I have already braced myself for a disappointing recruiting class. Wouldnt be surprised to see 1 or two more decommit. Despite this, I believe that although this class may be weaker (although still stronger than any Cinci class) he is making the right steps towards success. Next year will be rebuilding year, but i still see a winning record. As for down the road, I do believe we will return to national prominence, although this is going to be a tough offseason.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Ask Jamie: How well will Kelly recruit?

I am a huge Irish fan and was wondering if Brian Kelly is going to make an immediate impact and end recruiting strong for Notre Dame this year? Any big names left that he might be able to get?

</TD></TR><TR><TD align=middle></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- End Image-->It's really hard to get a read on whether Kelly will kill it in recruiting or not. I don't expect the wheels to fall off the Fighting Irish recruiting machine, but I don't see him hitting a grand slam either - at least not right away. I think Notre Dame recruiting will fall somewhere in the middle and fans should be pretty happy on National Signing Day considering there's another coaching transition in South Bend.
So far, things have been pretty positive. While Kelly may not be that blockbuster big name many Irish fans were hoping for, what he did at Cincinnati was pretty darn impressive. Most prospects know this and are intrigued by Kelly. Many say they want to hear what he says, how he says it and what he plans to do in South Bend. Kelly has talked with most of the committed prospects. It looks as if these players are sticking, at least at this point. That's certainly a very good sign, especially in today's recruiting. But Kelly hasn't talked to many players yet who are on the fence. The Irish still have a chance to land some big-time players like offensive linemen Seantrel Henderson and Matt James, athlete Anthony Barr, defensive backs Sean Parker and Dietrich Riley and defensive tackle Bruce Gaston Jr., just to name a few. First, Kelly needs to evaluate what's already on campus and put together a coaching staff. Once he does, we all should have a better idea of the direction of the program (schemes, etc.) and just how well they will finish off this recruiting class.

I understand that we'd loose a few but I think this might be turning into a landslide on us, I hope Kelly makes recruiting a priority and gets a handle on this. These are after all HS kids and they tend to play follow the leader.

Rudolph and the McCarthy brothers are the only ones who OSU offered. Actually this is a trend that is apparent throughout the tenure of Jim Tressel. The Ohio players that OSU offer ultimately end up Buckeyes. Look at the top ten players in the state from 05-09. Rivals.com Prospect Rankings Six during that time period in the top ten offered by OSU have not picked OSU. Ironically Boren is now in Columbus. While 5* accolades might be absent, quality talent is not. Look at the Ohio State two deep over the same time period. 15 in 09, 16 in 08, 17 in 07, 18 in 06, 13 in 05 players from Ohio. FWIW Ohio State is playing in their 8th BCS game, most all time.

The point I was trying to make is that Ohio State has been the best team in the midwest since Tressel's arrival. Recruiting the home grown talent has defined Tressel's teams. I think Notre Dame can do better and Kelly could provide that extra push.

That wasn't the point that you stressed and I responded to. You wrote:
The bottom line is Kelly needs to get back the territory that Willingham lost and what Weis couldn't recover. Cincy and Cleveland specifcally.

That's got nothing to do with OSU being the best team in the midwest since Tressel's arrival. And more so Willingham didn't lose the territory. I listed some of notable ND players from Ohio over the decades but noted Ohio was never "ND's Territory" even during the Cerrato years.

Landslide?

Martin was vacillating since late Spring early Summer. Did you miss all that?

I found Hurd to be a surprise commit and considered him a shaky verbal. I would not have been surprised if had chosen to stay in Texas if ND was going to a BCS game and Weis was offered another 10 year extension.

Shembo and Moore want to look at some other schools. I'd rather they chose not to come now and sign on and drop out after a year or so.

This class has picked up a couple of decommits from other schools and lost like number to other schools. Do we need to list the likes of Trattou, Hunter, et al to refresh your memory that that happens every year in recruiting?

Right now most of the reminder have re-affirmed their commitments. No landslide. More like a couple of insecure bolders rolled on their own.

I have to agree. I, for one, am pretty surprised that so many have affirmed that they are solid. I think that speaks to BK's reputation and the way Charlie's staff sold the school as much as their regime.

