I guess it really is a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World! He was priceless in Silent Movie, and History of the World, Part 1, too!

Almost no one here is old enough to remember the Sid Caesar/ Imogene Coca TV comedy show --- one of the most hilarious things ever. That was the age when it was necessary to be a true genius comic, as simple crudity was out.

A classic. Also love watching reruns of Burns and Allen.

I remember ... "Your Show of Shows".

Anyone wanting to know what live TV was like in the early 50's should watch the movie "My Favorite Year".

The top banana of that show was named "King" Kaiser as a parody of Sid Caesar's last name. Sid's dad got that name on Ellis Island courtesy of an Immigration Offical who couldn't pronounce his last name. Mel Brooks who wrote for Caesar in the 50's swapped the title for supreme leader in the Roman empire for the title that meant the same in the German empire.

The Jackie Gleason show is another great one. All of the acting done is one small sparse room with no props.

Competing with Sid Caesar for TV's funny man was Uncle Milty, Milton Berle and the Texaco Star Theatre.

Like Caesar, it wasn't Berle's show to start. It had rotating emcees till Berle. Caesar and Berle both turned variety shows into their show.

Here's the opening (and closing) to the Texaco Star Theatre. No trouble telling who the sponsor was. "We are the men of Texaco ... "

Then a few years later there was Dinah Shore singing for her sponsor on the Dinah Shore Chevy Show Commercials were obviously longer back then but one sponsor was footing the bill.

See the USA in your Chevrolet
America is asking you to call
Drive your Chevrolet through the USA
America's the greatest land of all

On a highway, or a road along the levee
Performance is sweeter
Nothing can beat her
Life is completer in a Chevy

So make a date today to see the USA
And see it in your Chevrolet

(Travelin' east, Travelin' west)
(Wherever you go Chevy service is best)
(Southward or north, near place or far)
(There's a Chevrolet dealer for your Chevrolet car)

So make a date today to see the USA
And see it in your Chevrolet

I remember watching the likes of Caesar, Berle, Gleason, Burns & Allen and Jack Benny. I didn't always get the jokes but it was good family time.

Your parents ever make you watch Laurence Welk? Thank you Buddy and Cissy! A-one, and a-two, and a-three . . .

"Ah, the lovely Lennon Sisters ... "

Sometimes my parents danced to the show, they were good. (And while they danced, I cringed.)

Goodnight, sleep tight, and pleasant dreams to you

Here's a wish and a prayer that every dream comes true

And now 'til we meet again

Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehn

Mine too!

I cannot believe the things that turn out to be universal! Or at least universal experiences of us poor American kids!
