I found a 22oz bottle of Alpine Nelson today in AZ. Needless to say it came home with me.

I haven't had it in a while but from what I remember:
For a standard stout (not imperial or RIS or barrel aged) it is one of the best of its style.

So you're saying that I should jump on it at 7 dollars a sixer?

Bottle of local Chianti and bottle of local Merlot ( unless I missed a joke, idk)

Nah, no joking.

I certainly hope that it was just a Sangiovese, and California is not insulting the name of Chianti now. I've had some pretty decent Cali Sangioveses, but none that can hold a candle to the Tuscan offerings.

For some reason I thought that the term "Chianti" was protected. Even if it isn't I am surprised that a California winery would use that term.

Oh it 100% is. In fact, if I remember correctly, it may be the oldest protected name for wine in the world or Western Europe. But some Cali wineries find that protected wine names are dumb and unAmerican. I grimace everytime I see a label of "California Champagne". Just label it Sangiovese...what's the big friggin' deal.

Mother Road Tower Station IPA. Kind of local as it is brewed in Flagstaff in Northern Arizona. Pretty good with grapefruit, some peach and white grape. Also the can is interesting because the top peels off so that it can double as a pint glass if you don't have glassware.

Mr. pkt, I've heard that Arizona doesn't have a ton of good craft beer. Is that true?

Generally speaking yes. Outside of couple of breweries, most of craft breweries are really new and thus still finding their feet. Dragoon makes a very good IPA (88-90), and San Tan brewery has some good special beers (but their standard beers are very very average) such as Fat Alber (Imperial brown ale brewed with smoked apples, brown sugar, and toasted oats, and a fair amount of hops), KiloHop IPA, Count Hopula, and Night of the Living Red) and Mother Road makes a few ok ones.

Ok, that is a long winded way of saying that the craft beer scene here is subpar but improving.

ETA: That is brewed here, we get a ton of good Cali beers and some Michigan beers since we have so many transplants.
