Interested to see how Tony Vitiello does at SF. Can’t think of too many college HC who took an MLB managers job w/o being an assistant first.
I believe I've read he's the very first to ever make that leap. I'm also curious, that will be an interesting situation.

I'm all for trying something new. Nothing worse than seeing the same retreads who have failed in multiple locations appearing in a new city expecting different results. The Giants biggest problem has been getting players to want to play there. Hitters don't want to go there because power numbers disappear there (unless you are a BALCO client), and pitchers don't want to face the Dodger and Padre lineups a lot.

I like this more than the recent trend of just hiring the most recently retired catcher or scrappy utility guy. Or I guess first ballot inner circle HOFer if Pujols gets hired lol.

I think there are a lot of guys out there who have put in the time and deserve their first shot at an MLB managing gig. I'm all for second chances, BTW, but third and fourth it starts to get a bit too recycled for my taste.

Some guys who have yet to manage in the Majors and should hopefully get a shot.

Ryan Flaherty: Chicago Cubs bench coach.
Kai Correa: Cleveland Guardians coach.
Craig Albernaz: Cleveland Guardians coach.
Vance Wilson: Kansas City Royals third-base coach.
George Lombard: Detroit Tigers bench coach.

Thank you for omitting Chris Fetter from your short list, I hope most others will follow your example

Lombard is said to be on the Braves short list

I believe this is going to end bad. He isn’t going to make it if he only has college coaches. I can’t imagine he has that connections with big league assistants.

This season is a lot longer so his cocaine high celebrating after a win is going to get exhausting and rub a lot of people wrong.

Dick Howser is the only one. He was at Florida State in 1979 before becoming the manager of the Yankees in 1980.
LOL. Steinbrenner fired him after a 100+ win season. They lost in the ALCS to Kansas City.

Then KC hired Howser after that season. World Series winner in 1985

Lombard came up in the Braves organization. I believe he was a 1st round pick. His son is a big prospect in Yankees organization. I got to meet him back in 2018 when the Dodgers were visiting STL. He was LA’s 1B coach at the time. Very impressive individual. I believe he was fluent in Spanish.

Blue Jays will win b/c they do what all the analytics say is no longer important. They hit for average. They don’t strike out. Kudos to them. Helluva lineup.

Always hated the Yankees growing up but couldn’t help but love Donnie Baseball. To me, he was the 1B version of George Brett but sadly his career was derailed by that bad back.
