Legacy - take a look at the current Florida numbers. They are a train wreck this recruiting cycle.

Thanks. I am coming up with the four SEC teams I keep track of - Florida, Georgia, Alabama and LSU and will post soon.

A thumbnail:
Alabama - can draw from anywhere
Georgia and LSU - dominate their recruit-rich states
Florida - competes with in-state FSU and Miami, Georgia, Alabama, everyone else in the SEC, etc.

Of interest:
SEC recruiting: How Georgia and Florida do in retaining their state’s top prospects (Florida has one of the top twenty recruits from the state of Florida)

However, Florida, currently ranked (247) 11th in SEC team rankings, may improve with six recruits having Florida in their final group. (Slaton, J. Robinson, Conliffe, Nick Smith, Stewart, C. Henderson). (all four stars)

Scholarship Status Update, Part 3

Scholarship Status Update, Part 3

Now the four SEC schools. SEC recruiting rules limit classes to twenty-five, unless a team would fall short of eighty-five with those twenty-five.

Florida and Alabama were touched on a bit with previous posts.

Florida - 59 scholarship players on the current roster + 14 current enrollees/commits = 73.
Gators had four walkons with scholarships last year. Renew the four walkons that got scholarships last year, close with five bluechippers and still finish in the low 80s in total numbers. Five players were early entrants to the draft, a couple of transfers.... They even had a small class (10) of graduating Seniors. A huge injury problem in '16. Will some be career-ending? They are not recruiting well in Florida or making that up elsewhere in the South.

Targets: They could reasonably close with five blue chip players and an outside chance at a sixth, improving their current SEC ranking of eleventh. These include Tedarrell Slaton, James Robinson, Elijah Conliffe, Brad Stewart, Chris Henderson - all four stars. Nick Smith, OLB, has Florida as his favorite.

Update: Brad Stewart and Nick Smith commit to Florida, which improves to 8th in the SEC. (1/29/17)

Georgia - 64 scholarship players + 23 enrollees/verbals = 87. Georgia's class is currently third nationally with average ranking second only to Ohio State. Georgia has had seven January visits by uncommitted recruits and looks to add another CB, too.

Targets: They are favored with one more bluechipper (Markaviest Bryant, WDE) and are in it for two more (Aubrey Solomon, DT, and Nico Collins, S).

Alabama - 62 scholarship players + 25 enrollees/verbals = 87. They haven't finished. Six January visits by uncommitted recruits plus attempts to flip recruits committed to other SEC schools. Only four of the twenty-five in the '17 Class might go elsewhere (see above).

Targets: Alabama is favored with six more bluechippers (LaBryan Ray, SDE, Jarez Parks, WDE. Phidarian Matthis, DT, Christopher Henderson, CB, Devonta Smith, WR, and Henry Ruggs, WR). After NSD, Bama will probably be over ninety.

LSU - 63 scholarship players + 21 enrollees/verbals = 84. LSU is looking to close strong once again. LSU currently ranks sixth nationally, third in the SEC behind Alabama and Georgia.

Targets: They are among the favorites - or lead - for three LBs (Willie Gay, Tyler Taylor, Ellis Brooks), a DT (Marvin Wilson) and a S (Todd Harris), but could also add a DE (K'Lavon Chaisson, Markaviest Bryant or Justin Harris) if they come from behind. They would love to add Devonta Smith, WR, who is from La and are among his favs.

What is remarkable is that at least eighty percent of these uncommitted recruits' favorites come down to the same SEC schools. Michigan is in it for Aubrey Solomon. Ellis Brooks has three B10 schools in his top five. Two of LSU's recruits have visited TCU.

4 teams that could close the strongest on National Signing Day 2017 (USC, Nebraska, Miami, Florida)

Scholarship Counts after NSD

Scholarship Counts after NSD

Twelve teams (2 from each P5 conference except SEC - 4 teams)

Above 88
Florida State (ACC) - 69 returners + 23 signees = 92. (includes 7 potential 5th yrs)
--- three of the potential 5th yrs are not on the two deep.

