Bye Week Random Thoughts:
1.) Charlie Weis - He is not perfect by any stretch, but if not him then who is the answer. I find it funny how many of those HOT coaches tend to be a flash in the pan and then fizzle. Look at Tedford at Cal, Schianno at Rutgers or Holtz at ECU. Further, some coaches do well when they are the hunter, not the hunted. Trust me, at ND you are every opponents circle game of the year. We get the best shot from every single opponent. For instance, Kelly is doing great job at UC, but how would he handle a true weekly pressure cooker?

2.) ND Offense - When Floyd is healthy, is there a more potent trio than Floyd, Tate and Rudolph in college football? Think not. How nice is it to be able to run when the defense knows we will be running. ND is forming a USC like stable in the backfield.

3.) Injury Bug - This has been the most injury riddled season I can remember. Look at the big names. Bradford/OK, Tebow/UF, Floyd/ND, Barkley/USC, Taylor/USC, Clausen/ND.

4.) Defense - It cracks me up how the Tenuta love has become hatred. Truth is we are a youthful defense, especially in the front seven. I took the time this week to look at the defenses most of us would agree are the elite in college football, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, OSU, USC, Iowa. These are the ones that are most feared. Here is a common FACT among all of them. They start a minimum of 8 upper classmen. In two cases, they start 11 upper classmen. At ND we start 6 upper classmen.

5.) Depth/Competition - We are finally at a point that we have players fearful for their jobs in many positions. This will only get better as time goes on. This is what creates a sustainable program and prevents cycles. This is how USC reloads, not rebuilds.

6.) Schedules - ND got bashed in the preseason because our schedule looked so soft. Well, I believe when we finish the season and look back, it looks pretty solid. UM is definitely better than most thought. UW has already beaten USC. Stanford is playing solid. BC is winning more than expected. Pitt is solid. MSU will end up winning 7-8 games. Further, look at some other schedules of those in the Top 25 and you will laugh. PSU has played the ultimate patsies.

7.) NFL Draft - You may ask, what is he talking about the Draft for here? Well, with great players, comes painful losses after the Junior season. I fully expect Rudolph and Floyd to leave after next season. They will both be 1st round picks and make a ton of $$. If I were their parents, I would direct them to the NFL. They will still get their degrees, but they cannot afford to pass up the $$. We may even loss Jimmy after this season. If so, I wish him well. I believe these kids will make the decision that is best for them and their families.

8.) College Football - Is there a better sport on the planet?? NO WAY!!!!

7) I do agree that Rudolph may leave, as for Golden, he is an amazing Baseball player, i think we may see him test the waters in baseball as well, got to meet him when he played in my town. Jimmy I think should stay because he just has to many questions if he goes to the draft he will be a sub 4th round pick.

Not true man. Kiper's all over him, and Chris Mortensen said that GMs are telling him that Locker and Jimmy will be the top 2 QBs taken next year if they were to come out. Things can change of course with some bag games and a bad pro day, but the possibility of leaving early is becoming stronger and stronger with every 300-400 yard game. The kid can make every single throw, has major league zip on his ball, has shown toughness and grit his entire career, is a leader, and does the 2 minute drill to perfection. What's not to love?

While your points are true, at the washington game he always had the tendecy to follow one target and miss wide open targets. But yes I do wish him well I just think its to risky for Jimmy to jump yet.

The fact he's leaving us after this season is, in fact, whats not to love. I hope Crist invites the fellas over to his home for the summer to create some chemistry. The offensive kind, not the queer type- which is offensive I suppose.:makeout:

Just thought I'd let you guys know, on CBSsportsline.com, they have Jimmy Clausen #1 in their heisman hopefuls. 3 of the 5 guys voted him number one, 1 guy voted him number two, and some other guy who doesnt look like he knows his ass from his elbow voted him number four. Heres the link.

I think my lil dog becomes a big dog at ND next year, but if the time and situation is right, I wish him the best. Glad he chose ND.

I'll tell you one thing he gets no credit for and thats the respect and love the players show him, those pictures and other pictures from the past are not faked, they like this man and they are busting their @$$*$ for him. They grew up as men and players under him-pretty nice thing. He has his faults but you dont get that reaction from players unless they like and respect you.

Buddy, that was probably his worst (full) game of the year, and he only missed 8 friggin passes!!! How is that always having a tendency to miss wide open targets? He completed 74% of his passes, threw for a career high 422 yards, and had a QB rating of 203.38! This is what kills me about our fans sometimes. Our players can have career games, and fans will still harp on the plays they didn't do perfectly. These fans must have never played sports before, because no one is perfect when they play (except for maybe Christian Laettner for vs Kentucky LOL). Jimmy missed some guys, but really, many of those incompletions were throw-aways. I honestly don't see how anyone can criticize a guy playing on a bad toe that limits his ability to throw accurately, after the numbers that he put up, and the comebacks that he has led the team on the past 3 weeks, all while injured. I'm not trying to bust your balls bro, but seriously, what else do you want the kid to do to prove he's the best QB in the nation?

