All in all would not hang this on Rees. O line was out numbered all night and Buchner being a experience minus could not make the calls on the fly. Bonus To OSU for their game planning. Overall, it could have been much worse. That being said a few screens…
He called 3 straight run plays on 1st and 25 down by 3 from mid field.

That was the most playing not to lose bullshit I have ever seen.

On the one hand, he has no business being a OC of a top 5-ish program. It’s not his fault Kelly was lazy and waddled hit fat ass 10 feet down the hall to promote him. On the other hand, he‘s a mediocre play caller. Considering he has WHIFFED on QB recruiting in 2023 and not pulled his weight in that class, you’d think he could call a decent game. But nope. I’m as big of a Freeman supporter as anyone, but no one held a gun to his head and demanded Rees be kept on staff. If the play-calling doesn’t improve against quality competition, then Marcus needs to show Rees the door at the end of the season. That, or hope a stupid AD offers him a HC gig or a stupid NFL team offers him a coaching position.

I hope CJ doesn’t reclassify. I don’t want him to be rushed/screwed up like JT Daniels was and bail out Tommy for whiffing in the 2023 class.

It is crazy that he was part of the deal for Freeman. One is not like the other.

This. As much as I'd like to see the offense so some different things, tonight was not on the play calling. ND doesn't have the personnel to have an elite offense.

They won't see a defense with this sort of talent until Clemson. Get Patterson 100% and it will help a great deal on the inside run game. A lot of posters think you just send Estime running to an A gap and you get Jerome Bettis results lol guys need to get a push, and they aren't going to get holes opened until the offense as a whole can make a defense respect things horizontally or vertically. Hence, Rees tried to do a lot of things with the outside run game and take shots on go routes.

Outnumbered? More like outplayed. We couldn't block #51 to save our lives.

Never thought Rees was worth a flip. People on this board talking him up like hes some kind of offensive genius but never have seen anything out of him except when playing a bunch of 2-3 stars in Ok St last year. Every game ND has played with the exception of tonights and the playoff games ND has had more talent on both sides of the ball yet the results are the same.

Hats off to the ND defense honestly holding OSU to 21. Rees' offense just isnt there.

But literally all of those are Rees’s fault. It’s the QB room he recruited and coached up. It was his game plan and play calls.

He has now been destroyed in the second half two games in a row. Not only that, the offense has looked downright terrible in the second half if both games.

Sean McVay can have him.

Rees called a very good game in first half. In second half he should have stayed with the short, quick pass game in place of run game used in the first half. O-line lost this game, especially in second half. They were slow off the ball and unable to pick up stunts. Defense played great most of the game. But against a team like that the offense cannot punt 4x in a row in second half and expect the D to stand. If you told me before game that ND would only give up 21 I would have guessed they would have won.

Yep. I can forgive a lot of stuff. Like weird game plans to cover our weaknesses. I get it, having a bad line wrecks the playbook. But those three straight runs are not defensible in that situation.

I'm just so tired of ND looking clueless on offense anytime they play anyone with Jimmies and Joes that are as good or better than ND's.

Do slants not work in football anymore? Instead let’s just set ourselves up for obvious passing downs with 3 &10s all night and wonder why we are getting blitzed! Ugh so pissed right now!

So long as Rees is the OC, the Kelly legacy lives on.
That was the dumbest part of this whole hiring process with Marcus that and Notre Dame hired and retained his offensive coordinator. Freeman should’ve been allowed to make that decision. The whole thing is a mess and now we can safely say that Reese it’s not any greater without Kelly.

That drive cost us the game . . . You could see it when it happened. It looked so bad at such a key moment.

You were happy with the play calling in the red zone on the 1st drive?

If Salerno doesn't make a circus catch we lose by 18.

He had one good play call on the fake toss PA.
That isn't a good first half thats a blind squirrel finding a nut.

Just wait until Tommy gets CJ to reclassify and ruin his development, not to mention the mediocre play-calling.

I just don't think he called a bad game. I don't know why that means I'll never blame Rees...

I think a lot of fans blame playcalling as an easy out. There, I said it.

Would I do things differently? Sure. I'd been wondering for a few years why Rees doesn't roll the pocket and give the QB easier reads. Still not seeing any slant routes, sorta odd.

Some plays I think could be staples in an ND offenses (screens, slants, read options) would be totally ineffective against a defense that is so much more athletic that the offense that they can play man coverage, bring safeties up, and not really blitz that much. At the end of the day the OSU defense has much better athletes that ND's offense and that talent mismatch limits what an offensive coordinator can do.

I guess I just don't see the limiting factors from tonight being an issue in 10/12 games this season.

I’m more concerned about the lack of talent on offense, which he (and the coaches who have left) are all accountable for, than his play calling. I don’t know what you are supposed to do when your OL can’t block anyone and you have a completely inexperienced QB who isn’t a pocket passer and you don’t have playmakers on offense so you are running Matt freaking Salerno out there for your deep shots.

This team is just bereft of talent sans a few studs like Mayer and Alt, and more importantly it has no identity.
