Smith and McCoy will give you just that.

I think Paddy Mullen is going to be a DT. Call me crazy, but that's my hunch.

The secondary and DE are locked up. McCoy and another LB will be nice.

Washington, Smith and Quinn from last year to go with Richardson and Smith for this year will give ND some nice linebacking depth.

I'm really starting to come around to your side on Paddy Mullen at DT. Size-wise he's not far off. He can make a very athletic DT. The NFL and NCAA are loaded with stud DT's and OL that were high school TE's. Heck, Warren Sapp was a high school TE. TE's tend to be the most athletic big guys on their teams. Bring in the athletes, build them up a little and set them loose.

You're not going to get that but I'll take Jiggs' five any day. We'd all be rich if we had a dollar for every offensive guy that wound up on defense. Just because these guys played offense in high school does not mean they cannot be changed. The needs of the team will dictate where they play.

Most of these recruits play both ways in high school because they are the best athletes. The position in college will be determined when they can be evaluated.

love that idea. then just like sapp we could bring in mullen on goal line situations to block, with the option to free himself for an easy td pass. though i hope mullen leaves the pogo-stick celebrations up to sapp

Hey guys first-time poster longtime reader, it's getting late, so I don't have time to explain my obsession with Notre Dame Football. But I will state that I have been to two games, the first in '04 against BC, and the other this year against Tennessee. This is going to sound like some fan blowing smoke especially from a first time poster, but i'm sharing it here first because while I read all message boards I've come to respect this board the most. I'm a recruiting nut, and am always anxious to read what jiggifini19 and the rest of the boys are saying. So, when I was at the Tennessee game, it was confirmed to me at that time that Young, Carufel and Reuland were Irish. This is a lock! I'm not going to post again until the AA game in January, when these three will announce, although its like Reuland's commitment may be sooner. I cannot reveal my source, as the person is responsible for getting my buddies and I our great seats every year, but the source is solid! I look forward to chatting some more in January, and hopefully adding some more positive good news in the future!

Go Irish

probably in part b/c ND is so loaded at TE right now, especially if they land Reuland.

Hey, you know who I just thought about? Remember David Nelson?? That kid's gotta be crying somewhere in Florida right about now. I mean, Notre Dame just had 2 recievers go over 1,000 yards and 10 TDs in Weis' first season, while Florida didn't have a kid go over 850 and 9.

Talk about screwing up your football future...I mean geez....

I'll take Carufel, Young, and Reuland, thank you. Otherwise we'll be back to the days of 3 and out and the defense living (and dying) on the field. And I'd take Wenger over a LB.

I think they need Smith and McCoy.

With Carufel and Young, that would land ND 5 linemen. If Yeatman comes in on a LaCrosse scholarship, that's 6.

I like the idea of Wenger being a true center, but Eric Olson is versitile enough to play any of the three line positions and can be moved.

You know who would have been nice to get? That Bennet kid that Charlie recruited late, but he want to Vandy. He was not rated highly and folks were questioning why he was being recruited, especially if the competition was Vandy. Well, he's turned out to be one of the best freshman receivers in the nation. He had a huge year. It just goes to show how much more we should trust Charlie's evaluation of these players than some internet scouts.

Beautiful -- what a great post. How happy do you think David Grimes and DJ Hord are right now knowing they have all the opportunity in the world over the next 3 years and played some good minutes as true frosh.

You know what?

David Nelson is example #1 that Weis is not going to kiss or wipe any @ss with these recruits. That punk wanted Weis to come to his house the Monday after the AFC Championship. Weis said if they lost, he'd be there but if they won he'd have to be in NE to prep for the game. And ND was sending the MAX amount of assistants that can be present for a home visit.

So screw David Nelson. He went to Florida because Urban strokes these kids and treats them like Divas.

Nelson was no loss. He was an example of what NOT to do when Charlie Weis is recruiting you.

Jiggs, I'm with you on this guy. In my opinion he would have gone to Fla. regardless of what Weis did. When a recruit can make a head coach jump through hoops he just wants someone to lick his boots. Weis is too smart to fall for that crap. Nelson can shove it as far as I am concerned.

