CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

LOS ANGELES -- Southern California is looking into whether it may have violated NCAA recruiting rules while pursuing highly rated recruit Joe McKnight, a university official said.

McKnight signed a national letter of intent with USC on Wednesday and made comments during a news conference that seemed to suggest communications involving former Trojan Reggie Bush, who is now with the New Orleans Saints.

Former players are forbidden from telephoning prospective recruits, their relatives or guardians.

"We're aware of it, and we are looking into it," sports information director Tim Tessalone told the Associated Press late Thursday.

The university's action was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on its website late Thursday.

USC coach Pete Carroll denied any call took place, and McKnight's high school football coach said the recruit misspoke during the news conference. The star running back has been living with his high school coach, J.T. Curtis.

"It never happened," Carroll told the Times.

During the Wednesday news conference, McKnight said Carroll set up a conference call so he and Curtis could talk to Bush and ease concerns USC might face sanctions.

The NCAA and the Pac-10 Conference are investigating whether Bush or his family received "improper benefits" from agents while he was playing for USC.

Regarding McKnight, Mike Matthews, associate commissioner of compliance for the Pac- 10, said boosters are not supposed to be involved in the recruiting process but could not comment without knowing specifics. NCAA spokeswoman Crissy Schluep also said she could not comment without knowing more.

Curtis told the Times on Thursday that he spoke to Carroll during McKnight's recruitment, but not on a conference call with McKnight or Bush. He also said McKnight told him "Coach Carroll was talking to Reggie on the speakerphone and Joe was able to listen and hear Reggie Bush's side of the story," the newspaper reported.

After being informed of Carroll's denial Thursday night, Curtis called McKnight and later said the recruit never heard Bush on a speakerphone.

"He said when they came in his house, the discussion was brought up about probation and that's when the conversation came up that they had talked to Reggie, but Joe was not there," Curtis said. "He said, 'I was not on the speakerphone. I never called him and he never called me. I want to make it clear I never spoke to Reggie and he never spoke to me. I just messed it up. I shouldn't have said it that way (at the news conference)."'

Curtis said McKnight may have been overwhelmed by the attention and scrutiny that accompanied his announcement.

"At the press conference, it seemed like he got 1,000 questions in five minutes," Curtis said. "If you saw what was going on it would be easier to understand."

I cannot stand USC and think they should pay for Bush's violations Butttttttt

The rule about talking to former players is stupid. A kid and his parents are trying to make the best decision where to go to college - who bettter to get info from on what it is like to play for a team = a former player. I assume that it is just a USC or pac ten policy? Zorich talked to Hughes, so i just do not get the hye over this.

On the one hand, rules are rules. A school that's willing to break this rule is probably willing to break other rules too.

On the other hand... I agree this particular rule is dumb. And this potential violation pales in comparison to the (alleged) violations that took place while Reggie Bush was still at USC.

It's all so silly, though... I mean, they're talking about this kid being on the phone with Carroll while Carroll has Bush on another line on speakerphone in the background with the volume turned up, and Bush is talking to Carroll while the recruit is listening in over his phone... did they REALLY think that would be enough to keep them out of trouble?

I guess it all depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is.

What kills me is all the BS people scramble to come up with.....

"I shouldnt have said it that way"

yeah, you shouldve said it in no way because you screwed up and busted yourself. Thats almost as good as "I thought my mom wanted me to go there"

or you couldve just asked mom direct..........

all bullshit just like the whole recruiting in general. The process is crooked in every facet.

I have a easy solution to cleaning up recruiting, have a NCAA sanctioned neutral party chaperone with the recruits at any visit days to the schools and he/she is to be at all meetings/functions.

That would be too easy though.....

And ... umm ... SLIGHTLY costly. Maybe the NCAA could take care of all uninsured Americans and end world poverty while they're at it?

