I edited the OP to exclude talking about potential transfers as part of the roster. That player is still a member of the team, and we'll respect that until he decides to transfer, if he does at all. Thanks...

Normally I would not include something like that. But it seemed like the question was brought to him directly and he left the door open. I hope he does not transfer, but it gives you a better picture of where another scholarship is going to come from.

I'm not sure that I'm able to read the underpinnings of some of the personnel's eligibility [ex. the differences between theoretical years of eligibility left and the requirement that the staff grant a fifth year], but I think that this says that the maximum number of openings for 2014 would be around the low 20s.

In the greater scheme of things, there could be only one untouchable 5th year candidate depending upon contributions of others next year [Lombard] [As I said, I may easily be reading this wrongly; correct away]. If we end up with, say, "22" or so openings, this class will be "tight" as to skill players [in my opinion] as we will need 8 bigs [four on each side of the line], plus at least one kicker. Objections to taking four O-Linemen after the current Five Mountain group should be resisted, I think, with the knowledge that we are way down on O-Line and Elmer is EE-ing and might have to see the field in 2013, thus splitting him eligibility-wise from his buddies. The need to take four D-Line is, I believe undebatable. Fortunately, it appears that there will likely be four really good ones to get [Hayes already; Clark with a prayer; Trumbetti and McDowell and Smith and Evans; and who knows who else?].

If we get eight bigs and one versatile kicker [a lot to load up a frosh with], and Kelly takes his "QB Everyyear", we could have about a dozen openings for the wides, RBs, LBs, TEs, and DBs. That is 13 positions. Looking at RB, if Cam was let go, we still have four+ super prospects in house. Looking at D-Backfield, if you let Collingsworth and Wood go [rather mind-boggling to be talking like this], you are STILL overloaded with 14 players for four field positions --- this is against my character, but I am hoping selfishly for a few DBackfield transfers --- our "extra" talent back there would make a lot of schools deliriously happy.

Anyway, the point of it is that if we appropriately restock the lines, we should be VERY selective in who we accept as "skills". In my opinion, we might well go after two TEs that year too if Alex can't effectively continue. All this is very preliminary thinking, but this board is always ga-ga about loading up the bus with every fancy superswift in sight that I think such enthusiasm may need a lot of tapering back for the 2014 class.

Did I only count 9 graduating in 2013? Does that mean we have a VERY small recruiting class next year?

Sounds about right, Mike. I'd say 2 ILB's is probably a must (or at least 1 OLB, 1 ILB, and 1 "swing" guy) and 2 TE's is a must. At TE, it would probably overload at that position for 1 year, but the following year it could be that the roster sees 3TE's leaving the team, leaving the depth chart MH as an incoming JR, the 2 as incoming SO's and then a new FR at 4th on there. If Folston or Bryant redshirt this year, the staff could potentially skip a RB (assuming they aren't able to land one of the very top guys on their board).

If the staff can pick up either Prevot or Hollins, then I think they move Randolph inside.

Agreed. Here are the potential canidates:

Danny Spond
Anthony Rabasa
Ben Councell
Doug Randolph

I think Rabassa and Randolph move inside regardless, but none of them would shock me.

Utupo as well. Though it looks increasingly like Rabasa and Utupo are one-dimensional pass-rushers, so I don't know if moving them really helps anything.

Moving Spond seems strange, since he's the first functional DOLB we've produced. His ability to both cover and set the edge against the run made a huge difference this year.

Councell to ILB could work (maybe) if he's as athletic as claimed and the staff needs to make room for Jaylon. But playing ILB at 6'5''? He certainly doesn't fit the physical profile.

Moving Randolph inside if we pick up Prevot seems like the safest bet.

I happened to run into Randolph at the bookstore when I was in town for a game, and I think his height fits the ILB moreso than the CAT in our defense. I'm by no means an expert, but he struck me as a little short for that spot. He was pretty thickly built though, and I could see him being effective inside.

Thanks for that. I 'd bet money that Randolph goes inside.

Great points. I wonder if Rabassa is a little more athletic than Utopo, but I don't think he either is a potential starter at ILB.

I actually think Spond could be, but he would create a hole at DOG. I, for one, am confident that the hole could be filled by Councell and Smith, but that is one of those kind of things that fans are more likely to try than a coach.

Again, preliminary without full knowledge of 2013 roster, but I'm counting about 20 scholarships for 2014 [early assumptions= Tuitt goes NFL early but Lombard asked back for 5th; Collinsworth on the bubble; Fox on team for 2013 but must then go;maybe one rumored transfer; maybe one medical; several possible 5ths not recalled; neither Carlo nor Jamoris on team (their spots occupied though by "new" 2013 signees)].

If "20" turned out to be correct, then the need for 4Oline and 3Dline plus one more Dline since class is unusually rich with guys that are interested in ND, plus a punter/kicker specialist[?], would leave only 11 openings for the other 12 positions on the field.

There will still be a safety overload, and six returning running backs. I now sit back to cringe while listening to the normal IE discussion about us not really needing that many linemen and that this safety and this RB are too good to miss, so lets trim the lines back.

Wonder if any of Safties could bulk up to become a MLB. Heard Badger was a bigger hitter, that could be a good fit.

Moving a DOLB to ILB and then a S to DOLB is probably more likely.

I'm at work so I didn't have time to read all the posts, but is the DT position not a concern if not a priority next season with two seniors and a Junior? I hope we can land Eddie V.

It's a huge concern; top position of need. We lose both Schwenke and Nix after 2013, leaving only Springmann.

Exactly. D-line in general is a concern not just NT. Could lose a DE with Tuit being a potentially leaving early as he should be a high pick. So that just leaves Springmann, Day, Jones, and I Roshell for the D-Line when in reality you want a 6 man rotation for fatigue purposes.

Golson will be better next year but several players will need to progress so that he has weapons in the passing game. The one silver lining in the NCG was the performance of Davaris Daniels. That doesn't stop me from hoping for a 5* WR in every passing class though.

I read somewhere recently though that Prosise was back at the safety position. Can't recall the source. The discussion, what there was of it, seemed to be whether he could be a CB rather than whether he would be a DOG. We should wait till Spring ball on this one. Regardless, we're still overloaded bodies-wise at safety. And it is my opinion that we're overloaded there TALENT-wise as well. Please, after Redfield, NO MORE SAFETIES for a while!

You give me a Redfield; I'll give you a Collinsworth. You give me a Baratti; I'll give you a Farley. You give me a Shumate; I'll give you a Prosise. You give me a Hardy; I'll give you a Badger... and a Turner. And most of those guys haven't even used up any or much eligibility. I believe that Elliot can turn any of at least the first six into high quality DBacks, and I'll bet all of them.