I recall someone on another board from NY saying they've seen him play and he is dominant on the defensive line. But, this is going strictly by my shaky memory. Either way, six OL would be nice, but it's also potentially too many, especially with a lack of depth at DT.

Oh, Olson is angry. He's just a nasty kid.

I like how he gets after it. To see him on defense would be fun.

====================================================

A special year in ND recruiting
Who will land the final spots in class?

BOB WIENEKE Tribune Staff Writer 12/4/05

In most years, the Notre Dame football banquet weekend served as part awards ceremony, part recruiting tool. Perhaps not in even that order.
This, however, has been no ordinary recruiting year.
Twenty-two players have given ND coach Charlie Weis verbal commitments, and the only players making official visits for Friday's banquet were players who already had committed.
The large number of early commitments leaves little space in the recruiting class of 2006, although the Irish could surpass the NCAA maximum of 25.
Running back James Aldridge and offensive lineman Chris Stewart have said they will enroll at ND for the spring semester, meaning their scholarships will count against last year's total and allow for more scholarships to be offered this year. George West, another committed player, has not yet made up his mind but, according to his high school coach, is leaning toward early enrollment.
So who will fill those final spots? The following is a player-by-player breakdown of Notre Dame's remaining targets according to recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.
-Sam Young, OL, 6-foot-7, 292 pounds, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Aquinas High School): Young is, in the opinion of some, good enough to start along the Irish offensive line next season. He has not visited Notre Dame yet, but is expected to do so once his high school season ends. Young is also involved with Florida, Miami, Penn State and Michigan. "I think it looks great for Notre Dame," Lemming said. "I think Notre Dame has definitely got to be considered one of the favorites."
-Gerald McCoy, DT, 6-5, 300, Oklahoma City (Southeast). McCoy is the highest rated player with whom Notre Dame remains involved. McCoy isn't saying much, but Lemming believes it's down to ND, USC, Miami and possibly Oklahoma. An announcement may not arrive until close to signing day. "I do know that his parents like the religious aspects of Notre Dame," Lemming said.
Konrad Reuland, TE, 6-6, 240, Mission Viejo, Calif. The nation's top tight end made his official visit to Notre Dame for the Nov. 12 Navy game, a game in which ND tight end Anthony Fasano caught four passes, including a touchdown. Reuland recently canceled a visit to Stanford and was expected to attend Saturday's USC-UCLA game. Lemming believes that Reuland is leaning toward Notre Dame, but more will be known after the weekend.
Butch Lewis, DT, 6-7, 280, Aurora, Colo. (Regis Jesuit). Georgia and USC may hold a slight lead over the Irish, but Lemming noticed a lot of ND fans at Lewis' high school when he visited in May. He also has recently noticed a big ND fan in Lewis' own household. "In the mom's mind it's Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Notre Dame," Lemming said.
Toryan Smith, LB, 6-1, 235, Rome, Ga. Could be the next player to announce, and it appears to be between Notre Dame and Florida. "I think Toryan likes them both but what I've been hearing is that the dad would really like him to go to Notre Dame," Lemming said.
Matt Carufel, OL, 6-5, 290, St. Paul, Minn. (Cretin-Derham Hall). Carufel, from the same school as current Irish players Ryan Harris, Rashon Powers-Neal and Marcus Freeman, will announce during the Jan. 7 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Carufel is reportedly down to Minnesota, Iowa and ND, but he was spotted after one Irish home game wearing an ND hat while sitting outside the Irish locker room.
Dan Wenger, C, 6-3, 270, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Aquinas). The teammate of Young has already made his official visit to Notre Dame. Wenger could also play other spots along the line. Florida and Miami have offered. "I just think he's leaning to Notre Dame," Lemming said.
Terrence Austin, WR, 5-11, 170, Long Beach, Calif. (Poly). The speed receiver that this class lacks will announce during the All-American Bowl on Jan. 7. But because Notre Dame has secured commitments from three receivers already, four if you count defensive back/receiver West, Austin may land elsewhere. He is also considering UCLA and California.
"I think right now the only way Notre Dame gets him is if they lose a couple of other guys," Lemming said. "But he's still out there for sure."
LaRon Moore, DB/WR, 5-11, 185, Midwest City, Okla. Like Austin, Moore may be the victim of a numbers crunch at his position. He's been starting to show more interest in Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, but has set no timetable for a decision.
Jason Kates, DT, 6-3, 330, Harrisburg, Pa. (Bishop McDevitt). Kates, who at one time had been rumored to be committed to ND, is also involved with Penn State and Virginia. "I believe if Notre Dame put pressure on him right now, he'd come," Lemming said.
Marques Wilkins, WR/DB, 6-1, 188, Decatur, Ill. (MacArthur). Wilkins is committed to Illinois, but is a good friend of Irish quarterback commit Demetrius Jones. If he backs out of his commitment to the Illini, and if ND is looking to land another receiver/defensive back, this could be a name to remember.
Osahon Tongo, LB, 6-3, 225, Naperville, Ill. (North). If Smith commits to Notre Dame, it's likely all over at linebacker. But if he doesn't, Tongo could be another name to keep in mind.