TCU (Big 12) - 75 returnees + 21 signees = 91 (includes 16 potential 5th yrs)
--- five of the 16 potential 5th yrs are not on the two deep

At 86-88
Texas (Big 12) - 70 returnees + 18 signees = 88. (includes three potential 5th yrs)
--- two of those three are not on the two deep

Ohio State (Big 10) - 68 +20 = 88. (includes eight potential fifth years)
--- six of the eight are starters, one is second string, the eighth missed last year due to injury

Michigan (Big 10) - 57 returnees + 30 signees = 87. (includes seven potential 5th yrs)
--- all potential fifth years are on the two deep.
--- with ten RBs, will Ty Isaac have a scholarship or choose to be a graduate transfer?
--- will two fifth year FBs continue on scholarships

Alabama (SEC) - 60 returnees + 26 signees = 86. (Three potential 5th years, all starters)
--- Two walkons with scholarships for '16 are not counted.
--- 1 blueshirt and 1 grayshirt are not counted in the Class of '17

Georgia (SEC) - 60 returnees + 26 signees = 86. (includes seven potential 5th years)
--- Two of the seven potential 5th years are not listed on the two deep
--- Returnees do not include two walkons with scholarships in '16

LSU (SEC) - 63 +23 signees = 86. (includes six potential 5th years)
--- one of the six potential fifth years are not on the two deep
--- returnees count does not include walkon with scholarship in '16, a starting FB

Below 85
Florida (SEC) - 61 + 23 = 84. (includes five potential 5th years)
--- One signee is not included since he has yet to qualify

Stanford (Pac 12) - 70 + 14 = 84. (includes seven possible fifth yrs)

Clemson (ACC) - 70 + 14 = 82 (includes nine potential fifth yrs and two walkons with scholarships in '16)

USC - 59 + 23 = 82. (includes four potential fifth years)
--- does not include one walkon with scholarship in '16
--- one blueshirt and one grayshirt from the Class of '17 are not included

Brief notes
--- Three of the four SEC schools are at eight-six and the fourth is at eighty-four.
--- For TCU, dropping all five of the potential fifth years not on the depth charts puts them at eighty-six.
--- Clemson has the habit of continuing scholarships for walkons once they are given out.

--- That would leave Florida State with decisions to make to get into the eighty-six to eighty-five area.

2018 Scholarship Availability & Needs (18 Stripes)

2018 Scholarship Availability & Needs

As you know, recruiting never stops. As soon as the 2017 cycle ended last week we’re turning our sights on the next class being built by Notre Dame. Things are off to a swell start as of this writing (4th in the Composite) but don’t go puffing out your chest just yet. It’s still very early and the big-hitters like Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and Florida are not in the Top 10 yet....

Scholarship Counts as Spring Practices begin

Scholarship Counts as Spring Practices begin

Based on current info, the number of players on scholarship (including fall enrollees) with the number of non-starting fifth years in parentheses:

Worth watching
Florida State 91 (3 - all three missed all of '16 due to injury) - FSU's MO is to wait until August before announcing attrition
Ohio State 88 (2) - Not much wiggle room without attrition.
Michigan 87 (4) - They've petitioned the NCAA for a sixth for Drake Johnson, so they could be at 88 with more non-starting fifth years than OSU.
TCU 87 (7) - Spring practice has not started for Frogs, so we wait on how many fifth years are offered.

No problems reaching 85 - or below it now
Texas 86 (2 - the only two left from the Class of '13)
Georgia 86 (5)
Alabama 85 (0) - Tight but Tide needs room to add a Blueshirt from '17 and two walkons with scholarships last year
Stanford 84 - (5)
LSU 84 (1)
Florida 83 (2 - both missed '16 with injuries)
Clemson 82 (1) - 82 includes two walkons with scholarships last year. Clemson always has room for walkon scholarships, which are usually renewed
USC 82 (2) - Three walkons with scholarships last year are not counted. A Blueshirt from the Class of '17 could get one of the three remaining scholies, too.

(Teams covered are two from each Power 5 conference except four from the SEC)

Scholarship Number Status, Spring Practice

Scholarship Number Status, Spring Practice

Based on current info, the number of players on scholarship (including fall enrollees) with the number of non-starting fifth years in parentheses

Still above 85.
Florida State 89 (3) - Down two due to graduate transfers
Ohio State 88 (2) - Unchanged. Both fifth year non-starters are at spring practice. Not much wiggle room without undergrad attrition.
TCU 87 (7) - Unchanged. Not counting two transfers in who sat out last year and a second string walkon FB. All seven fifth year non-starters on spring roster.
Michigan 86 (4) - Down one due to grad transfer. They've petitioned the NCAA for a sixth for Drake Johnson, so they could be at 87. More non-starting fifth years than OSU.