If we end up with a top 20 class in a transition year, I'd have a hard time being upset.

Agree...and there was a pretty big bump in recruiting when Kelly took over for Dantonio.

Yeah and once he and his staff get settled at ND I woul suspect that he will be able to carry over the recruiting trend that CW and his crew got established. If one does get upset or dejected if one of the current recruits decommits, think back to the days when ND had Ty leading the recruitment. Comparing to Ty's recruiting abilities, nothing could be that bad again .... even if ND loses 1/3 of the current commits!

Your right I guess I'm just a little nervous/excited about what's to come.

Jimbo just inked a 5 year K for $1.8 million a year... he was running that program anyway... Bobby was a figurehead... at $1.8 they were not worried about losing him... Fla. St. will be in the same boat for the next 5 years.

Even with Martin going to Cal - they are 7 or 8 spots behind us in recruiting rankings.... Stanford is 10 spots back... they have 4 4*s and a butt load of 3*s and many 2*s. If Harbaugh is so great... he's doing it developing talent.
If BK can pull in 2 or more 4's and a 5*... this will stay a great class without defections.
We're still in play on a couple of 5*s and maybe 3-4 4*s...

I have no doubt that BK can and will recruit the offensive side of the ball very well. CW did this and his offense looked great at times this last year, but alas, defense wins championships, and I just don't see us as getting the top talent that is going to be needed to get us to elite status on the defensive side of the ball.

So we have a new commit, great, a diamond in the rough so to speak. The last time I heard a coach brag about "diamonds in the rough' was Tyrone Willingham and look where that got us. And sorry, we don't need another McCarthy, we need a Taylor Mays, and as I've said before, seeing is believing. Until I see it on the field, then I won't beleive or have faith.

Once again some people need to just wait and let Brian Kelly do what he does best.
He is a proven winner and he will win with the players He recruits let him do that before making judgement calls without knowledge.

So what is everyones best guess as to how ND will finish off the recruiting season? I would assume we are still going to try and land six recruits to finish off the class. I am going to say Matt James, Anthony Barr, Bruce Gaston, Corey Cooper, Dietrich Riley, and Kyle Prater coming on as the surprise committ. Brian Kelly still has a great chance to finish strong.

Now that JC and GT have declared for the draft we can two more guys. I also believe they'll give Wenger, Stewart, and Walls another year. We can fit 27 in this class. I hope we get at least 25 this year.

Not worth a damn, but hey, we picked up Austin Collinsworth, he's got potential All-American written all over him. I say we're done.

Here's a kid recommended by Lemming... an ex-teamate of Te'o...

"Back to Hawaii?

CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming says it may be worth Kelly's while.

A former high school teammate of Irish freshman linebacker Manti Te'o is an uncovered gem, according to Lemming. And he's not the only one who thinks so.

Jeremy Ioane is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior linebacker at the Punahou School in Honolulu but projects as a college strong safety and has drawn comparisons to Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu.

“He even used to look like Troy Polamalu, but he cut his hair this year,” said Brian Te'o, Manti's father and an assistant coach at Punahou. “He's quick and complemented Manti very well. I think he would be ready to play at Notre Dame or any collegiate program.”

So far, only Boise State, Hawaii, Washington and Utah have gotten involved with Ioane."

Link: South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Few holdovers on Kelly's staff

only link I can find on the kid:

Interesting I also noticed a new name on the recruiting list Scout has for ND. They have Danny Spond, 3 star Scout and 4 star Rivals athlete (I looked at 3 places and he was shown as QB, MLB, and S) Not sure if he is a new target or not, but he was not on the list Friday.

Various places I have seen concerns and some complaints about recruiting already (on the internet in general). However my thoughts are this:

#1 Give Kelly a year with our current guys and the new recruits before anyone says ANYTHING about the team in general

#2 Once the coaches are announced things will settle a lot

#3 If we keep the current 18 commits and can add Gaston, Barr, Cooper, James, and a recruit or two we may not know yet then there is no need to whine about anything at all.