Remaining Prospects Visit List
by JASON SAPP

During the recruiting process, one of the integral pieces of evaluating your options is the experience on the official visit. The NCAA has set a maximum number of five official visits, so the prospects must choose wisely which schools they will visit officially if that is the determining factor.

Official visits allow the recruits to gather an impression of campus life, academics, the coaching staff/administration, team chemistry and other factors that are held specific to the prospect in making their decision.

Here is a list of the remaining prospects on Blue and Gold’s Master List with a brief bio and update on their visits:

David Ausberry
WR, 6-4, 213
Lemoore, CA

The Irish currently have four wide receivers verbally committed in the class and it appears that the only prospect that would be added as a fifth is Terrence Austin. In fact, Coach Weis is reportedly holding a spot for him until his decision is made. Ausberry's interest level is low, but Austin has had ND and UCLA as his leading schools for quite some time. Could Ausberry slip into the picture? It’s doubtful they’ll take another receiver outside of Austin.

He has visited Nebraska, Ohio State and Georgia; and is set to visit USC on Dec. 2.

Terrence Austin
WR, 5-10, 175
Long Beach, CA

Austin has recently added Oregon to his list of his top schools, alongside Notre Dame and UCLA. He was expecting a visit from Coach Weis when he was traveling the California area this past weekend, but was told that Weis would rather visit closer to when his decision will be made at the Army All-American Bowl. Some feel that this prospect is a lock for UCLA with the postponed visit by Weis and delayed, if not cancelled, visit to Miami.

He has been both Oregon and Notre Dame on official visits. He is scheduled to take two more visits, to UCLA on Dec. 16 and Arizona on Jan. 13, with a visit to Miami possibly being rescheduled for sometime in December..

Jim Barrie
OL, 6-5, 310
Tampa, FL

Barrie is one of the Irish’s targets at offensive line that seems to have faded out of the mix a bit. This is mainly due to the fact that there are three current verbal commitments by Bartley Webb, Eric Olsen and Chris Stewart. Plus, Matt Carufel and Dan Wenger are rumored to be silent commitments. That makes five in the class and with the limited scholarships, and with where the Irish seem to stand with Sam Young, the focus on this prospect may have dwindled a bit.

He has visited Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Michigan; and is scheduled to visit Florida on Dec. 2 and Florida State on Dec. 9.

Matt Carufel
OL, 6-5, 288
St. Paul, MN

Carufel is said to have been an Irish silent commit for quite some time. The speculation has been supported by his presence unofficially for the BYU game wearing a ND cap and the cancellation of his visit to Iowa, which is Notre Dame’s main competitor.

His only official visit thus far has been to Notre Dame, which he rated an 11 out of a perfect 10.

Lou Eliades
OL, 6-4, 286
Ocean, NJ

Eliades is another offensive line prospect that I feel may have fallen off the radar a bit for the same reasons as Barrie. I don’t see much of a difference in talent level between these two prospects and recruits Daron Rose and Lawrence Marsh, which the coaching staff have stopped contacting. He is planning to come to ND on an official visit, having rescheduled after the USC weekend visit was cancelled.

