I had Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cab last night that I got for Christmas. I cooked some steaks for the Missus and me and broke it open. I was underwhelmed. It was a good wine, just nothing special. I've had better Cabs at half the price. I would have been majorly disappointed if I had spent $$$ on it. For a bottle that lists at over $100 at most restaurants, I thought I'd get more out of it. And now I have to lie to my boss about how much I liked it so he doesn't feel like a heel for giving it to me.

This is what I've heard about Silver Oak as well. It's too bad.

Met a friend from college for some drinks and sampled a couple of local beers and then had Mike Hess Umbrix Imperial Stout and Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine 2013 release.

The beers I sampled (5oz each) were
THAT RoadRash IPA
Sentinel Peak Icebreak IPA
Borderlands Scotchy Scotch Scotch
and the not so local Mike Hess Solis IPA

Sam Adams Winter Ale/Lager. Pretty mediocre, but good enough for a dollar a beer.

Live Oak Primus Weizenbock. This is where it's at

Red Diamond Temperamental.
Blend: 85 % Tempranillo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Carignan

My wife got it for Christmas from a coworker. Since she isn't drinking it became mine. I didn't have much hope so I paired it with a petite sirloin steak.

Upon first opening it while cooking it tasted like alcoholic grape juice. 6/10 because there was no off notes (well unless you count grape juice as an off note).
Once the steak was done it did better, adding a touch of berries and cooking spices. I would give it 7/10 with food. Maybe 7.5 if you like sweeter wines.

512 Pecan Porter. I'll get you the wines when I'm back, Mr. pkt. I'm excited for this weekend. I think I'm finally going to be able to break open a Barolo.

SN Narwhal. Better than I remember.

Brands? Vintages? Thoughts?

So for the Cotes-du-Rhone, Caractere Cotes-du-Rhone 2013. Opened up very well over the night. Delicious. Fruit opened up with air. It paired well with some homemade beef stew.

Chianti Classico is 2013 Rocca delle Macie. Delicious slightly below midrange Chianti Classico. As every Italian wine, it needs food, but the cherry is there. Excellent for when I want to get myself a little nicer than an every day, but don't want to spend any more than 14.

I'm waiting for incoming work that I need to finish a project, and am reading "What are you drinking?" posts from 2014. Can't pop one until I finish. How double-sad is that? Make it triple-sad and tell me what you guys are enjoying during this fine Friday Happy Hour.

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tropical IPA x2. Had the first one from a pint glass and it was ok. Great nose but the taste is just ok. Gavin the second one from the bottle and while the nose isn't as good the taste isn't too bad. Was hoping to have this as my house IPA for the next couple of months but so far it isn't looking good. Will try it this weekend from the IPA glass to see how it does.

Yeah, I saw the SN Beer Camp Tropical and thought about grabbing some, but my inventory is just too jammed, plus the "tropical" sorta scared me. Being on a winter beer kick, I did pick up a four pack of N'Ice Chouffe from Brasserie d'Achouffe last weekend, so I'm thinking about one of those tonight. Or maybe just a nice Deschuttes Black Butte Porter with a burger. Or maybe start with a nice short Widow Jane bourbon, followed by a All Day IPA from Founder, and THEN something heavier and dark. When I get outta this place. If ever I get outta this place.

5.3% Chocolate Milk Stout from Dangerous Man Brewery. Turnt.

Peanut Butter Porter up next. Never knew I liked dark beer but I reallylike the coffee tasting ones. If anyone has any suggestions, especially around MSP area, I'd appreciate it. Brand new to Porters.

Whose PBPorter? I saw one by Terrapin -- Liquid Bliss/Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter -- that I almost grabbed, mostly because I liked their Coffee Oatmeal Stout so much. I'd try it if someone told me it was worth a try.

PB porter is same place, dangerous man. Had an oatmeal porter I really liked about a month ago, can't remember the brewery name. Maybe 612?

This, I've heard good things about. Again, I wondered about the tropical/sweet factor, but your taste and mine seem similar, so if you like it, it's worth a shot.

There is some sweetness but there is a nice bitter roasted note from the underlying porter that keeps it from being runaway sweet. Definitely has the sweet coconut notes and some semi-sweet cocoa notes (more like cocoa powder than milk chocolate).

That sounds really good besides the All Day IPA. For some reason Founder's IPAs and me just don't get along (and for that matter I am not a huge fan of many session IPAs, though a few have been pretty good).

Bought Laphroig 10 year the other day. Gotta get used to that. Reminds me of smoking a cigar while chewing on dirt.
