That's a QB coaches job, oh wait you're right, Tommy isn't capable. Not sure TB12 was able to handle the decision making that it takes. Kid is still very raw.

He ran them just fine last year lolNot sure TB12 was able to handle the decision making that it takes. Kid is still very raw.
I’ll acknowledge that Rees (rightfully) accepted blame tonight, but this quote sticks out and rubbed me the wrong way for some reason:
In any event, some bits from the presser can be found on Mike’s Twitter account.
RPO or zone read? He only threw the ball 35 times last year, no idea how many were RPOs.He ran them just fine last year lol
We started off the season with little to no RPOs last year too. Tommy relented after the btw week and increased their usage....and then went back to the stuff that didn't work at the beginning of last year again. Definition of insanity.
He's in pretty tight with Rees. I think Carr committed more for the school though. Hopefully he wouldn't bail on that.I bet we hire Brian Hartline as OC. He’s a big enough name to keep Carr happy and excite the receivers.
Thanks Dale. Appreciate the context! The question asked him how he can provide perspective based off his playing days
I have no idea how many exactly were, but I know for a fact that he did run them and run them well.RPO or zone read? He only threw the ball 35 times last year, no idea how many were RPOs.
Holy cow that 2019 class… Kyren is literally the only skill guy in the class!!!!Yeah. Not excusing Rees here but look at our 2020 class. On offense it's Mayer, Tyree and... Pyne?

2019 we went big on OL and, well, the only offensive player who turned out to be any good was Williams, who was not very highly-rated, and is now gone.

Those are our current juniors and seniors. It's remarkable how weak those classes are, especially on offense.

You are 100% correct about the white board stuff. Also In 21 and 22 he missed out on two top ten QBs that wanted to go there.Well, I think you just start recruiting talent and not white board wizards. And I'm being 100% serious. Just start recruiting the young men that can sling it around and worry about teaching them the game later. I think Rees is the problem with QB recruiting and has been. For every 1 CJ Carr he's blown several recruitments to think otherwise.
We need to recruit pure talent at the position and let the process sort itself out.
I have no idea how many exactly were, but I know for a fact that he did run them and run them well.
This play for example. Simple, effective, difficult for the defense to stop, gets Buchner moving, and gives him 3 simple decisions to make. So naturally we throw it out when Buchner wins the job.
I get the running part but you don't necessarily have to get him running to throw a simple RPO slant. Matt Corral quite literally made his entire career on running RPOs effectively. So did Sam Howell, and Sam Hartman, Marcus Mariota, the Arkansas QB, RG3, etc. It's actually insane to me that we didn't try to work those into the offense for Buchner more. That's who he is. It's coaching malpractice.Yep. I expected more of that with TB but since we didn’t, maybe he’s just not very good at it (Yes I know, it could be that Rees sucks) The problem with him is he’s not very accurate and he’s injury prone so you don’t want to run him too much. We’re now going from the poor man’s Wimbush to the poor man’s Book. The failure in QB recruiting/development is by far the biggest issue with the offense. Most important position on the team.
It’s kind misleading saying a running QB getting hurt is “injury prone”. A 250 lb guy land full force on his shoulder. Anyhow, most QB’s that are used on designed runs a lot get seriously hurt eventually.Yep. He’s hurt now, he was hurt last year, and he missed a season in high school. Plus missed another season due to COVID regulations. He needs his mid season beanie on. Beanie Tom was a different animal last year.Tommy should grow the beard back. He looks 12.
It will be interesting to see what Tommy dials up this weekend. I think it's safe to say Tommy will be here through the end of the year, but if things don't improve we'll have a new OC soon after the seasons over.
I can tell you it's not going to be a 45 yard dart or opening up the offense in any way. Pyne is mostly limited to the pocket, is small, and has low grade arm strength. That's a dangerous combo with a poor OL. I suspect we will see Angeli within a few weeks either due to inefficiency or injury. It will be interesting to see what Tommy dials up this weekend. He smirked because the question was snarky. And Tommys response isn't wrong - PA passing isn't going to be very effective with a shit run game. His smirk after Freeman basically asked him why they don’t run PA more was weird. Thought it was a fair and good question.
It was last year. Helped open up the run game actually. He smirked because the question was snarky. And Tommys response isn't wrong - PA passing isn't going to be very effective with a shit run game.
Which would probably be double trouble for Brian Hartline.I don't suspect even Lincoln Riley would be successful as OC without an OL.
Well Buchner was 9/11 in PA in the first two games. I agree that it works better when the run game is there, but it still worked in the first two weeks. He smirked because the question was snarky. And Tommys response isn't wrong - PA passing isn't going to be very effective with a shit run game.
Perhaps. It's hard to say how good/bad Rees is with such a horrendous OL, mediocre QB's, and a poor WR room. How would TR look if he were Ohio States OC? If he had Stroud and Njigba and company? I am not defending Rees, but it's food for thought.Which would probably be double trouble for Brian Hartline.
