And rally it was 4th of July weekend. Without getting into the whole constitutionality of DUI check points.
Would you have been as upset about being pulled over for a check point?

Why do you think I was stone-cold sober! Fourth of july weekend on the lake, you know there are going to be more cops than normal. No, because checkpoints stop everyone, not just those 'suspected' or those driving their parents' boats worth the cops salary or more.

I don't think I've seen this video posted. If it is, apologies and mods can remove. It's a news report from SB about the incident.

Rees now an underdog...

Rees now an underdog...

Great.

Now I have to pull for the kid.

What kind of Cubs/Notre Dame fan would I be?

A realistic one? Meh.

There is definitively no love lost between ND students and the SBPD. That being said I think the cops have gone a long way in this recent year to solve the solution better. I have now heard of two parties that the cops showed up at to respond to a noise complaint. They simply just asked that the noise level be brought down. At another party about a mile off campus police showed up but to actually direct traffic from the taxis in the area rather than arresting anyone. I had a friend at the party last night, and from the way I understand it, the cops were not looking to arrest anyone, but were just trying to quite it down and break it up.

You seem really hung up on the boat worth more than the cops salary thing.
Could it be just maybe that you had the same type of attitude with the cop and that's why he was a dick with you and your friends?
Either way I think we get it.
Some cops can be dicks.
I also get the fact that they deal with the general public far more often than we do.
And I'm sure none of us have had a bad day or taken a bad mood into work with us.
Cops come out in force to shut down a party. I'm sure though that has nothing to do with the fact that there will be a group of people, often times with alcohol involved and no one in the history of the world has been known to get beer muscles.

Guys honestly I get it a QB who is the incumbent starter and had a chance to start this year for our favorite team was arrested. Let's let the facts come out. Tommy will be charged as an adult if he is charged at all and the facts will become public record.
Tommy will be allowed to present his defense.
Then the University will decide on his fate as a student.
None of us as far as I know has any kind of sway to either save or expel him.
Let's just let the situation play out and keep track of it instead of getting all riled up about something someone said on an internet message board.

The water-cops have the reputation for harassing the younger crowd with nice toys. And the cop was all hung up on that issue as well. Kept asking who's boat is that, even said "that's a good chunk of change right there" to me. I'm sorry, what does that have to do with the situation at all? Nothing.

Haters gonna Hate.

Like I said doesn't matter either way to me.
But according to this report the felony charge has been dropped.

Calabrese said "My people are going to get you." to the cops; what does that mean?

Shows the mindset of many ND students.

From 2002-2009, I never met a single Notre Dame student who had the power to actually back such a statement up. I knew a couple who might make a threat like that, but there are douche bags everywhere.

Seems you have a serious axe to grind against ND's student body.

If in fact he did that, it was dumb and he will be punished. Your first two comments on the subject seem to indicate your priorities are more about the impact on the team than the impact on Tommy, which I disagree with. We can agree to look at this differently, yes?

I was really just trying to find a good side to the situation.

I'm a glass half full kind of guy

I'd also like to add that about 7 yrs ago there was a little hole in the wall in Granger here called the Sports Page. Great place to be, loud music, cheap drinks, heavy handed bar tenders...anyway one night we were down there and a few basketball players were too celebrating a birthday (they were 21 as everyone had to be who walked in the door). My friend walked past a group of men who were congregated around the bathroom, and one man slapped her on the butt. She turned around and pushed him, and he shoved her back. One of the players (who was pretty well known) stood up, and told the guys to knock it off. We decided to leave, those basketball players walked us to our vehicle (we had a DD don't worry) and here come the *** slappers starting crap with the bball players who were trying to walk away. Cops were called, the car window was busted on my sober friends car, and when the cops got there, they separated us, grabbed one of the players by the back of the neck and slammed him onto the trunk of the squad car and cuffed him. After an hour of telling the cops what really happened they finally let the athletes go, and nothing happened to the *** slappers. The police here LOVE them an opportunity to slam a ND athlete. They LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Because South Bend hates ND.

But did you get phone numbers? Pics or it didn't happen. And was Zack one of the bball players?

Sadly, they're all too real for the undergrads whose lives they ruin. You can read about this pathetic gestapo here.

I'm skeptical, as countries in which the legal age is 18 don't have higher rates of DUI.

Not defending Tommy at all. He choose to run and got caught. If he'd just stayed put, this would be a mole hill instead of a mountain.

I don't expect cops to stop handing out MIPs, either, but the frequency with which off-campus parties are raided in South Bend isn't coincidental.

Legal age in Ontario is 19. There is no instance of a rise in accidents or DUIs, and here they can charge you at .05.

That's the way it is in many (all?) European countries as well.

Very lenient on ages for drinking, absolutely no tolerance for drinking, at all, and driving.

Why is there such a division between the population of South Bend and the student population of Notre Dame? I was always under the impression that it was a somewhat harmonious existence.

Not defending Tommy or Carlo here, but you have several people jet from a party and you run down the athletes as oppose to the average student? Then you feel it necessary to tackle them? Seems a little excessive for a possible case of underage drinking, I dunno. Never saw a cop take a kid down for underage drinking when I was in college (Not that long ago). In the end justice was served though, and Tommy is going to have some work ahead of him.

I heard that the four guys who got away were Golson, Hendrix, Kiel and Dayne Crist (who is not underage but was confused by the coverage and panicked)...THAT is how the qb controversy will be settled.

Well, look at it this way. I was a Pre-Med major. If you have an arrest, there is no way you can get into med school. Same story for Pre-law and many others. So I would book it as soon as I saw flashing lights. There was one party where I, and many others, jumped off of a second-floor apartment balcony to avoid the cops. There is no way I would have gone down without a fight. No matter what, you do whatever it takes to get away. I've jumped off of balconies, jumped fences, and sprinted a mile and a half and jumped into the back of a pickup to avoid the cops. I don't believe anything cops say. Their claim of "battery" was probably Rees flailing after they pepper sprayed the hell out of him. Who knows why or when they pepper sprayed him? Maybe he pepper sprayed him just for running. I wouldn't put it past the SBPD. The cop can say whatever he wants and nobody in the community or the news will question him. I hope he got that copper good.

Other than going 10-2 this upcoming season, this was the best way Rees could ever manage to get the student body united behind him.

Hmmm...a drunken cop evading doctor...just what I want operating on me. Do you happen to have any "people" that can "get" anyone who might cross you?
