In almost 40 years of Iris football this takes the cake.No offense, defence, ect, ect, ect.Maybe we should ease up on the schedule,ie,play C Mich,Indiana,Tulsa,So.Miss at the start of the season. In my opion if we dont loosen up the admission standards a bit and quit playing this scheduie we are never going to win a nc,we had might as well join the Ivy League or get use to 7 win seasons and trips to El Paso or Shreveport for bowl games.

Thanks for your perspective. Next time can you try putting it in a reply to an existing thread instead of creating a whole new one?

Well, You are right this is bad! However, if Notre Dame can't recruit better players it's not going to get better. The current players are to small and to slow to play with the top teams in the country. Normally I don't bash the coach, but he just needs to recruit better players, especially lineman!

The guys that Weis has recruited - linemen and otherwise - are FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES. (Oh, and some of them are highschoolers, too.) There was NO CHANCE they were going to come and excel right away on a team where they made up almost the entire talent base. Weis's recruiting has been absolutely excellent so far; it's just going to take a bit more time to see the results of that.

You've got to give them a chance. Everyone knew this year wasn't going to be good. There's a lot of work to be done, and I firmly believe that CW will kick some butt and take names.

He is a great recruiter of skill positions like QB and reciever, but the lines on both sides are a problem. I knew it wouldn't be good this year, but I didn't think it would be this bad.

Go take a look at Weis's recruiting. He's done plenty well along the offensive line, and while the d-line has given him problems in past years he's picked up TONS of guys at DT and DE this year. Moreover, those are obviously the positions at which freshmen and sophomores are going to have the hardest time making real contributions: trust me, the lack of strength, skill, and depth we're seeing in the trenches this year is Willingham's fault, not Weis's.

Patience is a virtue which none of us seem to have right now when our beloved IRISH are 0-3. Hopefully we will get better over the course of the season. We have all waited for football season to get here and I for one, couldn't even watch the whole game yesterday.

Charlie needs to work on the O line to keep jimmy from being injured. At this point in the game the line needs the most improvement.

I managed to suffer through the whole thing until Sharpley through the pick. The point about improvement is what kills me: I've said a bunch of times that I flat-out ENJOYED watching the PSU game, because we came out well, played hard, and showed some real improvement. This week we came out flat as heck, seemed to give up when the game started getting away from us, and looked, if anything, WORSE than we did against Georgia Tech. THAT'S what made yesterday's game so unwatchable.

We have some good-great line recruits, and for the most part, collectively its the biggest bunch of OL guys ever at ND. Its the coaching. ND has the #1 recruiting class lined up for next year, admissions standards aren't the problem.

How is this Willinghams fault? Weis had decent seasons these past 2 years and now that the wheels have FALLEN off your going to throw Willingham under the bus. These are Charlies kids and from the looks of it. They aint gettin any better as the year goes on..

I can't believe people are actually still trying to blame Willingham for this disaster! What a cop out.

It's - partly, mind you - Willingham's fault because he brought in TWO offensive (ha!) linemen in three years, and because his second and third recruiting classes, which currently make up our junior and senior classes, SUCKED, and so on. Many of the guys on the field this year definitely have been Weis's guys, but that's just a testament to the awfulness of Willingham's recruiting. It's positively stupid, though, to say that Weis's guys aren't getting better - they're really young, and you have to be more patient than that.

I'm not giving Weis a free pass at all (hence the "partly" above) - I'm just saying that he got dealt a half-deck and now he's trying to dig out from that. You try getting a bunch of freshmen and sophomores seeing their first ever meaningful playing time in college to perform at a high level right away.

And I can't believe the Weis-haters are so irrational as to disbelieve that this could be part of the story. What an ass.

Just think, guys like Zorich, Ricky Waters, probably would have never made it in here under the current admission policy. Kids need a chance to excel. Not saying become a Miami but maybe its time to lighten up. ND can still be a great place of learning.

The biggest problem with this suggestion is not so much the "lowering of standards" in terms of the GPA and SAT numbers required for ADMISSION, but the way it would require standards to be lowered IN THE CLASSROOM. Unless you want to see ND ushering football players into BS majors, eliminating course requirements (Calculus, anyone?) or coming up with "creative" ways to fill them, letting kids take more than five years to finish their coursework, and so on. What ND looks for is kids who, even if it is hard and they end up just getting by, have the right attitude to put in the work necessary to go through four years of courses in pretty much the same way as a normal Notre Dame student. (This is not to say they aren't shown how to cut ANY corners, just that there is much less of this than at most other schools.) The requirements to be admitted are already MUCH lower for athletes than non-athletes, and to be honest I'm fine with that (strikes me as a good way to help kids who are often from poorer backgrounds get a top-notch education), but to give them a free pass when they're AT the university would be a huge problem. (Moreover, it seems to me to speak well to the character of the kids you're fielding if they're willing to buckle down in the classroom.)

