roasted coffee this is for you. If you want a complex Imperial Stout it is probably a pass (especially at the price of $16 for a 6 pack).

Good thing, while the Abyss is really good fresh it gets even better with some aging.

Two of my favorite styles are IPAs and Stouts. While IPAs are hop forward, Stouts are Roasted malt forward. NDinMichigan already covered some really good stouts but I will add a few (and 1 imperial porter). I think I remember where you live, so I will try to recommend beers generally available there (though some are seasonal).
Oskar Blues Ten Fidy (one of the best stouts out there)
Sierra Nevada Narwhal (seasonal but you still might find some on the shelf)
Clown Shoes Undead Party Crasher
North Coast Old Rasputin
Firestone Velvet Merlin
Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout
If you can find Bell's Expedition Stout, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, Stone Russian Imperial Stout and most of Founders Stouts (Imperial and Breakfast).

There are plenty of other good stouts as well. One Porter that I recommend if you like coffee is Ballast Point Victory at Sea (a vanilla coffee Imperial porter).

So in summary if you want to try big dark beers I suggest Oskar Blues Ten Fidy and Ballast Point Victory at Sea and then use that as a jumping off point based on what flavors you like or dislike from them.

If you want more recommendations just let me know.