At or below 85
Texas 85 (2 - the only two left from the Class of '13). Down one who gave up football.
Stanford 85 (5) - Up one, from Class of '15, returning from his Mission
Alabama 85 (0) - Unchanged. Tight but Tide needs room to add a Blueshirt from '17 and two walkons with scholarships last year. One four star commit, who did not sign, is not talking about the reason, but no word on JC/prep enrollment. Trying to make room? Waiting on academics?
Georgia 84 (5) - Down two due to two graduate transfers
LSU 84 (1) - Unchanged. One star player is "taking time off of football for personal reasons". On scholarship. Academics?
Florida 83 (2 - both missed '16 with injuries) - Unchanged. Three walkons with scholarships in '16 graduated and moved on.
Clemson 82 (1) - 82 includes two walkons with scholarships last year. Clemson's returning walkon scholarships are usually renewed
USC 80 (2) - Down two. One was suspended for the bowl game - academics. One suspended due to conduct violation. Three walkons with scholarships last year are not counted and all are Seniors. A Blueshirt from the Class of '17, too. The count after expected scholarships to those would be 84.

(Teams covered are two from each Power 5 conference except four from the SEC)

Update on the Four teams over 85 on March 27

Update on the Four teams over 85 on March 27

Florida State - 89 (3 non-starting fifth years) No changes. All three of the fifth years played in spring practice after all three suffered season-ending injuries last year. Keith Bryant, DE, is expected to contribute. However, Jeremy Kerr, TE, is coming out of spring ball as perhaps the fourth TE, being passed by a walkon and younger players. Ryan Green, RB, has plenty of talent, but their RBs are stacked, so there is talk that he may transfer for more PT.

TCU - 87 (2 non-starting fifth years) Total unchanged total. All fifth years are on the spring roster except Travorris Johnson, RB, who was fourth string, has chosen to transfer to Oregon State for his fifth year and Bryson Burtnett, TE, who graduated and moved on. Connor Mayes, OL, has transferred to TCU from Minnesota and will sit out a year. Lucas Gravelle, LS, transferred from Wash St, for his final year of eligibility.

Ohio State - 86 (1 non-starting fifth year). Down two, Alex Stumpf, WR and Tyler Gerald, OL, who transferred. Tracy Sprinkle, DE - the non-starting fifth year- is fully healthy from his injury in '16 and expected to contribute in the DL rotation. Blake Haubeil, K, from the Class of 2017, is counted as a Grayshirt.

Michigan - 85 (4 non-starting fifth years). Total - Down 1. The only fifth year who may transfer is Ty Isaac, RB. Kingston Davis, RB, part of the Class of '16 class with three RBs, has chosen to transfer. Grant Perry, WR, is suspended, dealing with personal issues, and his return is unknown. Shelton Johnson, DE, has also recently been suspended, but is also still on scholarship.

Michigan's attrition by this time last year also dropped their scholarship count to 85 or below. Last year's scholarship numbers for teams at this time with two of the three still over 85 repeating from '16:

April 15, 2016 post (Oversigning Thread):

Alabama - 89. '16 class size - 25 (including 1 - Grayshirt from '15 class.) One Transfer In.

Florida State - 89. '16 Class Size - 25.
--- Redshirt Seniors not on the two deep - Two.

Ohio State - 87. '16 Class size -24. (One grayshirt to '17)

Next posting on the three schools remaining over 85 this year - FSU, TCU and Ohio State - or as needed. (I only monitor scholarship numbers from two schools from each P5 conference except SEC - four. Detailed above)

Florida State

Florida State

As noted from last year and this year, Florida State will typically be in the upper 80s after spring practice if a player prefers. Otherwise, decisions are made and announced prior to fall camp.

Some notes on players who needed to make an impact this spring and are possible transfers:

Seniors (5)
Ryan Green, RB (RS Sr) and Johnathan Vickers, FB (Sr) - both have not cracked the two deep and may be passed by younger players.
Jeremy Kerr, TE (RS Sr) - may be fourth on the depth chart, possibly passed by Freshman, injury history
Keith Bryant, DE (RS Sr) - possibly fifth on the depth chart, season-ending injury '16
Malique Jackson, DB (Senior) - buried on the depth chart

If all of the players decided to move on or end their careers, FSU would be at 84 scholarship players.

