Hate to be a pessimist, but this season is driving me to think the worst. Might the transfers combined with our poor start, also show that we are not bringing in the talent we thought we were? Guys like Reuland, Jones and Frazier were supposed to be blue-chip recruits. If they can't find the field on this team, does this mean our coaches are mis-evaluating these guys?

I know a lot goes into each individual decision to transfer, but something to think about...

It's a possibility but I doubt it. Take USuCk as an example. They had one of their RB's transfer this year, one who was featured on the cover of SI (not that that holds any merit of its own). Now he has plenty of talent, but really USuCk has brought in a small army of damn fine runners in recent years. It's a natural part of the process - if we bring in 6 5* tight ends, we are gonna lose one or two that figure out they won't be seeing the field. Nothing you can do about it except continue to recruit good talent to keep pushing one another.

As people have said in interviews with recruits that haven't signed yet, they are excited that they will have a chance to compete early. It's because they can see we have some numbers/talent lacking up top. No one is leaving because they think our younger/bigger classes won't get the job done. On the contrary all the young players see how good the other guys around them are for their level.

I hope Konrad (BAMF name, btw) has luck wherever he goes.

Indeed, best of luck. I know USC was recruiting him hard out of high school, so I hope he doesn't go there. I can envision him at ASU with Erickson.

I'm sure he won't be allowed to transfer there, b/c they're on our schedule.

Correct, I can't see him at any Pac 10 school that ND will play in the near future which would include USC, Stanford (Where his brother Warren is going), Washington, Washington St., and possibly UCLA and Arizona St. Both UCLA and ASu are on ND's future schedule, but neither have games scheduled against ND during the time that Konrad would be eligible to play.

If he is going to a D2 or D3 college, is it possible he transfers to Stanford with his brother? Does ND have a say where he goes after the D2 or D3 pit stop?

I don't know about coaches missing on their assessment, but this clearly isn't a good sign. On the one hand it opens scholarships... on the other, you have to ask "will the coaches be able to bring someone in who is at a higher level?" I'm not ready to cry of the impending doom, however.

Well, Crist is rated higher than Jones was coming out, and Rudolph is rated higher than Reuland. So getting higher level players isn't an issue. I think if we had some OL transferring because of coaching, then the warning bells and whistles should be going off. Recruits transferring because other high ranked recruits are taking their PT, that doesn't worry me as much.

From what I understand, it only matters if he wanted to transfer this year, as far as being released from scholarship to a school on our schedule. If Reuland transfers to a D2 or D3 then is offered and signs with another D1 it should have little bearing. Maybe someone on this board with NCAA knowledge could clarify? I wouldn't be surprised to see Reuland try to get on at Stanford or UCLA. He played at Mission Viejo and alot of those kids are Pac-10 guys... either way, transfers are a pretty regular occurance...it just sucks when one occurs during trying times for the program. How about the young talent though?

Question: Is it a case of the younger talent being better or these guys not being developed like they should be? That is what scares me! You take Reuland, Jones and Frazier out of that class and I believe it is no longer a top 10 class! I think like everyone, I was very excited to get Reuland...he was a tough kid with great hands and looked to have great potential. These transfers worry me more then the 0-3 start!!!!!!!!!!

When AA started to take reps away from the older guys everyone was saying he must be good, I think the same goes for any position on the team.

ALL top classes are going to lose players, because of the level of competition and other such things. Reuland said that this had been on his mind for a while, for lots of reasons:

Reuland: I wasn't happy with where I was

ERIC HANSEN
Tribune Staff Writer

Konrad Reuland boarded a plane bound for California Monday afternoon, not knowing what the next step in his football future would look like.

He just knows it won’t happen at the University of Notre Dame.

“Basically, it came down to the fact I wasn’t happy with where I was,” the 6-foot-6, 255-pound sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., told the Tribune via cell phone Monday. “It was combination of things, not just football, not just the school. I wanted badly to be happy again, and felt this move was the best thing for me.

