Out of respect I'll avoid posting the gif in this thread, but watching that interview the whole time I was just thinking, "didn't I see this guy's face melt off in raiders of the last ark?"
That's it! The entire time I was watching I felt like he looked like someone from something but couldn't put my finger on it.

Couldn't we get a Franciscan or Benedictine?

The Jesuits are an exhausting bunch. This is only partially tongue-in-cheek and yes, I know, there was zero chance of that happening. I just immediately develop a hesitancy with someone educated in Berkeley. Lovely little town with aggressive liberalism everywhere.

Of course, I hope he is an excellent leader for ND and I wish him nothing but success.

He went to UCLA, not Berkeley, and he is a CSC, not a Jesuit. As far as I know.
Different Berkeley?

"Masters of Divinity from Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1993, was ordained a Holy Cross priest in the spring of 1994. After earning a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2003"

You are correct. His undergrad was at ND, grad school in California (M.Div at Jesuit School, MA and PhD at UCLA).

The school is in Berkeley, and has a reciprocal registration agreement with UCB through it's membership in the GTU, but it is not actually part of UCB. The Jesuit School of Theology itself is actually part of Santa Clara University.

All that I read about this guy indicates to me that he is a wonderful spiritual person, a fine scholar, and perhaps even a great man. Against the looming shadow of Theodore Hesburgh (and Edmund Joyce) everyone fails a bit in comparison, but this fellow might ascend to a seat at their table. Through all his success, he appears to have remained a humble pure human being in service to the rest of us.

As to the (really unimportant) mundane question of athletics: All that I've been able to find is that he played sports in high school. I find it difficult to believe that there is any wholesome human thing that he doesn't like. How important he feels it is is another question.
