Is there a way to upload your own avatar ?

Yes, there is. Our fearless leader thinks of everything.

Look over to the left and up, above "Reply to Thread" is "User CP". Click there and it will open your User Control Panel. There are a list of functions on the left side. Click "edit Avatar". The instructions seem self explanatory.

Well, that would work for switching to one of the site's built-in avatars. But to actually upload your own unique avatar, first you have to pay for a Varsity Club subscription. Look for the link near the upper-right corner of the screen.