Not looking to pick a fight, just pointing out the facts.

there will be nothing done about this. Just like the ncaa will not do anything about the bush thing. If any other school would have done any of this they would take schoolies away. There are just certain programs like usc and ohio st that they won't do anything too.

If Pete didn't want Joe to hear what was being said he would have talk to Bush without Joe in the room. You can't talk to past players, but you can listen in from across the room. Just forget the rule all together if you can do things like that.

If we took all of the money Bush wants to spend in Iraq for the next two years ( 250 billion), i bet we could fund that for the next 50 years. Consider it a "War on Recruiting Violations." Maybe scare us alittle that all these big bad football recruiters are trying to steal our children. Maybe even invent a color coded rating for each recruiter based on his past recruiting prowess. That shit would get passed by congress in a heart beat. LOL!

its kind of like the phone calls to recruits. you can only call them so much but you can text them everyday just because texting has not made it into the NCAA rules. I would be surprised if they even know what texting is.

Lol, yeah, NCAA sports is operating on razor thin margins - it would be so hard to hire a 3rd party that lives near the schools campus for the recruiting season to chaperone official visit days as a neutral observer.........that would just break the bank.

Maybe Tostitos can help foot the bill? I mean I still see those logos when I close my eyes because theyre emblazened into my retina.

Now were worried about the NCAA's coffers, Ive heard it all.

If the best they can come up with is "the kid misspoke", that is sad. Sounds like more spin to me. USC is getting a reputation about them, and it sounds deserved.

So let me get this straight:

McKnight says:
-Carroll set-up a call with McKnight, Curtis, and Bush to discuss the ALLEGED transgressions and potential sanctions;
-He (McKnight) was not there when his (McKnight's) discussion with Carroll and Bush occured

Carroll says:
-No call ever took place

Curtis says:
-He spoke to Carroll during recruiting, but was never on a call with Bush and McKnight
-McKnight was a 'fly on the wall' when Carroll spoke to Bush who was on speakerphone
-McKnight didn't hear Bush on the speakerphone; sounds a (CHRIS) little different than the above statement (this statement after hearing the Carroll denial)
-McKnight may have been overwhelmed by the attention and scrutiny

Don't see anything here; seems like the stories pretty much hang together.........."Mulholland Drive" was easier to follow than this!!!!

Hey, it worked for Slick Willy & he had about as much teflon as Pete Carroll, so anything goes w/ no repercussions for those 2. Must be nice.

More like "USC has continued to have a reputation". Since John McKay & John Robinson & even back in the Frank Gifford era, they've been a football factory w/ athletes as opposed to an institution of higher learning w/ student-athletes. They roll through the 70s w/ NCs & clouds of suspicion w/ nothing coming to fruition. Then a little school in Dallas does the same thing & they get the death penalty. Granted SMU deserved some harsh sanctions & Craig James still takes pride in being a dumb jock, but the death penalty is impossible to come back from & SMU was the guinea pig used to discern this fact. No way were they gonna risk testing the death penalty on a school like USC or OSU or UT w/ a high profile, a vast alumni base & the ability to generate millions of $ for the NCAA. I have no problem w/ an athlete going to a university strictly to play ball & showcase their talents for the pros, but you still have to get your ass out of bed to attend class & progress to a degree (any degree) to show you're on the up and up. If they then want to use up their eligibility w/o getting a degree, that's their problem but the NCAA requires them to be progressing towards one. Once they're out in the real world w/ a bum knee, no pro prospects & no education, they need to realize there's no safety net & there's nothing else owed to them. But in closing, the likes of Carroll & Tressell are coated w/ teflon and immune from any scandal or wrongdoing. Life's not fair, as ND fans we should realize there are 2 sets of rules. I prefer ND's rules & character to those of the football factories.

USC will probably get a slap on the hand for this, now what will be more intresting is the federal investigation of Bush, if their report does indeed show he got money and other privileges, the NCAA may have no choice but to impose some kind of sanctions and possibly strip USC of their championships.