He has visited South Carolina and Virginia Tech; and is set to visit Notre Dame on Dec. 9.

Micah Johnson
LB, 6-2, 265
Fort Campbell, KY

Johnson showed late interest in Notre Dame which was revived due to the success of the team and his feeling that ND has the best coaching staff in the country. After the official visit to ND, he remained consistent in his decision that Kentucky is his leading school, mainly because his brother is a contributing true freshman there. Rumors, even as of yesterday, have Johnson already verbally committed to the Wildcats’ coaching staff. His high school coach stated that an announcement should be expected in the next two weeks.

He has visited Georgia and Notre Dame officially, but has yet to set any other official visit dates.

Jason Kates
DT, 6-2, 324
Harrisburg, PA

Kates has been the most challenging prospect to interpret as far as where he stands with Notre Dame. The Irish have yet to land a defensive tackle prospect and the situation with Kates may just get held off a bit longer until the staff can get a better understanding of where they stand with Gerald McCoy.

He has visited Minnesota and after a productive unofficial visit to Maryland, where a former player of his high school is currently on the team and two current players are verbally committed, he has set an official for Dec. 9. He has yet to schedule an official to Notre Dame.

Anthony Lewis
LB, 6-2, 220
Haltom City, TX

Lewis continues to remain quiet in the media world and still insists that he has not come closer to making a decision or narrowing his list of schools. Although he is a top prospect at his position, we haven’t heard too much from him as of late on his feelings about ND or theirs toward him. He seems to be yet another prospect that is fading out of mix with the limitations on scholarships.

He has visited Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Oklahoma; and has yet to set any other visit dates.

Butch Lewis
DT, 6-6, 280
Denver, CO

Lewis has been one of my favorite prospects in the class to watch. He is an extremely athletic player and has the versatility to perform just as well on the offensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, I don’t feel the Irish have a good shot at landing this prospect, as he seems to be a Georgia lean. The focus may be mainly on Kates and McCoy to fill the void at defensive tackle in the class.

He has visited Notre Dame, Georgia and LSU; and is set to visit USC along with Ausberry on Dec. 2.

Gerald McCoy
DT, 6-4, 305
Oklahoma City, OK

McCoy, were he to commit, would have to be considered the gem of the class. He is a truly dominating player who has managed to perform above and beyond his competitors regardless of the double and sometimes triple teams he’s faced all season. Many say it is coming down to ND and USC with possibly the Trojans favored. With the emphasis the Irish have placed on the necessity for this position and how well he can fit the mode early in his career, I keep my stance that the Irish still have a legitimate shot at McCoy.

McCoy has visited Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and USC; and has cancelled a Tennessee trip to visit LSU on Dec. 9 and Miami on Dec. 16.

LaRon Moore
CB, 5-9, 179
Midwest City, OK

Moore is being recruited not only as a cornerback, but as a wide receiver as well. With the Irish currently having the best duo of cornerbacks secured with Darrin Walls and Raeshon McNeil, and four current verbal commitments at wide receiver with some attention still towards Austin, I just don’t see Moore in the mix as one of the prospects that the Irish will fight for. The main benefit at this point appears to be that he may be able to help in landing highly-touted McCoy with the assistance of George West.

He has taken official visits to Notre Dame and Stanford; and has yet to schedule any other visits.

Konrad Reuland
TE, 6-6, 239
Mission Viejo, CA

Reuland is the top prospect at his position despite minimal experience in the game of football. He has displayed his ability to serve as both a receiving and blocking tight end, and it appears that he sees himself being able to do the same once current Irish tight end Anthony Fasano departs. He is rumored to be a silent commit to the coaching staff and will announce after his next visit takes place this weekend to watch the local California rivals compete.

Reuland’s only official visit has been to Notre Dame and he is set to visit USC this weekend for the UCLA match-up.

Toryan Smith
LB, 6-0, 230
Rome, GA

Smith seems like the most likely to come aboard the Irish train to fulfill the demands at the linebacker position. He was prepared to make his announcement but delayed doing so to get two more visits in. I feel these additional visits may have been more encouraged than volunteered, so the staff can get a better perception of where they stand with Micah Johnson. He is expecting visits this week from coaches from his top four choices – Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama and Florida – and is set to announce Dec. 5 on ESPNU.

