Gusty win. OL played relatively well given their lack of experience and the environment. Riley is tough gritty QB; but unless he improves his downfield passing, he will not last the season. Love and Price are terribly underrated. Both have elite speed and are one missed tackle/bad angle away from scoring. Such a capacity should open up the passing game, but alas Riley at the moment is not up to par in the passing game.

Defensively, the secondary is championship caliber...unfortunately the front seven is not. We are undersized on the DL and lack a premier pass rusher. It was nice to see our LBs have the capacity to chase down players.

Coaching. Freeman's fourth down calls were ill advised. In a close game, field position can be the difference between a win/loss. We were fortunate but it was an unnecessary risk.

The refs made some calls that kept A&M in the game. The A&M TD drive was nearly all penalties that were 50/50.

I think this team will be fun to watch. Championship...no. We may qualify for the playoffs, but we will be competing with semi pro teams that are not salary cap restrained.

Any more regarding Faison? Obviously, he got rolled up, but is it broken?
From Freeman transcript - “I don’t know much — he said it was an ankle,” Freeman said. “(Faison) said, ‘Coach, I’m good. I’m done for this game, but I’m good. So, I have confidence he’ll be back. I don’t know what the timetable is.”

I rewatched the second half again this morning. The OL, as a unit, was pretty damn good, all things considered. Knapp and Wagner were great on the edges and Craig (besides a couple poor snaps and that false snap) and Schrauth were quietly solid. Obviously Sam’s struggles were noted, but he had three really key blocks on the TD drive.

For a unit with six career starts coming into the game (and I feel like at least 4 of those were Craig), they get a solid B- from me. Wagner probably would grade out at about a 90 for the highest on the unit and Sam maybe a 70ish for the lowest.

They passed a huge test.
Here’s the cool thing:
1. This will likely be the worst they will play all year.
2. This will likely be the best DL they see all year.

Postgame Thoughts:
1) This was a MUST win game and they took out the biggest difference for A&M- their crowd.
2) Love & Price are going to be a headache for opposing defenses.
3) Our LB's are going to be a headache for opposing offenses.
4) The o-line is going to be a work in progress, to go in this environment with this line they got it done when they needed to.
5) Beau Collins was a nice surprise on offense.
6) Adon Shuler was a nice surprise on defense.
7) Jeter 3-3, enough said.
8) Watching Freeman celebrate is awesome, his love for the university, the football program and his players reminds me of Lou.
9) This defense is going to be special.
10) Leonard/Denbrock are just warming up.

On a personal note this was a tough week for my wife and I. We found out that our 16 yr. old Golden Retriever, Rudy has cancer and we are putting him down. This win was special, as it will be his last ND game.

Go Irish!!

If you think that kid from a&m is a top prospect then you need to watch more football. He was injured all of last year and played minimal time the year before. Just because Herbie says he’s a top prospect doesn’t make it true.
Lots of people said first rounder
Injury prone yes
Numbers had him pretty good as well
2022 8 tds 0 int QBR 132.2
2023 8 td 2 int QBR 156.8

I’m not going to downplay that defense performance last night. No where to go with the ball last night. Secondary might be best to ever where the gold helmet

Disagree on 1… due to our offense struggling their crowd was in it the entire time.. we had a chance to take them out of it third quarter and did not.

Collins was said all fall to be out top wr

And shuler beat out a solid safety

Good surprise for me was no big busts by our inexperienced lbs, and our oline might have wore down the A&M dline

Amazing you got 16 years out of your golden. We have 2 golden retrievers. They are the best. Sorry to hear you will have to put him down. Even though you got a lot of time with him it’s never easy! So many amazing memories I’m sure!

We eventually took their crowd out- the Love TD run let the air out of the balloon.

Happy for Collins/Shuler- question for Collins is can he be our #1 WR?

Good point about the inexperience LB's, I loved how Golden used them.

Thanks about our Golden, we are blessed that we got 16 years, I agree they are the best as I am sure you've got many memories with your 2.

I would agree that the defense was lights out and I’m sure a new OC had something to do with his performance also but I just don’t see what others are seeing I guess.

Sorry about your dog. We just had to put our 13 year old Cocker spaniel, Rockne, down last week. Think that's why I was extra shit faced for this game since he wasn't on the floor next to me

Last night was the first game for my dog Lulu (I call her Lou for short, you can imagine why). She had never seen me be so loud, clapping, yelling, etc., before so she was freaking out. I hope by the end of the season she’ll adjust.

I’m sorry to all who have lost their dogs. I can only imagine that pain right now, and I’ve only had my dog for 4 months, and it would be excruciating. God bless you guys.

Just rewatched the game. This finally feels like a team that had taken on the attitude of their coach, from top to bottom. Played with swagger but not out of control. I said it earlier but this used to be a program that would flinch in those moments.

Apropos of nothing, so sorry about your buddy Rudy. The biggest tragedy with bringing pets into our lives is that we're almost guaranteed to outlive them.

Glad that Rudy saw the Irish get the W on his last ND game. He'll keep watching on the other side of the rainbow road because his Dad raised him right.

A game plan as old as time when on the road, night game, inexperienced OL.

Attended. Unbelievably loud. Great environment. Irish did what they had to do. Price's run was a killer, and the final TD drive was such a clincher. So many benefits for the team going forward, having come and won in that environment against a decent team. A&M fans were very courteous and welcoming where I was sitting.

Will be up for NIU next week.

Just curious. Was Weigman not seeing open receivers or were they as locked up as they looked on tv?

We had one second half bust but he was too nervous to wait for easy big gain to happen

Flip side… first half nd may have scored on pas to ford that Riley short hoped because A&M busted the coverage

I saw more A&M busts that we missed the nd busts.
