A.) Saban went on to win 22 of his next 23 games. And is 32 of 35 since that start.

B.) That was in the SEC

Right. So, we have an incomplete sample here. At this point in their tenures, they are pretty much in a flat footed tie.

I don't think Kelly will win 22 of 23, but the argument doesn't really hold up yet.

It depends on how you define success. The only way for ND to "succeed" is to win 10+ games against a typically brutal regular season schedule, thereby making it into a BCS game. An SEC team can succeed by winning their division, even if they lose the championship game.

I do think ND would have an easier time of winning the SEC East than in making it to the BCS as an independent. Factor in the championship game and it's probably a wash.

You know, I can agree with that. You get past UF and UGA your at the least playing for a spot in the NC game. That is before A&M, and hoping UT sucks forever and South Carolina is just a flash in the pan.

BGIF--I agree playing these teams are a joke, without a doubt. But even with these teams on the schedule Bama, Lsa and Ark still played a top 15 schedule and they didn't have the SEC championship game to inflate the SOS. The SOS should include the league championship game (only 2 teams play so it's not like everyone in the conference gets an inflated ranking). I don't know about you guys, but I have been lucky enough to attend the UF/Bama SEC champ game a few years back. I think Bama beating UF was a tougher game that year then the National Championship game.

LSU, ARK and the entire conference benefit from the Championship Game as it improves the SOS by raising the rating for the two teams that play there. The 1997 SEC Football Media Guide pays tribute to SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer for having the foresight to separate the SEC into two divisions ELIMINATING early season losses by lessing the major powers facing each other. It lauds him for developing "new scheduling formats" which put two SEC teams into contention for the BCS games where under the one division setup only one team was getting NC consideration. The Championship game also allowed the SEC a game AFTER the season was over to jump over idle teams that were done. No small coincidence Roy Kramer was also the first Commissioner of the BCS and juggled the ranking setup several times to his advantage as well as rewritting the rules about Div 1aa opponents being considered for bowl eligibility.

Good post, I didn't know pretty much any of that. I just feel a lot of people hate on the SEC, but every year they played for the NC....They deserved too. LSU, UF, BAMA, and AUB where great teams who pretty much dominated everyone they played. I just hope with our recent recruits we can start playing football like those teams. Side note, has anyone watched UF this year?? It's pretty cool seeing our old offense ran with elite athletes at every position. It would be kinda crazy to see the highest paid coach at ND win a NC for UF.
