Oh is that all

Oh is that all

Seriously, this is not a good defense right now, but it is a defense that should improve as it gets experience in the system and the young players mature.

We are a DE, OLB(x2) and Free Safety away from being a really really good D. I have been impressed with Diaco.....

Take into consideration our front-loaded schedule vs. everyone else's cupcake scheduling. You'll see a drastic difference after we get our Western Michigan, Tulsa, and Army games done with.

This is ND, not the PAC-10. I expect this team to be able to defend even the hard part of the schedule with success. Realistically, I know they are not there yet. But that is the standard that I judge them by.

I don't disagree with that, but we don't have last year's offense. And making comparisons like that doesn't change the fact that this year's defense is pretty mediocre. I'm not being dismissive of the gains that they have made, I'm just being realistic. Here are the numbers:

Total Defense: 89th
Scoring Defense: 70th
Passing Defense: 96th
Rushing Defense: 68th

They are in the bottom half of D-IA in almost every major defensive statistical category. They are getting better, but they still are just mediocre. I'm optimistic about the future, but they are more than one or two players away from being a very good defense.

...yea, but everyone else in the country just started playing someone other than DI AA teams...ie they are now into their conference schedules...our three loses were against teams in the top 25...who else has 3 top 25 teams and NO IAA games thus far?

We are heading into the easier part of our schedule...I can only compare by what I see...my belief is these guys are a top 50 defense right now, and getting better.

Lets see where they end up...when all the sceduling inequities level out...I'm saying 35-40 on average....maybe better.

I thought these guys would be the same as last years D in terms of numbers, but would get more hype...I think I was wrong. I think these guys are already better, and will have better numbers than last years D.

This defense is not bad at all, and it is only getting better. Looking forward to next year with the additional talent we will have and the more depth at key positions.

I totally agree - we have a good defense this year, not great or bad-arse but with what looks like an awesome recruiting list coming in for next year, I think we jump to bad-arse. There will be those from this year competing against some solid recruits for position and folks will be making plays just to keep their starting position.

Thing is, those numbers don't just put us below the Ohio States and Wisconsins of the world, who have been playing those 1-AA cupcakes. They also include the 1-AA cupcakes that have been getting feasted on.

I agree our numbers will improve, and I agree that this D looks better and better. It has been huge for us a few times already (overtime vs Michigan St.) However, there's a long way to go before it's going to strike fear in anybody's hearts.

I really don't think so bro -- To be truthfully honest with you, I think Kelly is working more on getting the defense built. I say this because of the recruiting we are doing and the job the defense is doing this year compared to the last 5 - 10 years. Because as we all know, when it boils down to it, the old saying - 'defense is what wins ball games' is what the Irish are working on. I know I can say I was tremendously surprised at the work of our defense. Some might say that it is because of Teo - but I have seen some solid open-field tackles and less arm-tackling going on this year so far than of those in the past few years.

If you really think about it, the past coaches have been working on the offensive side more than the other. I know Kelly is supposed to be another offensive guru as well but, I think he is getting the defensive side ready.

That's all they would have needed last year. Comparrison is stupid I know, but my thought is that if this team puts it all together, they will be incredible. We all go back and forth praising the offense and the defense and the special teams, but when we put all three facets together every week, we are going to be a force.

If you are talking about this year, with these players, then I would say "When we put all three phases together, we will be a good team. But we still won't be in the same class as Alabama, Ohio State, and maybe even Oregon." I think Kelly can get us to that level, but I don't think he has the personnel, this year, to do it.

Article is an extremely interesting read: thank you Terry. If the author knows what he is talking about, it points out somethings that I thought I was seeing, and others that are a surprise and disappointment. I believed that this defense was better than a lot of people were saying especially in the secondary--this fellow does too, and lays the major part of our failures on the front seven, particularly the DEs and the OLBs.

He paints a picture that I believe: our secondary will be very good, if they get better assistance from the front seven, and Diaco can encourage them to get more aggressive on closing routes. He also states that several of our players lack sufficient strength--a big disappointment. The general vision is one of a team needing an near-entire overhaul in strength and conditioning, as well as simple matters of technique [even proper alignment].

The light that he sees has two components [which I also agree with]: 1). these guys should make a dramatic improvement because this staff is trying to take them in proper directions [and one partial season is too short to do it]. And 2). Kelly is trying to recruit the precisely correct kind of players to upgrade.

Well, most of that is good. The great disappointments were his assessments of the strength and understanding-of-position that both the DEs and OLBs lacked. Kapron Lewis-Moore seems the exception in his mind as the player at these spots who seems to be getting it now. The hopefulness in this story lies not in this season but the next. But can we hold the recruiting class this way??

I don't disagree with the whole article, but it falls flat on at least one point:

Notre Dame has been a relatively stout running team between the tackles. It started with the stellar play of Ian Williams and was enhanced by the physical play of sophomores Manti Te’o and Carlo Calabrese. Where Notre Dame has really struggled this year in the run game is with off-tackle and outside run plays.

I noted that the author made absolutely no mention of the Navy fullback rushing for 200+ yards. Is he really expecting me to believe that Navy's fullback gained 200+ yards, on mostly off-tackle and outside run plays? I admire his optomism, but I can't help but think that this article was written without much recognition of the true weaknesses of this defense.
