Alford is a great recruiter, but he wasn't that great of a RB coach.

Myer is a piece of work is he not-so glad he never had his wishes granted to coach at Notre Dame. His 3 guys every year no questions asked would have ended up embarrassing Notre Dame. He can afford to court and catch Alford because of the prolific recruiting tools he can offer. I doubt that the $$$$ is the same. Alford wont be missed as a coach of running backs but he will be missed as a man they can talk to and rely on-good guy lost from the program. Notre Dame cant afford losses like this but as they do I'm all for getting more former players on board like the Lyght hire. Find an alum runningbacks coach.

ND has averaged a 10+ win season once every 7 years the last two decades. You are asking too much IMHO if a 10 win season brings any kind of long term disappointment.

*all 3 of the 10+ win teams had humiliating bowl losses to boot.

Seriously, right now you'd be happy with 8-9 wins with this team. The most talent we've had in a long long time and that would make you satisfied?

I wish you were my boss

Fair question, I'd be slightly disappointed but willing to keep pushing forward.

Basically where i'm at. We really shouldn't go less than 10-2 w/o a huge injury bug. Also not sure if i'd rather go 10-3 with a bowl loss or win.

I get your frustration, and definitely feel it too. I'm at the point where a stretch of at least 3 9-10 win seasons in a row would pacify me though. This "take one step forward, two steps back" $hit has to end.

Depends on the regular season wins for me, as I'm sure it does for you. A bowl loss would be much easier to stomach with wins over U$C and Clemson.

Denson seems to make sense as the next rb coach. Former Notre Dame great, from Florida, and was a head coach for a high school football team in Florida. He should be an excellent representative for Notre Dame.

Yea and that's where I'm at and I view this move, for now, as exactly what you said. One step forward and two back, especially recruiting. Depending on how we win those 9 games, I could tweak my tune a little. Nonetheless, this season was frustrating and personally I'm sick of reasons. Injuries, not the right QB, players getting suspended, etc. I realize this is Notre Dame and there are certain hurdles that we have to overcome but that's why I'm not saying NCG or bust. We should be able to win 10 games consistently. It's time to start showing it.

Haha, thanks champ! The product in the field hasn't been very good as of late so acting as if this doesn't hurt is insane. Our team just won 8 games. I'm not usually a sky is falling guy and I'm not even saying that now but to act is if this team has been productive is downright silly. I understand reasons, in fact I make them, but there are results and there is no way this makes short term results better.

Side note, you don't need to refer me as champ, if you have something to say, say it no need for condescending comments like that.

You bet "chief" lolol. Just busting Luck

I love the "Hate Urban Liar" club on here yet many-I can only presume to be the same folks-have in the past clamored for him to coach ND.

Urban showed his true colors when he chose UF over ND. I would never want him to coach in any capacity at ND and was slightly miffed when BK had him visit a few years ago.

BTW-In my opinion, a shake-up on the staff can at times be a very good thing.

Urban's a winner and our administration frankly don't try to be anymore.

Personally, I'm not too worried. We still have the same head coach and players. Saban loses his assistants all the time but still dominates. It's all about the system, and if I recall, Tony Alford was the only staff member carried over from the Weis era. Eluding to the fact that if you buy into Brian Kelly and what he accomplished at previous coaching ventures, then you don't (for lack of a better word) need Alford. This is not an excuses to change any win/loss expectations for next season. Does it suck to lose a guy to OSU? yes. Would I rather have Alford? yes! We may not get 2-3 recruits next year that we would have other wise, but other than that this is a minor setback.

Funny, we're lucky Urban Meyer is a dick and waited until everyone was signed to let the RB coach go. If he wasn't such a sleeze bag and that happened a week ago, Alford moves over and I doubt we get Dexter Williams, and definitely wouldn't have gotten Coney had he not already been enrolled.

And yeah, I'd take Urban in a heartbeat at ND. I want winners.

I don't blame Tony for making a move that he felt was best for his career. Heck, I just did the same thing.

I do blame ND, however. We're long past the point where they can justify not doing $ for $ against other schools in salary for assistants. They make more money than nearly any program in the game -- they wouldn't even notice it if they put more money into the salary pool.

I do not believe this to be the end of the world.

There is a real opportunity for increased production from our RB head coach on Saturdays. Whoever it is will be walking into an embarrassment of riches the second they arrive at the Gug. Four high quality backs and a ton of talent along the offensive line must be quite inviting for any and all available RB coaches.

Unfortunately, the 2-3 recruits he would bring in were typically top 150 players. Hopefully we are able to continue that type of production in Florida, but it won't be easy. Alford was a one man wrecking crew in the most competitive recruiting market in the country. Losing that sucks. There is no way around it.

In the end, I believe recruiting is based on success more than anything. Saban could likely get a few talented kids to join him at Alabama A&M, but nothing to the extent he does now. Top flight athletes want to win. If we can become a consistent winner - ten plus games a year - I see no reason ND can't fill a recruiting class with quality talent regardless of who is selling.

Count me in the category of disappointed to lose TA. But everyone should come in off the ledge. He was a good recruiter, but Autry Denson, if that is the replacement, is currently coaching in South Florida and would seem to be an easy transition, given that he can sell the experience as a player. And, while I know that this may not be popular, lets not forget, BK inherited TA. (Yes, I know that TA had to earn the job with BK, so please don't bring that up.) He may be feeling some heat, so he may have used this to bring in some guys that he hired. Maybe BK hears the topics on this board and lately, some of the topics would suggest that the only coach earning his salary was TA and he thought there was undo credit. And lets not forget, while he is seen as a great recruiter, these teams have been 8-5 3 of the last 4 years (and the leaders of the 12-0 team were Weis recruits.) Maybe we need to target a different type of player to fit the system that we are playing (BK"s offense/BVG defense) and, god forbid, quit worrying about a star system that is based on who shows up to camps in the summer. After all, I found the most interesting stat from SB/NSD week is that there was not one 5 star recruit on the Super Bowl teams and more than 60% were rated as 2 star or lower.
Who knows? But, TA, good luck at OSU. Work your arse off so you can get out of there and I can root for you again!

I think it needs to he said that although Alford was definitely a good recruiter, his position groups have underperformed. GA3 never got it to get her in spite of great speed and bryant appears to be the same. Even Theo and Jonas only put it together in their final years.. Meanwhile every other college out there has freshmen putting up huge numbers

I think Tony's a great guy and has been a great ambassador for Notre Dame. You know what though, they'll be others and we'll find them.

I wish him the best. Maybe we take a step back in places, but c'mon guys, this is still Notre Dame.
