Needs by Position:
QB - 1 stud. With the fact Crist has 3 years of eligibility and we took 3 in 2010, we can afford to be very picky and take ONE great player.

RB - 1 stud. We lose both AA and Hughes after this year, but we will have Robertson, Jonas and Cierre returning. Plus, Theo could always end up back at RB if we needed.

WR - 3, but one must be instant impact guy. We lose Kamara and Floyd after this season. Both these guys have size, so I would like to see atleast one playmaker with size who could be a freshman impact.

TE - 1. We lose Rudolph to the NFL after this year. Ragone and Tyler E will likely split duties next season. We need a solid player who will get a year to mature. BEN KOYACK fills the position need. COMPLETED

OL - 3 minimum, maybe 4. We will lose both Stewart and Wenger after this year. We return good depth, but tackle is going to be the priority with 2 a must. Then need for tackle became critical with the passing of Matt James. HANRATTY, HEGARTY and PRESTWOOD. This gives us two tackles and a guard. Likely one more.

DL - 2-3, one must be a dominant DE. We have several players possible to replace Ian Williams at NT. At DE, we have both starters back in 2011, but need a stud to start grooming to replace Ethan Johnson. CARRICO and SPRINGMAN. Now we hold out for one freaky good athlete here,.

OLB - 2. We lose both Kerry Neal and Brian Smith after this season, but Filer and Fleming will be here for 2011. We need 2 very solid players that can be ready to contribute early. JARRET GRACE is a good start. Now we need to wait out a freaky talent.

ILB - 2. This is a position of strength for a couple years if Teo sticks around. Teo and McDonald will man the middle for the next two seasons with Calabrese ready to step in. Add in Prince S and Paskorz for great depth. We can afford to be picky here and get another Teo like player.

Safety - 2 MUST. We likely have Harrison for two more years as he has a 5th year available. McCarthy, Slaughter and Motta all have 2-3 years left, but we need a playmaker here for the future. MATHIAS FARLEY could be either CB or S. We need to add several more athletes.

CB - 2, one must be a lockdown. We lose Walls after this season. Gray could be back for a 5th, but no guarantee. We must add a set and forget him kind of player to replace Walls.

So, with all this said. Here is the final numbers for offense and defense.

Offense - 9 minimum. Area needing 5star stud. WR is a must. Need a Floyd like player.
Defense - 10 minimum. Area needing 5star stud. CB with lockdown skills or DE that can maul the QB.

I love the list, does a great job of summing up ND's future needs.

However, I'm going to try and be optimistic and say that Floyd and Rudy will be around for two more years... <crosses fingers>

true is depriest a osu lean?

Yeah, from what I read he seems to be leaning to OSU. But Kelly could swoop in and steal him.

Plus Matt James (RIP) was considered a steal from OSU.

Its the offseason, I don't have much to do other than hope.. lol

You would think so, but it is nowhere near a lock. I think the thing that would really help us with this kid is winning right away. I expect this one to be a fairly long recruiting process, but it is hard to tell.

Obviously winning would help with everybody... .

Haha! Jonesman... I read your post and was like, "I know that I have seen this post somewhere. Did he steal it?" I searched all of the other forums, and finally I found it - you are on DD as well.

I am only enrolled in IE, but I do check the other sites as well.

So.. anyways... sorry for almost suspecting you of plagiarizing yourself... haha

Isn't Ragone gone after this year too? If that is the case then maybe we get another good TE

Nope. Almost sure to get a medical redshirt for 2008.

Ya, he should get another year.

And we might not need another TE, because bringing in Koyack is huge.

Even without Rudy and Ragone, ND would still have Eifert and Alex Welch.

So Eifert, Welch, and Koyack could potentially get the job done... That way ND could use schollies on other positions.

I agree that we need two really good safeties and two good corners in this class. I love what we are doing so for though. I can't wait for September!