“I realize Notre Dame is a very special place. I wouldn’t have picked it from all the schools in the country if it wasn’t. But it didn’t work out for me on a personal level. I felt the change was the best.”

Reuland, who met with Irish head coach Charlie Weis on Sunday, becomes the third top 100 prospect form ND’s vaunted sophomore class to leave Notre Dame in the past three months, joining quarterbacks Zach Frazer (Connecticut) and Demetrius Jones (Northern Illinois or TBA).

“After meeting with Konrad Reuland on Sunday, he has decided he will leave the team and withdraw from Notre Dame,” Weis said Monday in a statement. “I appreciate all Konrad has done for Notre Dame, and I wish him nothing but the best.”

Reuland was regarded as the nation’s top tight end prospect coming out of Mission Viejo High School two years ago, but his playing time at Notre Dame has been limited and he did not catch a pass in a game during his time at ND.

In 2006, he played roughly 18 minutes spread over seven games. This season, he saw spot action in three of ND’s first four games.

The hit is more of a perceptual one than one that will affect ND’s depth. Fifth-year senior John Carlson remains the starter. Sophomore Will Yeatman is No. 2, and freshman Mike Ragone, the top tight end prospect nationally in his class, had recently leapfrogged Reuland on the depth chart.

ND has commitments from two standout tight end prospects for next year -- 6-6, 229-pound Kyle Rudolph of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 6-8, 250 Joseph Fauria from Encino, Calif.

“I don’t have any idea where I’ll end up,” Reuland said. “I’m kind of looking forward to going through recruiting again. I want to pick the best school for me for the long run, not the one that feels good today.”

That means trying to rush to get into a school to gain some eligibility in 2008 is not a high priority, “only a tiebreaker if two schools are even,” Reuland said. “You can’t worry about eight games really. I’m not going to rush into anything.”

Stanford, he said, is a possibility. That’s where younger brother Warren Reuland, a 6 -5, 200-pound wide receiver, is verbally committed. But Weis’ policy has been not to release players to schools that pop up on ND’s schedule during the balance of the transfer’s playing career. So getting to Palo Alto could have some entanglements.

Reuland said the thoughts of transferring have been percolating with him for a while.

“This wasn’t an impulsive decision,” he said. “I actually finally made up my mind that I was leaving last Wednesday. I just wanted to make sure I took the right steps to make this as positive a move for everyone involved. I didn’t want to be a distraction for myself, my teammates and the coaching staff. I want the best for them too.”

Transfers of guys burried on the depth chart only brings more scholarships for next year's recruiting class. I think ND was going to have something like only 16 next year if they used all available slots this year. Now, with Jones and Reuland gone, we are up to 18. If we only take 22 or 23 this year, we'll have 20 or 21 next year. I hate to see Reuland go, and wish him the very best, but the silver lining in all this is that it may be a case where it is best for all parties to part ways.

I have to say I'm concerned with this transfer. As great as our incoming recruiting class is, we are short on experience. Reuland would have been the #2 TE next spring and could compete for the #1 spot. The guy was the #2 TE in his class so he's not exactly a slouch player.

Also, although I'm not worried about the current recruits who are committed to the Irish, I think this year's poor showing will make it difficult to land future recruits. Not impossible, our coaches are great recruiters and work their tails off. But I'd like to keep the players we have.

I agree that Reuland could turn out to be good, but he was already solidly behind Yeatman, and Ragone seemed close to moving ahead of him as well. That's what happens when you recruit well: even a guy who's near the top at his position (see also: Jones, Demetrius and Frazer, Zach) in his class might not end up making it.

Searching his name in google along with dead, died, deceased and synonyms turned up what you found. Searching with anuerysm turned up a post on a premium Rivals message board. I don't subscribe.

I saw a tweet this morning from Christine Golic (Mike's wife, Mike Jr/Jake's mom) saying that Reuland had passed. Mike Sr retweeted it but the original has since been deleted.