Redshirt Juniors (4)
Delvin Purifoy, LB - injuries during career at FSU
Abdul Bello, OT - never progressed to crack two deep.
Adam Torres, DE - not part of the DL rotation, season-ending injury in '16
Arthur Williams, DT - not part of the DL rotation.

So, despite the current 89 on scholarship at this time, like last year, FSU will be falling below 85 and may have room to offer walkons scholarships.

Teams renewing scholarships to walkons

Teams renewing scholarships to walkons

It's time for determining whether the walkons with scholarships last year have seen those renewed. (These are regarded as one year commitments until it appears they are included in the team's 85 scholarship roster players.)

Of those two teams in each P5 conference and the four in the SEC that I have been following:

Teams renewing walkons' scholarships plus Stanford (5)
Clemson - renewal of three walkons' scholarships puts them at 82 total.
LSU - renewal of their one remaining walkon with a scholarship last year puts them at 85 with transfer news of Randy Moss's son.
USC - renewal of their three remaining walkons with scholarships last year put them at 83 with one Blueshirt.
Florida - renewal of one walkon scholarship puts them at 83.
Stanford - no walkons with scholarships from last year remain, but Stanford honored their commitment to two recruits from the Class of 2015 who went on Missions, who have now joined the Class of '17, putting Stanford at 84.

Teams who had no walkons with scholarships last year who return this year (5):
Florida State - currently at 89
Texas - at 85
TCU - at 88
Michigan - at 85
Ohio State - at 86 (with one Grayshirt)

Teams with walkons who had scholarships last year, but undetermined at this time (2):
Alabama - at 85. Two walkons with scholarships last year are still eligible, with one Grayshirt and one Blueshirt. All four have not been counted in Bama's current count of 85.
Georgia - at 83 with news of release from scholarship of one of their '17 signees. One walkon to scholarship from last year still eligible. Father of Rodrigo Blankenship, starting Kicker, has advocated for a scholarship for his son. But Georgia is not giving him one until, possibly, the fall.

Ohio State had DBs transfer and are at 85.

TCU, from their newly posted fall roster, evidently did not fifth year scholarships to two DBs and an undergrad DB is also missing. A transfer in last year, who sat out '16, is also not on their roster. They accepted a grad transfer (K). TCU is at 85.

Only FSU is still over 85 at 89.

FSU Roster analysis - getting to 85

FSU Roster analysis - getting to 85

Florida State roster analysis if entire 2017 recruiting class qualifies

From 89 to 85.

Overloaded positions
Florida State will have six tight ends
The lone senior, Jeremy Kerr, has already graduated and will be, at best, third string.

Florida State will have 19 defensive linemen
The likely starters are a senior, junior, junior, and sophomore, with some additional upperclassman depth. But senior Keith Bryant and junior Adam Torres don’t project to play much, if at all.

FSU has eight backs (counting one FB)
Fisher’s usage pattern shows that he rides his starter for about 180 carries, gives his backup about 80, and then everybody else is fighting to get 20-30 carries over the course of the entire season.

FSU might have two junior linebackers who are backups to a pair of sophomores
Again, teams do not typically carry a lot of third-string upperclassmen. Fourth-year junior Delvin Purifoy was once a promising prospect, but has never been the same after a serious leg injury.

The greatest indicator of future eligibility troubles is past eligibility troubles. And at linebacker, this statement is worth watching. Classes get tougher, not easier, as a player moves up through college. Third-year linebacker Sh’Mar Kilby-Lane missed 2016 due to ineligibility, and fans will wait to see how far behind he is if he returns.

QB-3

TE-6
WR-11
OL-14
DL-18
LB-11
DB-12

Total-83

That's factoring in Hoge to BYU and Smith to ND and Barajas to Ill. State. Players with eligibility this coming season who have left:

Malik Zaire-QB-Florida
DeShone Kizer-QB-NFL Draft
Tarean Folston-RB-NFL Draft
Justin Brent-WR-Transfer
Torii Hunter-WR-MLB Draft
Corey Holmes-WR-Purdue
Jacob Matuska-TE-Retiring
Colin McGovern-OL-Virginia
John Montelus-OL-Virginia
Tristen Hoge-OL-BYU
Josh Barajas-LB-Illinois State
Devin Butler-DB-Syracuse

That makes 12 players leaving early and Notre Dame under the scholarship limit by 2 (not counting walk-ons added to scholarship). All boils down to Notre Dame could have recruited 97 Scholarships for 2017 and had room to squeeze everyone in (even more transfers likely to come).

