looks great... i'll prob. get it as I liked Oblivion... here is a question for the fantasy gamers though...

this is supposed to be the same world as oblivion right??? Why then in all these games (any fantasy rpg) do the world's change so drastically from one game to the next... shouldn't the cities from the previous games at worst be ruins now... yet for the most part each installment of these games has completely different world's that are supposedly the same places... always struck me... (I know I have no imagination)

Same world, different provinces of the Empire. Usually, the game is named after where it takes place (Morrowind was in Morrowind*, Skyrim will be in Skyrim.) Oblivion kind of broke from the pattern, as you were actually in Cyrodil. The whole continent is called Tamriel.

*Actually, Morrowind was in the Vvardenfell part of Morrowind, if you want to be really geeky about it.

k... but mnay other rpgs take place in the same world and such correct... meaning they don't use the elder scorlls idea of provinces to explain the differences away... and they still change pretty much everything right??? As my question was more general anyway

Gotchya--I don't really know the answer for other games... Zelda games tend to be blank slate or find creative ways to deal with the problem (in Wind Waker, you find that you're in the same world, only it's been flooded), Mass Effect maintains the same universe through the trilogy, and I haven't played games in series like FF so I couldn't answer you there.

I think most games tend to have you move (Fallout 3 was set in D.C., Fallout New Vegas was set in, well, Vegas.) A good RPG series will pay meticulous attention to the world it creates and the backstory of that world, so it would be surprising if there wasn't some continuity or explanation for events of past games.

Does that make sense?

Sure, I refuse to play Final Fantasy games but have watched many of my friends play those games enough to know that some occur in totally different worlds, while others occur in the same world... and they don't seem to carry over landmarks, cities or anything... just the name of the world... at last at times... like I said don't play them

the Dragon Warrior games kind of did the same thing... they named places the same thing but they were totally different and in different areas surrounded by different topography and everything... I've come across a few other RPGs like this as well (though thinking of the titles escapes me right now)... for someone who is so literal and likes reality based movies and games much more than fantasy, stuff like that hurts the appeal of a lot of prgs...

but I'm obviously in the minority, they are a popular genre... and I am looking forward to Skyrim, as I said, because Oblivion was great (I actually still play that game every now and then)

Nah, I kind of agree with you. It's lazy to use the same names in completely different contexts, unless there's a good reason why, especially if it's a story driven game, like most RPGs are. The only series that gets a pass from me for this is Zelda, partly because it's not really an RPG.

whos the virgin now!?? haha.

final fantasy games all are set in different worlds to my knowledge, except spinoff titles like final fantasy x-2 and final fantasy 7 crisis core.

A lot of the new titles pay homage to the old titles by naming certain things the same. for instance there is a person named Cid in every Final Fantasy ever, and some certain towns or citys are named after ones in previous games just to kind of reference the earlier titles.

Some games such as Suikoden are all set in the same world, i haven't played much suikoden so i wouldnt know how accurate they are with keeping the world the same.

then Final Fantasy is still stupid for having the same game have 20 plsu editions all in different worlds... so HA! :)

I freakin hate those games... they are basically NES gen game play with artsy graphics...

but honestly, many of my close friends WORSHIP FF games and state many take place in the same world... if not, then that's even more stupid imo.

yes, I'm bitter towards those games

its an age old discussion and no one really has an answer. the best description i found was this:

The games are merely connected by certain reoccuring elements, such as chocobos and similar names. Otherwise, the storylines differ and take place in different worlds. The only two FF games that are connected, excluding the FFX and FFVII sequels obviously, would be FF Tactics Advance and FFXII, which both take place in the world of Ivalice. Whether there will be any connection between the storylines is unknown to me.

I'll contact my friend Myron... believe me... if he can't give a def. answer on this no one on this planet can...

also, I stand by this... if they are always completely different then that is even more moronic than having it in the same world and changing everything... how is that a sequel or connection to the series??/

they're not necessarily sequels rather than another grand adventure worthy of the title Final Fantasy. and since there has been 14 previous final fantasies, they just add another to the pile.

call myron, you got a lot of hate towards FF, it seems unhealthy, anyways this thread was about the elder scrolls which is in the same world. so you should be ok with that.

lol... I do, must guys understand, you have a group of friends and they agree on most things, then there is one thing that each guy on his own disagrees with the others on and it just grows... mine (for years) has been most rpgs and especially final fantasy, my friends and I go back and forth on those games all the time... I'm convinced those games have ruined the country...

;)

Did any of you play the expansion for oblivion? It looked sick, but I never tried it... might have to make it my last game before I get Lost in the Woods.

I still haven't closed all the gates and finihed the final stages of the main story... I liked the grey fox and other side missions more than main story personally

I couldn't stand the gates- definitely agree that the side missions are the best. The assassin's guild series was easily my favorite, had a bit of a different feel from the rest of the game.

I've heard good things about the DLC, like I said, might have to give it a try.

just picked up my copy of skyrim now to install it onto my cpu

Lucky guy, I preordered from Amazon, but have to wait for UPS to bring it tomorrow. Good thing it is a three day weekend, I know I would have a difficult time going to class tomorrow.

I'm on 24 hour CQ and once I get off I'm walkin my happy *** down to Gamestop and picking up my pre-ordered game. Only thing that will get in the way of me and Skyrim today is Golden Tate. More on that in its own thread.