That might be the most idiotic thing ever typed. yes its sarcastic and still a stupid post. and we have a defense but wen they are on the field 75 percent of the time they tire and fade

I agree with you that the "D" has been tired. But actually time of possession hasn't been the problem: the first two games we were right at 50%, and in this game it was only 33:14 to 26:46. The real issue here is depth, not time spent on the field. But your general point is right on.

As I was going thru the tread I too saw hat the worst points came from 1 post guys that are also new to the board and was hoping someone else would point it out...great pick up Clearwall!

Also, screw the admissions argument...I went to Michigan State and why I love the school (and the direction the new coach is headed in) the thing I hated most was having almost 1/3 be phys ed or communications majors...

I am proud of ND's tradition of giving the players an education...and saddened that Demetrius Jones would choose to throw away a free ND degree for the hope of starting at NIU for two years and hoping for a CFL job.

It isn't Ty's fault, Thats to easy of a road to go down. Putrid .............. that's to negative for a group composed of mostly freshman and sophmors. Yeah this the worst start. But if I'm gonna bleed down here amongst UGA and G. Tech fans.................I'll bleed Blue and Gold.........GO IRISH !!!

They have thrown the term Rebuild around a bit this year for ND and Mich.............Rebuilding is for training camps. Well as coach Holtz you to say........." Any given saturday"Our destiny could change this weekend. Keep up the team spirit.

It's no cop out. He left us in the crapper with zero talent on the OLine and it's coming back to bite us.

Sorry guys, I didn't play football...just watch lots and lots. We use the youth and experience excuse for this team, and although the recruiting by Ty was poor his last 2 years, why can't some of these young players step up and make plays if they are really the star recruits they were made out to be in high school?

USC is starting a true freshman at center. Redshirt freshman QB and RB at OU. To me, our defense was the bigger concern this season, and they have played with more heart than the offense. Can any of these O-linemen make a play? Have you seen AA turn a corner on a play yet?

I hate being a negative nancy here, I love our team. But I just saw Duke end the nation's longest losing streak, and I'm shi**ing bricks. 0-12 would throw this program into the stone age. We'd be back to watching dancing rockettes, TRYING to create a new shift to revolutionize the world of college football.

I have seen no heart from this team. The blurbs we get from our on-campus posters leads me to believe this team has given up. I'm afraid this training camp mentality is going to divide this team, and build some internal resentment towards Weis. We can say those that aren't on board can take a hike, but we need to field a team, y'all. I remember talking to some players during coach Holtz's last season in '96. They were ready for coach to leave, some have given up on him, and were looking forward to that new offense with Boob Davie. One 7-6 season later, this team was on its way to a decade of mediocrity.

I love coach Weis. I love his attitude, I love what he has given this program the last 2 seasons. I will live with 5-7, 4-8 this year if we can get the attitude pointed in the right direction. Even listening to the sound bites from the upperclassmen, they seem to respect Weis, but they don't seem sold on his philosophy. If his leaders on the field don't buy in, this team will make no strides this year, or in the years to come.

LET'S GET FIRED UP IRISH! BEAT THE SPARTANS!!!

I agree the lack of heart is what was the hardest thing to watch Saturday...the OL is the worst I have EVER seen at Notre Dame. There is talent there so I do not know if it is coaching or if these players are just not strong enough. It looks like it all goes back to strength and conditioning for the O-line...it has looked like we have been out weighed along the line by 50 pounds every week but we have been close to the same size. Is it time for a new O-line coach and/or strength and conditioning coach?

Part of the lack of heart your seeing from this team is that no one is feeding from another. Someone said it in a post before the PSU game. A defense needs to feed from an offense. An offense needs to feed from special teams and so on.

The defense is taking the field knowing that the offense is not going to do anything to help them. When I played high school ball, our offense was much like N.D. offense. unproductive at the least. And for the first few games we played hard and did well until about the middle of the 3rd and we would be exhausted. Eventually, after a few games we weren't even looking or hoping for the offense to help us any and that's when we started losing some games pretty bad. (michigan game)

Football is just as much a mental game as it is a physical one. These players have no heart because 1)The offense hasn't done anything so far this year, and the defense is tired of watching the offense go three and out. I know exactly how this defense feels. and by half time your just ready to go home. On the other hand, when this offense gets some production and starts having 8 or 10 play drives and scoring you will see a new breath of life come into this team. We just haven't had that jump start yet this year. But it will happen and they will look like the FIGHTING IRISH when it does!