2018 Scholarship #'s
QB-3
RB-4

WR-9
OL-8

If holding true to the principle that Graduate Seniors need to be invited back, then Notre Dame needs 11 recruits to get to the 85, plus an additional 12 to cover the Graduate Transfer spots while knowing not all will return and others will leave (Pro, Transfer, Retire). That gives this years class number at 23. Although seeing how there's a new coordinator on each side of the ball I'd be betting a little more attrition than usual will happen.

Florida State Attriton

Florida State Attriton

This week, with FSU starting at 89 scholarship players, has seen three players leave the program for various reasons.

Keith Bryant, DE, had left the team prior to his recent arrest per the school.
Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane, LB, who did not play last year due to academics, is moving on to JUCO.
Jeremy Kerr, TE, will not get a fifth year and will take a medical scholarship. He's had two shoulder surgeries and played sparingly.

Florida State is at eighty-six scholarship players - the only school of the thirteen I follow who is still over 85.

Bama released its fall roster.
Alabama Football Finds Its Way to an 85 Man Roster

Alabama took twenty-nine signees in the Class of '17, including two blueshirts and one grayshirt.
By my count, there are 85 scholarship players if you include blueshirts, OL Hunter Brannon and kicker Joseph Bulovas, but omitting grayshirt Jarez Parks and walk-ons Jamey Mosley, Levi Wallace, and Andy Pappanastos. Mosley and Wallace have earned scholarships in the past but only on a semester basis. Pappanastos may have as well but it is unclear.

In short, they are not yet on scholarship but will be in the fall as long as the total number is 85. Their signings will count towards the 2018 class. Parks too will count towards 2018 (meaning only 22 signees for this next class), but he cannot enroll until January 2018. There is a possibility that he could blueshirt as well if the Tide loses one more scholarship player before Fall. This scenario actually occurred to starting center Bradley Bozeman. He was initially asked to grayshirt but when someone left the program, he was bumped up to the fall enrollment.

Recent Attrition

Florida State - Marcus Lewis, CB (Jr) is transferring. FSU is now at 85 scholarship players. FSU has eleven true Seniors.

Alabama - T.J. Simmons, WR (Soph) is transferring. Alabama is at 84 counting two Blueshirt players from the '17 Class (they will count towards the '18 class). Alabama has thirteen true Seniors.

Clemson - LaSamuel Davis, DE (RS Fr) is transferring. Clemson is at 79 scholarship players, counting three walkons on scholarships. They can hand out a number of scholarships to other walkons. Clemson has six true Seniors.

Stanford - Clark Yarbrough, OG/C (RS Fr) is retiring from football due to concussions. Stanford is at 83 scholarship players. Two players returned from their LDS missions. Stanford has nine true Seniors.

Alabama

Alabama

With RB B.J. Emmons and DB Aaron Robinson transferring, Bama is at eighty-three scholarship players. I am now including two of the Class of '17 in the count, who were rumored to be Blueshirts on NSD - Joseph Bulovas, K and Hunter Brannon, OL. Both are in-state recruits who visited on their own. Saban in the past has rewarded Senior walkons with scholarships except for last year when Jamey Mosley, LB and Levi Wallace, DB got scholarships. Both will probably get the remaining two scholies. That puts Alabama at eighty-five.

The other unknowns have been whether Andy Pappanastos, K, who transferred in was on scholarship and whether Jarez Parks, 4 star #3 WDE, would be a grayshirt. Parks was recruited by Bama coaches and had visits, so he cannot be a blueshirt. He'll start in January.

How ND's scholarship numbers compare to a few selected teams by May 1. '18 class sizes in parenthesis. Fifth years still on the official roster are included as well as any announced walkons with scholarships.

