Rees had some head scratching moments. If you told me that OSU would be held to 21 points, I thought Notre Dame would win by at least a touchdown.
-Salerno running a fade that ended up with offensive PI. Why is he the one running that route? Styles? Lenzy? Merriweather? He looked like a gunner on punt team.
-That resulted in 1st & 25. Rees then went with a QB draw, jet sweep, QB draw. That is chicken shit football. I understand you have a new QB, but you need to at least try to get a first down.
-The first offensive drive. They didn't even look Mayer's way once. The only pass catcher on the time that is worth a fuck. Design a play to get him the ball.
I have thoughts on that specific play.
First, it was a wrinkle they set up with the same form/motion/run look 3-4 times throughout the game. I was impressed with Tommy’s patience and the moment he chose to call it. Salerno motioned inside the TE, and I believe blocked backside the previous times they ran it. Here the pass look went right, and Salerno delayed before slipping out & up.
Second, despite good design, OSU was ready for it.
Third, I’m 100% with you that needed to be Bauman A. To actually provide real blocks while you’re setting it up, and B. To better sell it.
No way Salerno shoulda been the guy on that concept. But I liked the design and think it coulda/woulda worked if we got push and rush yards on the design before slipping a guy out.
