Notre Dame student dies in video tower collapse - ESPN

A Notre Dame student died Wednesday when a tower used to videotape Fighting Irish football practices toppled over as the team was practicing nearby.

The student, who was not identified, was filming practice for the athletic department from a hydraulic scissor lift when the incident occurred. The student later died at a hospital in South Bend.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss," Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the student's family and friends and our prayers and profound sympathies are with them during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of someone so young is a terrible shock and a great sadness. Our entire community shares in the family's grief."

Jenkins said the school is making grief counseling available to students.

The cause of the accident wasn't known, but winds in the area were gusting to 51 mph at the time, according to the National Weather Service. The video lift, which can be lowered or raised depending on needs, stretched across a nearby street.

It wasn't clear how close the players were to the tower at the time of the accident.

The Fighting Irish, who host Tulsa on Saturday, canceled post-practice interviews.

Holy ****. As a civil engineer and someone who has been on one of those... why the hell they were using it with 50+ mph wind gusts is beyond me.

Know when you shut your f***ing mouth.

Very sad incident. RIP.

First and foremost I change it. Secondly did you know the guy personally? If not get a grip. Do you cry when a little child dies of cancer in a 3rd world country?

Sir, you are wrong on this one.

Condolences to the family and the ND community.

I've had to work on top of planes and on lifts, and when it was 25mph we we're told to get off. No idea why he would be up there during 50mph winds.

my prayers are with the family. Deeply saddening

you dont need to know somebody personally to be sad or at least not be totally insensitive when he or she dies. that was totally uncalled for.

No I don't cry, but I do feel bad. And I feel very bad for the student killed in this awful accident.

Someone usually does my friend.... how insensitive can any one person be?????? I am glad you are banned.... who would want to be known to associate with someone who makes light of a tragedy in someone's life... I am ashamed to even reside in the same state as you....

Thoughts and prayers to the young man's family, friends, and ND family of students and faculty.......

God bless the young soul of a devout example of how deep the passion for ND football goes.

After our loss to Navy, this kid didn't give up hope. Unfortunately trying to help our young men succeed, they gave up their life.

Rest in peace young one. Soon, we will join you forever.

So sad. I can't believe they were up there when it was so windy. Horrible, horrible tragedy. Let's win a few games for this kid.

Wow, just read this. This really sucks. How much more of a wholesome, innocent, activity can a young person be involved in and then have this happen? I can't imagine how his or her family must feel. My prayers for this person and his or her family, of course.

Also, I always thought this DirtySecret guy was somewhat of a foul ball, and his comments today proved it beyond any doubt. I am ashamed that people with that mindset exist in the ND family. Hope his ban is permanent.

I will not justify Dirty's comments. But a veteran's attitude after only 18 posts and membership since September of 2010 hardly makes your understanding of Dirty's personality complete...

He has certainly not been his usual self lately. But I feel this is just as of late. His comment was a bad joke. A very poorly placed joke at a time of grief. Poor timing. Bad joke. Careless. Cold. Wrong.

But he has added in the past. I cannot judge him, lest I want to take on the same judgement. I will support our moderators. But, Dirty Secret: Come on man. WTF? You know better than that.

I haven't been my usual self lately. Losing sucks. We are better than this. Outplayed this year: yes. Outclassed: never. Us fans should live by that.

His ban is for 5 days. Those comments were completely uncalled for. This website exists to support the Notre Dame community - he did the exact opposite. I've been told by him that I will be negatively repped everyday because I'm a "biotch".

This tragedy deserves our condolences for the student and his family. Let's keep this thread about the situation at hand. We can debate about DS elsewhere.

Disturbing last two facebook status updates from Declan Sullivan:

"Gusts of wind up to 60mph well today will be fun at work... I guess I've lived long enough :-/"

"Holy **** holy **** this is terrifying"

He should not have been on the lift. It's absolutely irresponsible and a huge tragedy that easily could have been avoided.