ND - 87 (27)
Mich - 87 (not counting 3 walkons who are back who received scholarships last year) (19)
Ohio State - 87 (26) - includes one announced walkon to scholarship
Georgia - 85 (26) - one Senior with multiple injuries who has played only on special teams last year may take a medical
USC - 85 - Includes three walkons to scholarship (18)
Alabama - 85 (includes two Blueshirts and one Grayshirt from the '17 class now on scholarship) (19)
Stanford - 82 (15)

After NSD, a few selected teams' total scholarship numbers with Classes of '19 in parentheses,

Michigan - 91 (26) (counting four returning walkons who received scholarships in '18, 1 for '19)
Alabama - 89 (27)
ND - 88 (22) (not counting Bertrand)
Ohio State - 86 (29) (1 walkon awarded a scholie for 2019)

Georgia - 85 (24) (has also accepted three grad transfers after NSD counting towards total)
Clemson - 85 (27) (counting four returning walkons who received scholarships in 2019)
Stanford - 83 (23 and 1 returning from a mission) (Counting one returning walkon with a scholarship in 2018). NDMI?
USC - 82 (26) (counting one returning walkon who received scholarship in 2018)

Also assuming all fifth years eligible receive scholarships. Big Ten teams have to be at 87, reporting to the conference their totals, so Michigan may have unannounced attrition, graduating redshirt walkons or fifth years not offered scholarships.

Total signees for last two years
* Ohio State's 2018 class had 26 signees. Total for two years - 50.
* Georgia's 2018 class had 26 signees. Total for two years - 50.
* Alabama's 2018 class had 22 signees. Total for two years - 49.
* Notre Dame's 2018 class had 27 signees. Total for two years - 49.
* Michigan's 2018 class had 20 signees. Total for two years - 46.
* USC's 2018 class had 18 signees. Total for two years - 44.
* Clemson's 2018 class had 17 signees. Total for two years - 44.
* Stanford's 2018 class had 15 signees and 1 returning from mission. Total for two years - 38 + two returning from missions - 40.

Time to update some team's scholarship situations (2019 enrollees in parentheses):

Stanford - 80 (25) - Classes of '17 and '18 totaled 35, which makes 60 in the last three classes. Shaw always has room for walkons to get scholies. Total includes 2 w/os to have their scholarship renewed for '19

USC - 84 (25 and 3 transfers in) - Quite an offseason with a seeming drop to 80 with all those entering the Transfer Portal. but the three transfers in (McCoy, Steele, Richmond) and three Transfer Portal deciding to return fills out the roster minus one. (One w/o to schol. counted as renewed in total) Steele had to wait for a scholarship to become available.

Ohio State - 86 (17) - Counting two w/os to scholies renewed. One site has their Long Snapper not on scholarship. Eleven players graduated, five players entered the draft early, four players transferred out, one transferred in.

Michigan - 82 (26) - Not including six w/os who got scholarships last year. We'll see how that turns out. Eleven players graduated. Three players were graduate transfers out. One player transferred after two seasons. Two were early entrants.

Clemson - 84 (29) - Three previous classes totaled 51 (ave 17). The last four classes totaled 80. Twenty-one players graduated. Four players were early entrants to the draft. Two players transferred out and one retired. Dabo also likes to give w/os scholies. (Total includes three of those with scholarships renewed.)

It's worth comparing Alabama to teams like Ohio State and Clemson, who also had large numbers of players enter the draft.

Alabama - 85 (27). Four of the twenty-seven counted towards the Class of '18 (21). Fifteen enrolled early. Eleven of the twenty-one players from '18 redshirted.

Graduation and Attrition
- Fifteen players graduated in December with only one of them returning. (Total - fourteen of these moved on.) Of those fifteen, four graduating players with eligibility left transferred. (Only three, who are redshirt seniors, of the twenty-four enrollees from the Class of '15 are left on the roster.)
- Six others who graduated in May transferred
- Seven players not on the above lists entered the NFL draft early.

Totals from those three categories - twenty-seven. Class of 2019 - tweny-seven. All qualified and were enrollees.

Saban has not had anyone take a medical redshirt for quite a number of years. He has grayshirted only two signees over the last five classes (2015 and 2017). In general, as noted, unless they transfer early, they graduate. Of those with a year of eligibility left, only a few get a fifth year. The fifteen early enrollees is only exceeded by 2017 in which seventeen enrolled early going back to 2007.

Clemson had more signees in the Class of 2019 but counts three walkons having their scholarships renewed.. Ohio State did not have as many graduates, more fifth years, less early entrants to the draft, so their '19 class was seventeen.

