In my Northern Michigan brain I'd assume that Arizona and California would have the same seasons. But it's fall like a motherf***er here.

They generally do (well at least SoCal and Arizona do. It was in the high 90's here today. Though we started getting pumpkin beers in August.

Holy shit. It was high 55 low 38 today here. I'm in fall and winter beer mode until April.

I am jealous. It is still 85 here and the sun has been down for an hour. I love stouts but it is very hard to get into them when it is so hot outside.

Pros and cons to both. I drink stouts for 6 months, you drink everything else.

I had it one time before but I was pretty deep into the night when I had it. Mostly I remember it tasting like a hoppy barleywine.

How far off am I? Anything I should know (besides the fact that it has a monster abv)?

Just had one the other day. Definitely a monster abv. I thought Barleywine when I had it too.

Curious to know your thoughts after you have this one.

Dogfish Head 120 minute Imperial IPA from a snifter.

N: orange marmalade and alcohol really dominate. Some light grapefruit and bread are there underneath if you look for it.
P: Again orange marmalade and alcohol dominate, with some grapefruit, lemon, and caramel.
F: Growing bitterness. More on caramel to start but that fades to reveal orange and grapefruit that have been soaked in alcohol.

This was bottled relatively recently (late July), and it comes off as a really malty IIPA or a Super Hoppy Barleywine. Personally I think the alcohol is too strong because the flavor of it dominates many of the other flavors which makes it seem less complex. Also there is a slight smell/taste of lemon pledge that I can't quite shake.

ETA: I might post some follow-up thoughts as it warms up.

As it warms up the malt becomes more prominent. Also the alcohol seems to fade a little but that might just be because I am getting use to it.

Has anybody tried their Black IPA before? I'm curious. Also, I've been looking forward to this Enjoy By release for a while!

I had one from a local brewer. It was really good. Kind of like a porter on the front end with the bitter dry IPA grapefruit on the finish.

I didn't pick up all of the tastes and smells that you did but did for some. I really think this beer is too strong. The alcohol just dominates the taste. If someone put it in front of me, I would drink but I wouldn't purchase again.

I like 90 minute a lot more. More balanced IMO.

I don't know if I would buy it again, but if I did, I would age it for a 2-3 years to see how it changes with time.

So we've got a new brewery in town which would now be our only brewery. It's called Austin Brothers and they hail from San Diego, California. They've only released four beers to start and they're going with some safety beers to start. Today I had their amber, blonde, wheat, and brown. Mostly styles I would never buy besides the brown. I really enjoyed the brown and the wheat and the other two were ok. I'm pretty excited overall. They are planning an IPA and a Milk Stout release that I'm pumped for.

Hangar 24 Betty IPA. Pretty good. Nose is great with loads of tropical and citrus fruits. Palate starts on tropical fruits but by the finish it becomes bitter citrus rinds. Overall a very nice IPA.

Just go to Bevmo or Total Wine. My local Total Wine is full of Fall Beers. I stopped by my local one today and there was probably 20+ Oktoberfest beers and easily 30+ pumpkin beers. I can't wait for my Fresh Hop beers.

I do as often as possible... The nearest of either is in Rancho or Redlands and I'm not driving through the Cajon Pass and all that madness just for beer, most of my college buddies still live in Redlands or Riverside so when I visit them I stock up...

Does your local grocery store not carry Fall beers? My local Fry's (Ralph's in CA) has a few Oktoberfest beers and Pumpkin beers. I think that Safeway (Vons in CA) has a few here as well.

They always do... And I have a mom and pop 'bev mo' literally within walking distance of my house... They just haven't hit the shelves yet..

Agree. The only DFH beer i would buy again would be 90 Minute or maybe Miles Davis Bitches Brew but only if the price was right.

What do you think of it?

I'm a fan of big, hoppy, chewy IPAs....but this lacks balance for me....its definitely all of those things, but doesn't have much character beyond that. It's good, but not great. I probably wouldn't get it again for the price.

Hmm, I might need to pour some whisky.

So far so good. I have not had this before that I recall. It's milder than I anticipated but it has a strong finish. 92 proof I think. There is a floral I can't place.

Edit... honeysuckle.... yeah that's it.
