Weis is gone in the offseason. If you are the AD and you are trying to build a strong franchise, I don't see how you keep him. Michigan and Navy were teams you should have beat with the talent you have. USC I can understand, but the loss to Navy was unexcusable.
I am not a Charlie hater. I think he has done much for the program and think he is a good guy. I think he can run a great program. I support him. But this is reality and this is ND. The mistakes he made in his first few years - not developing players, not recruiting defense, not turning over his ineffective coaches - cost him one of the best jobs in the world.
We are going to lose some solid recruits, no two ways about it. Young kids want to go to winning programs. ND may lose 2-3 solid prospects because of this. Not enough to kill the program certainly, but that means this top talent goes elsewhere, again.
Tenuta may have lost his job. He did zero adjustments on defense. The one thing that scare me coming into this game was defending the fullback up the middle. Navy just gashed and gashed and gashed, it was their biggest play all day long. I don't understand how, as a DC, that you don't see that and change your gameplan right on the spot.
The only reason the sweeps and the long pass for a TD they had worked is because they established the inside running game first. I think ND was playing their tackes wide due to the offensive line stances, and I think they played into Navy's hands. I think you have to man a nose up on the center, and pinch your other tackle close straight up on a guard. I think you have a MLB spy who just concentrates on the FB. I think you run some 4-4 formations, maybe even a 5-2 to try and stop those quick inside handoffs. Just do anything to muck up the middle, and make Navy beat you by throwing and running sweeps. ND has too much speed that it wouldn't have worked, and Navy would not have controlled the clock. Navy just ran their QB, fullback and RB between the tackles all day long. That was disgusting to watch.
Blanton probably needs to lose his starting job. He just frustrates me. He seems to be easily fooled and doesn't make plays on the ball when it is in the air. In the Navy game, he played like Harrison and just let his guy run past him in total confusion. Those plays will turn you into a 6-6 team really fast. Guys have to play with discipline, and I don't see it on this team.
That's the last point, stupid mistakes. Navy game illustrates why ND is under performing. They have a lot of talent, enough to win, but they play sloppy and stupid at times. ND should have beaten the crap out of Navy at home today. No excuses. ND has some of the smartest athletes on the field. The hallmark of this team should be the kind of play Navy has, disciplined, smart, with execution to a fault.