Needs by Position:
QB - 1
RB - 1
WR - 3
TE - 1
OL - 3-4
DL - 2-3
OLB - 2
ILB - 2
S- 2
CB - 2

You need to adjust your numbers to reflect a Kicker as we've already got one in this class. I didn't see Kicker as a need this year but Kelly obviously did. That will reduce a number at some other position. I'd chop an ILB as first, WR second, then DB. There are players on the timteam now that will be moved to other position and he's keying on flexible prospects that can fit team needs.

I heard Jarrett Grace say that Kelly told him they would only take 3 LBs in this class.

This will only increase your pain in December/January......

I don't think his momma will let him leave early. If he gets his degree early, that might change things. But from stories about his recruitment, I believe he stays.

QB - 1 stud. AGREED.

RB - 1 stud. AGREED.

WR - I think 2 really good WRs would be fine. Walker, Goodman, Evans, Riddick, Toma, Jackson, Jones, Smith, __________, _________.

TE - COMPLETED. AGREED

OL - The more elite O-linemen the better.

DL - The more elite dlineman the better- need a rushing DE. We should not take a NT unless a true stud is available due to the log jam we have right now.

OLB - 2. I see Grace as an inside linebacker as he is already 6'3" 235 going into his senior year. I think we get one plus a DE tweener that could develop.

ILB - 1. Lots of bodies, so few scholarships. Grace may be all we can take this year. (3 total linebackers.)

Safety - 2 MUST. AGREE.

CB - 2. AGREE.

I say Floyd sticks around for another year but Rudy heads out.

I'm in the minority but I think it makes more sense for Rudolph to stay another year. He's a pass catching machine but that's not all it takes to play in the NFL. His blocking was atrocious as a freshman. It was much better last year but it wasn't good. Then he got hurt. Just how much lifting has he been doing since his shoulder separation and surgery?

He'll lose more strength development over the next few months. Then another 12 months he's supposed to be beating up 30 year old All-Pro DEs than run faster than anybody he's lined up against and have more size and strength than's he ever seen. Then there's the superior technique they have developed playing as pros.

As a WR Floyd like Tate can get away with less college development as WRs don't have to block bull rushing 300 pounders.

Honestly, Rudolph will go first round next year. Eerybteam is lookin or that te to help spread the field. He's tall with good hands and speed. A te that missed the entire season got drafted. A team like kc will be lookingto surround thier qb with better talent and a tall te with great hands.

His mom won't matter. I'm a Butler fan and this is how peopple justified Gordon Hayward staying. That didn't happen. If you have a first round-projected junior, he's gone until he says otherwise.

Do we have room for 19 prospects? I have seen 16-17 as a reasonable number.

We are at 83 scholarship players. 20 will graduate with 8 eligible for 5th years. Let's say 6 will be granted 5th years (Ragone, Dever, Romine, Paskorz, H.Smith, and Gray), leaving 69. That's 16 as a firm number.

Only if Floyd and Rudolph leave early do we reach 18. Otherwise, attrition and taking less than six fifth years will allow us to take more and leave us at 85.

Guys,
Thanks for all the commentary. I just want to suggest that all those who are in some odd, dillusional or misguided belief that Floyd and Rudulph are not going to the NFL after this season, WAKE UP!!!!! These two are both absolute first round diamonds.

Just yesterday, I watched both talking heads on ESPN rave about these guys. Both guys will be top 3 at their respective position. In fact, I do not see another TE in the country with Rudolph's skills. Floyd has had issues with injuries and cannot afford to risk more injuries by returning as a senior.

Trust me, I am an obsolute ND fanatic and would die to have them both back, but it is NOT going to happen. If they were my kids, I would support them leaving to the NFL. Both are smart enough to come back to get their degree.

I will enjoy them this year and wish them the best in the NFL. They play with passion for ND and have earned my respect.

The huge BUT to all this is injury. If one of them ends up injured early and needs to re-prove their health, they might return. This is a huge IF and I do not wish this in any way.

Go IRISH and good luck Mike and Kyle!!