He has taken official visits to Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida.

Dan Wenger
OL, 6-4, 285
Fort Lauderdale, FL

Wenger has handled being in the shadow of his fellow offensive line teammate Sam Young, but is rather talented himself. He is rated as one of the top three prospects at his position and will play alongside Young in the Army All-American game. It has been rumored that he is currently a silent commitment to Notre Dame, but his announcement will not take place until after his high school season is completed.

Wenger has taken official visits to Notre Dame and Purdue; and has yet to schedule any other visits.

Sam Young
OL, 6-8, 280
Fort Lauderdale, FL

Young is considered the most talented player at his position in the country and he is surely gathering the exposure to verify that claim. He’s done quite a bit of traveling with his father to create a list of his top seven schools – Florida, Miami, ND, USC, Stanford, Michigan and Penn State. Those seven still stand a chance and once his season comes to an end, he will re-evaluate what each program has to offer and will likely make a decision close to National Signing Day.

Young has not taken or scheduled any official visits as of yet and is planning to take all of his visits in January. He has visited Florida and Miami unofficially.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although an official visit experience is important to many prospects, it isn’t the determining factor in all cases.

From my own experience, my high school played on Saturdays so I was unable to take any official visits during the season. I played high school basketball as well, so all my visits were squeezed into the month of December. I decided to take three official visits –Virginia Tech (Dec. 3), Notre Dame (Dec. 10) and the University of Miami (FL) (Dec. 17).

With the obvious differences between my three top choices, it is also difficult for a visit to a cold, snowy campus in South Bend to compare to the hot, sandy beaches and exotic nightlife of Miami’s South Beach. My experience on official visits was obviously not the decision-maker on my college choice.

To date, the Irish coaching staff has been successful in landing 22 public verbal commitments, two additional openings due to early enrollments and is continuing to show promise in how the class will close out.

Weis has created an advantage to be ahead of the rest and has taken the early jump on the 2007 prospects. I think it is fair to say that a new era has begun, and Coach Weis is doing everything possible to bring the University’s football team back to glory.

This all makes my head spin. When's the last time we've been in the running for this many top recruits this late in the game? I've only recently started keeping up with this stuff.

Under Davie and TW, Notre Dame became notorious for losing guys at the last minute. CJ Leak, Lorenzo Booker, Reggie Bush, etc.

Who will they lose at the last mintue this year? MAYBE McCoy and/or Young?

They've gone after a lot of guys and gotten them. The only guys they've lost I would have really wanted were Steve Brown, Brandon Graham, Jaime Cumbie and Taylor Mays. They lost all of those guys early and Brown and Cumbie had ND #2.

Next year's class will be BETTER than this one.

I've been pondering why Lou Eliades is visiting on 12/9 when Barrie and Marsh were apparently told there's no room at the inn. Eliades is the 40th ranked OL on Scout and ranked higher than Stewart #43, Olsen #48 ,Webb #51 and Barrie #57 and Marsh unranked.

All along I've thought ND would take 6 OLs because of the dearth of OLs and the time generally to build up their bodies and strength to Div 1 where OLs aren't 50-80 pounds bigger than the defenders (like in HS) and to learn/polish technique and learn to make the line reads while adapting to the faster level of play. But with Webb, Olsen, Stewart, probably Carufel, and quite possibly Young and Wenger ND would have 6!

Is Eliades coming to see ND in case one of the others choses elsewhere? Or is Eliades possibly a DL candidate ala Butch Lewis?

Is he a swing man that could play on either side of the ball. Charlie likes versatile athletes. At 6-4 283 5.0 as listed by Scout, Eliades has the size to get PT early on. With 9 months between now and opening day he has ample time to add 10-20 pounds through serious weight conditioning. And note the comments below from his Scout profile:

STRENGTHS
Aggresiveness / Tenacity
Explosion
Nasty Streak

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Pass Protection

Eliades is very explosive off the snap, and he finishes every play. You'll see him drive defenders 10-15 yards until the whistle blows.

Is he just another OL prospect or is he a viable inside pass rush candidate?