Rutgers

Rutgers

Scholarships - Schiano has come in and is recruiting from the Transfer Portal. There has also been a number of current players on the 247 scholarship count who are transferring out.

Per 247 (which is occasionally not up to date), Rutgers sits at 103 scholarship players. As part of the total, are the 2020 seventeen signees (17) after the early signing period and six transfers in. Schiano continues to recruit - two recruits on Official Visits this weekend and, reportedly, further Transfer Portal players.

Seven Rutgers players listed in the Transfer Portal are also listed in 247's scholarship chart. Assuming all transfer, their scholarship count is 96. Of the seven potential fifth year players, only two have not started 11 or 12 games. Assuming those two are not offered a fifth year and the starters are, Rutgers is at 94.

WR seems particularly bloated. A couple of the fifteen current WRs listed have actually been moved to DBs. Three more are in the Transfer Portal. Without those, Rutgers has ten Active WRs with two Recruits.

So, how Schiano narrows how scholarships to eighty-five is worth watching. He may also be watching the Transfer Portal after spring practice for more experience. He'll also have a better idea who at Rutgers best fits his program. He has recruited some RS Seniors from other Big Ten programs and may continue to do so.

With NSD approaching, here are the current scholarship situations for these teams - not counting returning walkons who had scholarships in 2019 and assuming all their players in the Transfer Portal end up transferring:

Alabama - 90
Ohio State - 88
Michigan - 86
Notre Dame - 86 (not counting Grunhard or Asaaf)
Clemson - 85
Stanford - 82
USC - 80

Remember when NSD was huge?

Of the seven schools above, only USC signed a player - 1. Update: Alabama added three players who had committed but not signed to their signing list.

Updated scholarship numbers.

Alabama - 91
Ohio State - 88
Michigan - 86
Notre Dame - 86 (not counting Grunhard or Asaaf)
Clemson - 85 (plus three walkons who are still eligible and had scholarships last year)
Stanford - 82
USC - 81

A previous post here (54) highlighted Rutgers with their transfers both in and out. The BIG requires its teams to be at 87 after NSD and notification to the conference of how they are there if they have exceeded that number.

Schiano signed seventeen with three hard commits and six transfers in. 247s scholarship charts are inaccurate in many ways. Having reviewed those listed and assuming all the Transfer Portal entrants leave as well as those three hard commits are not part of their 2020 class, Rutgers current scholarship total is 90. They may have notified the BIG Commissioner that three others who are still on the roster will not have scholarships.

After a very busy offseason, Rutgers, by my count, is at 88. That assumes all who have entered the Transfer Portal leave and that the three ST players have scholarships renewed.

Eight players have transferred to other schools, including a couple of graduate transfers. Six of those transferred to FCS schools - Long Island, Maine, Robert Morris, Rhode Island. Of the other two - one to Missouri, one to Va Tech. One player left early for the NFL. Six players remain in the Portal. (Two other Rutgers players in the Portal are PWOs.)

Seven players transferred in from other programs - three from B10 schools, one who left OSU for UCF, one from the ACC and one from B12, one from FCS. Five were on the Defensive side. The new coaches with B10 experience have experience in the B10.

The offensive line was porous last year and has only one starter returning. In 2019, Rutgers scored five TDs through the air - more than the previous two seasons combined (1 in '18, 2 in '17).

The new OC spent last season as OC at Oklahoma State, so the offense may open things up. One transfer in is a QB from Baylor.

Looks like we are trying to add grad transfer Nick Mccloud from NC State starting CB for them

https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-pursuing-grad-transfer-db

Veteran cornerback with plenty of experience playing in the ACC. He missed most of last year with an injury, hence he received a redshirt, but from what I’ve read it was knee injury but not a tear. He was elected a team captain as well, so it speaks to his leadership abilities.

The positional value he offers makes his possible addition very exciting. Besides Crawford and Bracy, we have relatively no experience from the other returning CBs (if Griffith stays at S). McCloud offers up good height as well (listed at 6’1”), which is something we’ve lacked from most of our cornerbacks the last few seasons, the lone exception being Donte Vaughn.

There will be a lot of adjustment here for him. This year especially, most grad transfers are going to be way behind the 8-ball.

Intriguing development. Interesting to see what follows.