Yes, going pro early is risky, for everyone who does it. You know what is even more risky? Playing college football your final year and leaving millions and millions of dollars on the table, despite the very real possibility that you'd be among the top 2-3 QBs taken in the draft. I loved college and I'd probably stay all 4 years, but I'll NEVER blame a kid for leaving when there is guaranteed money on the table, especially with the lockout looming and the rookie salary cap coming up. Football is a violent, violent game, and Jimmy is risking much more by staying in college than he is leaving for the pros (assuming he's still a guaranteed first round pick)...

That is the one thing that I am worried about. If there was no rookie salary cap coming, I would not be concerned about him leaving, but that could cost him millions and millions of dollars.

While your points are true, at the washington game he always had the tendecy to follow one target and miss wide open targets. ...

I thought I heard the announcers comment about Clausen running through his receivers and his awareness of where they were during the play (checking back). I know I read a couple of articles on Sunday pointing out that Jimmy uses all his receivers and all of the field. The "Hesiman" articles on Monday were along the same lines.

I didn't hear or read any comments about a tendency to follow one target. In fact I don't recall that comment since this season began.

The Offiical Stats don't bear that out either.

Receiving No. Yds TD Long
----------------------------------------
Tate, Golden 9 244 1 77
Rudolph, Kyle 4 53 1 30
Evans, Shaquelle 4 34 0 15
Allen, Armando 3 20 0 13
Parris, Robby 2 46 0 26
Hughes, Robert 1 25 0 25
Totals... 23 422 2 77

Now add to that, the 8 incompletions from the Official Stats at und.com:
Tate 1
Rudolph 3
Parris 1
Ragone 1
Throwaways/QBH 2

Pass Attempts By Position:
WRs 17
TE 8
RBs 4

Did you come to this conclusion because Tate had 10 of the 31 passes thrown his way?

Wouldn't you look for Tate as he is one of the leading receivers in the nation, has the ability to break a simple out pattern or look in into a big gainer?

I recall at least one replay showing Tate waving his arms twice in two different locations on the same play. Jimmy hit him the second time - on the check back. Could he do that if locked onto a receiver?

I am really going to let loose with the biggest gripe I have about Clausen and the reason I think he is not the best QB in the nation. He leaves his damn mouthpiece up in his helmet between plays! Every single play I am worried he is going to forget it up there. Sure enough, on Saturday, one camera shot was in front of him right before the snap and, lo and behold, he forgot to put his mouth piece in. What happened? He overthrew Parris in the back of the endzone.

So at least one of his whopping 8 incompletions can be attributed to him forgetting his mouthpiece in his helmet. Jimmy needs to be more diligent about putting his mouthpiece in. That's what is keeping him from being the best QB in college football.

Other than that, he is awesome. Absolute stud.

Please note sarcasm. I just get tired of hearing people's continuous gripes sometimes. The mouthpiece thing does kind of bug me a little, though.

That pass was perfect and in theonly place where the defender couldn't get it and hiw WR could. Hit Parris right in the puss!

Agree on the mouth peice issue though. It stresses me out.

I think the percentages are on our side. Most of our players stay in school. who wants to leave ND? This is going to be the best time in their lives money or not. It doesn't look like the Clausen's need money and they can all take out some insurance policies if they really need to like pretty boy Matt Leinart did. The only player I don't see satying until he is a senior might be Floyd. He is the proto-type pro WR. If he had stayed on track he would be ranked higher than GT as a pro prospect IMO.

Not the one where it hit Parris in the face, the one where Parris slipped in the back right corner of the end zone. Don't remember exactly what part of the game, but Parris slipped in the very back corner. That was the one that he was missing his mouth piece.

I'm more concerned that he's going to catch Swine Flu from licking his fingers before every snap after handling a filthy pigskin. I don't think wiping the ball with Purell between plays is current protocol.

Here are the things I've noticed this year that make me smile about, and for Clausen (amidst the grimaces over defensive lapses and near myocardial infarctions in closing minutes):

1 – He's no longer a juvenile, pompous, limo-driven putz. Reality left a mark and toughened him.
2 – He's getting better protection from the Oline.
2(a) He now has time to survey the field and find the best receiver on any given play.
2(b) Much less need for him to simply "lock on" to the primary receiver specified in the play called.
2(c) Willingness and ability to scramble and laser a pass to a scrambling second or third receiver.
3 – He and Charlie are both much more confident in his choices and abilities.
3(a) Plays called have expanded from simple survival to exciting expectation.
3(b) Mr. Clausen has shown he's equal to the task Coach Weis has given him. In spades.

The receiving corps, even without Floyd, with JC pulling the trigger is potent. Pick your poison.

The running game is looking good. Personnel and schemes have it a fully loaded Colt revolver rather than a single shot Derringer. Will Hughes be our next .45 Magnum back?

All I want for St. Ignatius of Antioch's Feast Day is a well conceived and coached defensive scheme with well chosen, talented and spirited players. Irish Wolfhounds willing and able to shove a poodle up Traveler's ass and reveal the eunuchs beneath those chichi leather studded skirts.

Actually, I think with his hands so close to the center's backside, I'm thinking hepatitis is a much more worrisome diesease possibility with licking his fingers. There are a myriad of other diseases that can be transmitted through fecal-oral contact as well. He could actually just mount some sort of Purell dispenser on the back of Olsen. Perferably something motion activated so he doesn't actually have to touch anything.
