How Good Of A Recruiter Is Brian Kelly?

How Good Of A Recruiter Is Brian Kelly?

Still re-inventing the wheel, CincyWasOverrated? There's been ongoing discussion in the thread "Recruiting Status '10" on Kelly's perceived abilities and limitations. Terry Tate's posted some links there to provide some substance to the discussion rather than just negative bias.

BTW, CincyWasOverrated, what is this supposed to mean "... the coaching change from Charlie Weis to Brian Kelly would not have negatively affected our recruiting to the point that it has." It's becoming clearer why you keep changing your user name.

I'm merging the two threads.

Kelly has only been on the job for a few months how do you expect him to form great bonds with these kids? Other coaches have been talking them for a whole season on football. I'm willing to give him a pass this year and wait to see that he can do when he gets a whole season to recruit.

That was my primary argument about him before the hire regarding that his lack of experience as a coach on a BCS level would negatively affect him if he were to come to a program like Notre Dame.

He brought over a staff that has followed him from GVSU through multiple stops however these guys are not used to recruiting Nationally, Alford is our only recruiter with a track record to go out of state to recruit players. I would've rather he kept Polian due to his California connection than Alford but thats how things worked out.

So before the infantry arrives to reinforce the word of Brian Kelly, the coaching change from Charlie Weis to Brian Kelly would not have negatively affected our recruiting to the point that it has. Kelly's primary recruiting responsibility has been to try to keep as much of the previous staff's commitments to remain with Notre Dame, after getting being sure of several players' motives he could focus on recruiting.

Brian Kelly's first 2 commitments came from Austin Collingsworth, the #121 ranked safety according to ESPN. Collingsworth was on Kelly's radar at Cincinatti but received a Notre Dame offer to fill a need. I've seen some of Collingsworth's ability and I think he will be solid at Notre Dame, but I dont feel he was worth a Notre Dame scholarship offer. You dont recruit players that you dont expect to ever start at your program, you should always target the most talented players and those you do expect to start.

Kelly followed up with an addition of Tate Nichols, the #101 ranked Offensive Tackle although he could project as a TE or OT in college depending on what the staff sees in him. We snagged him away from the trees. Obviously another guy that Kelly had on his radar from his time at Cincinatti and decided in order to fill a need he offered him a scholarship. To summarize this, guys who become tweeners as Tackles and Tight Ends rarely succeed in college or the NFL and they're rare in general. Some guys are naturals at either position and may have played both in High School but to grab a tweener at both positions makes his development very interesting.

During his recruitment of borderline top 100 recruits at their positions we end up losing out on our prized recruit for the 2010 class, Anthony Barr. I am not disappointed in his decision because I dont doubt his talent at all and I know he will be great anywhere. We also lose out on Giovanni Bernard, who could still remain committed but that seems unlikely at this point so close to NSD.

At this point it seems very likely that we are going to land Matt James, Danny Spond, and Jeremy Ioane. Thats solid, but not the great finishes were have been accustomed to with Charlie Weis despite sometimes losing guys on NSD. I'm just going to say that it smells a lot similar to the start of the Ty Willingham era.

ChamPen....That last paragraph basically seals the fact that you have no clue what you're talking about. No one...and I mean no one should be compared TyWho... He's in a stratosphere all his own.

Listen, I know you don't like Kelly. Hell, I'm not sold myself, however, let's let the guy coach a game for Christ's sakes before you crucify him. Otherwise, you're in for a long stay here with me and many, many other members/mods on this board.

as a new guy to this forum and a lifelong Irish fan it amazes me just how much people bash Coach Kelly's recruiting/coaching ability etc without the man even coaching a single game at ND. CW did a great job of recruiting but the man couldnt coach a college team....all the top 15 and top 10 classes don't mean anything if you don't win. Kelly is a proven college coach and he has done it under some pretty austere circumstances. How bout we give the man a chance without shooting ourselves in the foot.

This just further demonstrates to me why a coach, any coach, would have major reservations about coaching at ND....the fans here eat their own. I swear I think some people on here would complain if the ice in their tea was too cold.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. In fact, this kind of behavior seems to be a prevalent trait of society as a whole; attention span of two minutes, patience for the short run. Sort of like the markets, eh??

Nobody is that bad of a recruiter!

We'll find out.

Hes not doing much to prove otherwise recruiting local guys not even ranked among the top 100 at their own position. Nobody is going to wait to see if he can develop players if the level of players hes bringing in is not atleast competitive with our rivals.

I will. And if he can go 12-0 at Cinci, then I'm ready to give him a chance before I start posting negative things about his hair. I can be mean that way. (I'm so badass).

need some good news to close the recruting season... getting shut out on NSD would just be depressing!

At this point who is the bigger need? Henderson/James or Ferguson?

we may or may not lose any more commits, we may or may not gain some more recruits. that we will find out in just over a week. however, this team is filled with alot of talent and should win now. thus, the coming years we will get top talent. but with top talent, you may also get laziness, prima donas, etc. the last 3-5 yrs., one of the biggest problems with this team was HEART. they lacked what it took in the 4th quarter to either finish a game off or make that one final stop to keep the win. these kids will learn to put their own egos aside and will work as a complete TEAM. we will get back to beating up the likes of navy, pitt, stanford, and start holding our own with/ and beating the likes of usc, osu and the other elite teams.

17 "commits" currently. Hopefully, the Irish can still land James, Spond and Ferguson.

i agree, but i don't think this past season's problem were egos. they played with heart, but i think they lacked preparation and fitness. two things i'm fairly confident that bk will address.

I personally negatively rep ChamPen every time he posts something stupid. He just doesnt know what the hell he is talking about. I recommend other people do the same. I generally do it when i just flat out disagree with what someone else has posted.

He changes his damn name after every idiotic post he makes. It looks like he himself isnt proud of his posts. Originally ChamPen, then CincywasOverrated, now AnthonyBarrSaysHi.

Well.. ND might not have a great recruiting class, but Kelly beat teams ND lost to the past couple of years.. and his star talent level of the players was significantly lower than NDs... So hopefully Kelly will continue to develop his players.

I believe in Kelly. He has a plan.

How do you "negatively rep" someone, because when I find out I am targeting the people who take message boards to seriously.:joke:

I think people get far too caught up in getting 25 guys every recruiting cycle. This isn't Alabama or SC. We don't have the attrition rates of those types of schools. 20ish guys per class should really be the target.

If we stray too far from that, then we are going to start having uneven talent spreads similar to what we saw in 2007.

If BK is a winner, the kids will come.

You seemed to know how to do it on 1/9/2010 when you "negatively repped" me.

Haha yes i try to with him. That is one thing about repping though, it is hard to rep someone multiple times if they post alot. Alot of guys i cant give positive reps to until i rep other people. Like neutered, the dude effing cracks me up. All that being said, i laughed when i noticed corry was in the red.

Anyways, back on subject, its going to be a very big weekend for ND. Got 4 big recruits coming in, with two verbals coming as well. Link below. Come oooooooooonnnnnnnnn Ioane!

He also negatively reps you for ... "Dont negatively sell the university online please."

If that's the case, I guess the entire board should get Neg Reps at one point or another. Or we should all conform to a groupthink mentality...
