Defense was great, especially in coverage. Only thing I saw that future opponents may be able to exploit is the DT play. Cross and Mills were out as much as they were in and Hinish and Onye (especially Onye) are clearly not as good as Cross and Mills. They need to be out there 65% of the snaps or more vs a good team. Even with them we lack the hefty run plugger in the middle that discourages inside run plays.

LB play can compensate if we choose to go that route. Bowen looks like run stuffer deluxe at ILB.
That’s a good point you make but I also think it was strategic to keep our guys fresh in the heat. There was a drive where I commented our guys were getting swallowed up but they stood tall against some giant humans

Really wish Freeman went on an expletive filled rant about the officials/replay. The other negatives from the game can be corrected (pre snap penalties, o-line, downfield passing). But when the officials were that blatantly bad, something needs to be done.

Super happy that Freeman went for it on those two 4th-and-shorts to start the 2nd half. Even if we got hosed on the spot on the 2nd one...

It was ballsy that’s for sure. He showed trust in the youngster early in the season.

Never thought we’d get near 200 yds rushing especially after the first half when it seemed Denbrock was allergic to running the ball.

Our passing game needs a lot of work

I can’t believe the clown on the broadcast they call in for analysis on replays. He was HORRIBLE. He tried arguing it was clear Collins didn’t catch the ball on the game winning drive. There was NOTHING that showed that.

I'm so glad I was wrong in my prediction. I thought our youth on the o line would cost us.

Great win!

He was extremely animated with the referees all game long. He is just doing it during tv timeouts. He lit them up during commercial after the pass interference call on Gray.

They’re not all gonna be pretty, the left side of the OL had a rough night and the team as a whole had too many penalties. Leonard also was realllllly rough until towards the end of the game. Missed a lot of wide open guys and didn’t display a ton of touch.

But big positives:
-The defense is as advertised.
-Right side of the OL played very consistent all night.
-RBs made big plays when it mattered.
-WRs were pretty darn good when given the opportunity to make a play on the ball. They also consistently got open most of the night and ran way better routes than last year.
-Consistent field goal kicking.

Forward looking they just gotta get the left side of the OL figured out over the course of the season, hopefully by Louisville it’s passable.
I will say that all the big runs tonight did happen on the left side. But points still valid

I rewatched the second half again this morning. The OL, as a unit, was pretty damn good, all things considered. Knapp and Wagner were great on the edges and Craig (besides a couple poor snaps and that false snap) and Schrauth were quietly solid. Obviously Sam’s struggles were noted, but he had three really key blocks on the TD drive.

For a unit with six career starts coming into the game (and I feel like at least 4 of those were Craig), they get a solid B- from me. Wagner probably would grade out at about a 90 for the highest on the unit and Sam maybe a 70ish for the lowest.

They passed a huge test.

Of the six starts last season both Schrauth & Craig had three apiece.

agreed. My beer-fueled self was spewing expletives at his faceless ass when he was making his case. I don’t think he was that adamant that Leonard easily got the 4th & inches either. This despite both Herbie & Fowler stating the obvious. Film don’t lie

I know it was an ACC crew but who had the replay responsibilities?

Not sure why all the negative reactions. RL was all over the place for 3.5 quarters and it’s not so much a jab at him but a fact that he only hit a couple passes over 10 yards. It was not a solid game by him through the air.
If you led with “not a solid game” instead of “horrible” then there wouldn’t be as many negative comments. Kid played with heart and guts.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here but he single handedly:
-Blew a protection so Leonard got hit when he could've dumped the ball off to Price for a TD
-Blew another protection that killed a drive
-Got beat horribly bad on two other plays to blow them up
-Had a key false start in the second half that helped kill a drive

That's off the top of my head, I dunno if it's actually correct, but it's what I remember from the live watch.
I really need an explanation on why Pendleton on 2 separate occasions let a D lineman blow thru untouched, what protection calls for that?

Attended. Unbelievably loud. Great environment. Irish did what they had to do. Price's run was a killer, and the final TD drive was such a clincher. So many benefits for the team going forward, having come and won in that environment against a decent team. A&M fans were very courteous and welcoming where I was sitting.

Will be up for NIU next week.

Wtf was he looking at with the Beau Collins catch? “I think the ball moved a mm which would lead me to say no catch” like what are we even doing?
I almost never buy into the “he hates ND” narrative but that guy hates ND.

Those were head scratchers. He just needed to forget about the double team and pick up the man.
